“THE CREATION OF
ADAM”
2.) “The Creation of Adam” was painted by Michelangelo on the ceiling of St. Sistine Chapel, Rome in 1511
to 1512 (Renaissance Period). The painting technique used in this artwork was fresco, a method of
painting water-based paint directly into the freshly plastered walls. He painted this artwork quickly
while lying because the paint easily dries up. The artwork depicts the creation of man as stated in the
Book of Genesis. On the left side, there is a man pointing his index finger as if he is trying to reach God
who is on the right side together with His angels. The elements of art applied in this masterpiece are
shape, texture, line and color. The red scarf on the background of God and His angels formed an oval
shape (organic shape). Organic lines, on the other hand, can be seen on the figure of man, earth, God’s
robe and red scarf. The body of man, red scarf and God’s robe also have simulated textures. When it
comes to color, the artwork used warm and cool colors. Warms colors (red, brown) were applied on
the man’s body and God’s background while cool colors (blue, green) were used on the man’s
background (earth) and the scarf of an angel. Aside from the elements of art, the principles of
organization are also present in this artwork: balance, emphasize, unity and line. The background of
each side, earth on the left and angels on the right, formed balance. Besides, balance can also be seen
on the horizontal line formed by God and man’s reaching of fingers. Emphasize is portrayed in this
artwork through contrast wherein Adam and God’s skin tone contrast with the background. The
artwork also make used of implied lines that can be seen on the eyes (gaze) and on the hands.
3.) The contemporary version of “The Creation of Adam” was digitalized unlike the original version which
applied the traditional styles and techniques in painting. The concept is still the same but the artist
made it more realistic by replacing all the symbols (earth, man, God, angels, scarf) with digital images
(ex. The artist used his face to replace God and man’s face, the clothing and bodies were edited, dolls
were used as a substitute for the angels, earth was replaced with grass). Besides, the colors seen in this
artwork are brighter than the previous one since digital images were used. It can also be noticed that
the contemporary version is pixelized unlike the original version which has a smooth texture. It’s
because the artist make used of photo installation to portray his creativity.
