General Performance
The overall performance of the candidates this year was encouraging. Improvements
were clearly shown. Candidates understood the requirements for all the tasks. Abilities
in expressing ideas confidently, giving justification and creative construction of
sentences were evident. A majority of the candidates showed abilities to fulfil the
requirements of the tasks acceptably. Nevertheless, some candidates were unable to
answer correctly due to poor command of the language.
High Achievers ( HA )
Average Achievers ( AA )
Low Achievers ( LA )
The candidates were unable to construct simple sentences correctly due to lack of
vocabulary and proficiency in the language. They could not write comprehensible
sentences. They resorted to direct lifting and direct translation due to mother tongue
interferences.
Candidate’s Performance
Question 1
Candidates in the HA group understood what is expected of them and could write
simple, compound and complex sentences using a wide range of vocabulary to
elaborate creative ideas.
Candidates were able to use correct expressions such as ‘sitting cross legged, ‘bending
over’ and ‘keeping an eye’ to describe the activities shown in the picture.
The sentences above are simple sentences describing what is seen in the picture only.
There was no usage of new expressions or vocabulary.
The phrase ‘racquets on a shelves’ was incorrect. The response should be ‘a racquet
on the wall’.
Attempts were made to construct sentences but the sentences constructed were
grammatically incorrect. Vocabulary was inaccurately used which therefore caused
distortion of ideas.
The sentence above has a grammatical error and the word ‘boys’ is irrelevant to the
stimulus.
Question 2 ( b )
The task of this question required candidates to make a choice and give relevant
reason(s) to support it. Candidates could make their choice and gave relevant
reason(s) through a variety of sentence structure.
The candidates in the HA group were able to fulfil the task for this question by
making their choice. They could give interesting reasons with good justification of
own ideas and expressions
Below is a sample showing the candidates’ ability to give reasons based on the
information given and ideas of their own.
Candidates are required to write a story based on the pictures with the help of the given
words.
