On the road again By Helen Tatchell

The COVID-19 restrictions and regulations have

struck many businesses in Moorabool and one travel
agent has had to shut the doors, but they are still taking
a journey, locally.
Cartier World Travel in Ballan worked endless hours to
ensure their clients got home safely and swiftly when
the pandemic first occurred, then the doors closed. The
phones stopped ringing and the income ceased.
Principal owner Dave Nickels has now picked himself
up, dusted himself off and started to help others, for no
financial reward.
He has started a transport assistance service within
Ballan and district for absolutely free.
“I have even discovered places I did not know existed;
last week I did an urgent medication drop off at a place
called Bunding,” he said.
The free service operates between 10am and midday
every weekday and targets those in self isolation or
simply just isolated within the surrounds of the rural
community.
“We are picking up groceries, prescriptions and even
taking people to the bank, post office or a medical
appointment.”
Mr Nickels said the idea came to him after they brought
back Moorabool shire clients from a cruise.
“They had to go into mandatory 14-day isolation but
had no access to anything so they rang us to see if we
could help.
“We have our staff coming in one day a week, so we all
decided to take turns driving the car and dropping off
the medication or groceries,” he said.
After the Moorabool News ran a community service
announcement for Cartier’s transport assistance in their
publication and on their facebook page, it suddenly got
busier.
“It is growing every day,” he said.
“Mostly our pick-ups and drop offs are for the chemist
and taking people to the doctors, with some groceries
being delivered.”
Mr Nickels said it is really a morale builder for the
community.
“It is difficult to say how long we will be doing this,
but at the end I just want to make sure my staff are still

here.”
The service is free to residents living in the Ballan,
Mt Egerton, Lal Lal, Myrniong, Yendon, Pentlands,
Gordon, Greendale and Blackwood communities.
His business may have closed however, Dave Nickels (Cartier World Travel Ballan) is busier than every delivering and picking up prescriptions To book call 1800 048 604 Monday to Friday between

MOORABOOL SHIRE COUNCIL

CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19)
UPDATE
14 APRIL 2020
MAYOR’S MESSAGE
It has now been a few weeks since strict restrictions were introduced by the State Government and I want to congratulate the Moorabool
community on adhering and adapting to the rules, even though I know it can be challenging.
This week, we want to remind our residents that even though we are bunkering down in our homes, there is help and advice available for those
who need it. The Federal Government has set up several telephone and online services. Details are below.
Last week, we focussed information in this ad on our elderly and vulnerable population and I hope those people in our community continue to
get the help and support they need during this time. This week we want to highlight information for families with young children.
In addition, we have information on regular flu vaccinations. If you haven’t received a flu vaccination yet this year, please take note of the day and
time our Environmental Health team have put aside for the flu vaccination.
The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) has said this year, it’s more important than ever to get immunised against
influenza as it will help reduce the strain on health resources dealing with COVID-19. Even though it won’t combat COVID-19, it will help reduce
the severity and spread of the flu, so I encourage all residents to vaccinate themselves and their families.
David Edwards,
Mayor

ADVICE AND CARE OVER THE PHONE

Did you know there is a Victorian Coronavirus hotline? It runs 24 hours a day seven days a week, and can provide information about COVID-19: 1800 675 398.
Djerriwarrh Health Services is transitioning their medical, allied health and nursing services to Telehealth, which is a consultation via telephone or video service to ensure the
protection of our patients and staff at this challenging time. For any pre-existing appointments, patients are being notified by a phone call from the health service of this change, and
how it works. New appointments are currently available via Telehealth, depending on the service. All new appointments will be triaged and notified of availability.
For more information about telehealth, visit https://www.health.gov.au/resources/publications/covid-19-national-health-plan-primary-care-package-mbs-telehealth-

FLU VACCINATIONS
Council is running a family-based flu vaccination clinic at the Darley Council offices, 182 Halletts Way, this Saturday April 18. Vaccinations are available for those under 10 and their
immediate family or household unit. Vaccinations are free for those under 5 and $15 per person for those over 5. This will allow families to vaccinate in one trip instead of having
to leave the home several times for vaccinations. Council is expecting high demand, and if numbers exceed capacity, further sessions may be made available. Bookings are essential.
For details on times and how to book, go to our website: www.moorabool.vic.gov.au or our Moorabool Shire Council Facebook page.

