Developmental Psychology – Assignment 2

Screening for Developmental Concerns – Aged 3 months – 24 months

For this assignment, your task is to first find a baby between the age of 2 months and 24 months,
and then administer the screening tool. While this screening tool is typically to be filled out by
parents, your task is to do it yourself – if there are any questions you are unable to answer, you may
ask the parent of the child. For the part where you are testing the child’s skills (social, emotional,
motor etc), please video record yourself and the child.

1) Find a baby between 2 months and 24 months – make sure you have the parents’ WRITTEN
consent for both the test and the video recording.
2) Depending on the age of the child, download the relevant questionnaire from:
https://steeplechasepedi.com/patient-corner/forms/ages-stages-questionnaires/ -- I
recommend you have a printed copy of this to work on.
3) If you have an 18 month or 24 month old, you also have to complete the M-CHAT tool.
4) When noting down the child’s skills, make sure you video record yourself and the child for at
least half the skills. For instance, if the question is “Does your baby pick up a small toy with
only one hand?” – record the baby having a toy in front of her/him and how the baby picks
up the toy.
5) YOU DO NOT HAVE TO FILL OUT THE “ADDITIONAL COMMENTS” SECTIONS – if you’d like to
for your own learning, you still can, but it is not required.
6) Score your test. Instructions are available on the test PDF you downloaded.
7) After you have finished scoring, write up a brief report outlining:
a. Any developmental milestones achieved (i.e is the baby on track as per their age).
b. Any developmental delays?
i. If so, what could be some potential causes?
c. Particular strengths or weaknesses (highest and lowest scores, eg highest in motor
skills, lowest in communication).
d. 3-5 suggestions on next steps for parents to help their child (either to improve on
specific skills, how to facilitate their learning/development, any specific activities
you’d recommend etc) --- this should be in accordance to their test results.
8) On LMS: Submit your written report + the LINK to the video recording you have of you and
the child.
9) In person: submit the complete, filled out sheet you printed from step 2.