Win dedicated to family

The Bacchus Marsh Newsagency are once again
proving that “dreams can come true” with the
second big winner in six months claiming a first
prize at their outlet.
An anonymous Bacchus Marsh man purchased
the winning ticket from the local newsagency,
which was one of the seven division one winning
entries nationally in the Saturday April 4 draw.
Owner of the Bacchus Marsh Newsagency, Peter
Drever, said the division one win was one for the
entire community.
“[The win] will lift the spirits in the township
which has been hit hard by the current situation,”
Mr Drever said.
“Our customers are always so happy to share
the news of a division one win. It cements in their
mind that dreams do come true at our outlet,”
Mr Drever said. “This is the second division one
winning entry we’ve sold in less than six months,”
“We hope it brings hope to all of our lottery
players that they could be just one ticket away
from a life-changing win,” Mr Drever said.
The local man, and winner of $623,016.67, said
he had been using the same numbers for “about
18-years,” and that the win ultimately relates back
to luck.
“I have two tickets, one is made up of my entire
family’s birthdates, and then I have one which is
full of numbers chosen at random,
“It just goes to show that you need the right
numbers – it really is just the luck of the draw,”
the man said.
As well as winning the division one prize, he also
won division three 12 times and division four 15
times, taking his total winnings up to $623,776.92.
When asked what he was going to do with the
winnings, he explained that he “couldn’t wait to
buy a new home for his loved ones to enjoy.”
“We have always rented. This win will allow us
to finally stop renting and get a house of our own.
It will be for me and my family,” the man said. Peter Drever’s Bacchus Marsh Authorised Newsagency has sold a Division 1 first prize to a Bacchus Marsh man. Photo - submitted

Important COVID-19 Update from your local paper

Locals Can Help Locals
To Our Valued Readers,
These are challenging times for our local community, as they are for all local communities around the world. Many of us are anxious, and unsure about many things, but one thing
we know for certain is that we need to work together as a community to overcome the challenges this global pandemic has created.
I take this opportunity as a locally owned and operated small business in Moorabool, to thank our advertisers for their support in the past, now and in the future.
Without advertisers spending locally – there would be no newspaper.
Without you the resident spending locally – there would be no businesses.
“Lives Matter; and so do Livelihoods – We are ALL in this together”
STAY INFORMED
For the last 15 odd years as the Moorabool News and since 1872 as the Ballan News, this publication has been the trusted source of local news, and we take our responsibility to
inform the local community very seriously. For the latest government advice regarding COVID-19, see www.health.gov.au, and please beware that ‘news’ on social media is not
regulated and many false and dangerous theories are being shared online.
ISOLATE AND AVOID INFECTION
The Coronavirus is first and foremost a health crisis and keeping our community safe and healthy, is the number one priority. Please follow the government protocols and do all
you can to avoid infection.
PLEASE BUY LOCAL
This health crisis has caused an economic crisis, and we need to do all we can as a community to save local jobs, and livelihoods in the long term. The best thing we can do (in
addition to staying well) is buying from local businesses whenever, and wherever possible. Buying locally has an amazingly positive multiplier effect on the local community
because your money keeps being reinvested by other local businesses and employees. This is critical to keeping locals in jobs.
A NOTE TO OUR ADVERTISERS
We understand these are very tough times for business – as we are also the feeling the impact. We are ready to assist you to change your advertising copy to keep the local
community updated about any changes to your business operation hours, safety protocols, new service delivery models, messages of thanks/ support or other important news.
We are developing attractive special offers for our loyal advertisers to assist through these tough times, and we look forward to working together to see this through. Our
readership will continue to be important, as people seek trusted news in a crisis.
THANKS TO OUR READERS & ADVERTISERS
We can’t thank you enough for your loyal support over that past 15 & 148-years, and we look forward to keeping you informed in the decades to come. Our Moorabool News
team are doing an outstanding job, in very tough conditions, and by picking up a paper or reading online, and advertising with us, you are helping to ensure we keep everyone
updated and informed. Thank you.
Finally, they say character is revealed in a crisis, and the local Moorabool community is once again rallying and showing great strength and resilience.
Kind regards,

ABOUT OUR CATALOGUES

We understand our customers use the FoodWorks catalogues to plan a weekly shop.
With the unprecedented demand for products, and shortage of supply, we have seen
customers being disappointed when an advertised line is not available in their local store.
While we will continue to run our usual weekly promotions instore, we have decided to
stop all catalogues until we can be sure all advertised products will be available to you.
We are sincerely sorry for the inconvenience this may cause. Please, stay Local and
