Description:
When it was first published in 1947, The Age of Anxiety--W. H. Audens last, longest, and most ambitious book-length poem--immediately struck
a powerful chord, capturing the imagination of the cultural moment that it diagnosed and named. Beginning as a conversation among four strangers
in a barroom on New Yorks Third Avenue, Audens analysis of Western culture during the Second World War won the Pulitzer Prize and inspired
a symphony by Leonard Bernstein as well as a ballet by Jerome Robbins. Yet reviews of the poem were sharply divided, and today, despite its
continuing fame, it is unjustly neglected by readers. This volume--the first annotated, critical edition of the poem--introduces this important work to
a new generation of readers by putting it in historical and biographical context and elucidating its difficulties. Alan Jacobss introduction and
thorough annotations help todays readers understand and appreciate the full richness of a poem that contains some of Audens most powerful and
beautiful verse, and that still deserves a central place in the canon of twentieth-century poetry.

Ive been a fan of literature and poetry since my teens, and somehow I always seemed to occasionally read about some great poem called The Age
of Anxiety by W.H. Auden--one of those works I always meant to get around reading, but never quite got to it... probably because of the scarce
availability of the thing! Early 2015 was the first time I even saw a copy of the work, and that was right here on amazon.com! Happily, I found a
relatively inexpensive, used old hardcover edition (with the same red & off-white cover seen here, except without the house picture accompanying
the Random House book-publishers logo). I was surprised to learn this is actually a book-length poem, or to be more exact, an eclogue featuring
four characters who take turns in speaking. More like drama, then, than a poem, and containing different sections, including a section perhaps as
well-known as the book itself, on The Seven Ages of Man. All that being said, this book made me an Auden fan after at least a decade of
ambivalence and indifference towards the man whose famous elegiac poems especially always seemed to turn up in poetry anthologies. THIS
ENTIRE BOOK / POEM / DRAMA CONSISTS OF ALLITERATIVE VERSE. (Example of alliterative verse: Peter Piper picked a peck of
pickled peppers...) This is astounding not only because it has been so rarely done, but even less commonly SUCCESSFULLY done, and yet
AUDEN DOES IT HERE SUCCESSFULLY FROM THE START TO THE FINISH OF THIS 138-PAGE WORK! This is a deep, truthful,
beautiful, insightful work. Stranger and more unusual (in a good way) than most of well-known literature and poetry, yet a classic amongst classics
all the same.SIDE NOTES:--This work was written after World War II came to an end, but takes place during the time of that War.--It was
written when Auden had moved (or was about to move) to New York from England, and became an American citizen. (Kinda the reverse of what
American-born--and first publisher, and friend, and fan of Audens--T. S. Eliot had done, in moving to England and becoming a citizen there.--T.S.
Eliot wrote when The Age of Anxiety was first published that it was Audens best work to date. This was asserted by the man who had signed
Auden up to the Faber And Faber publishing firm a decade and a half previous, and knew the mans skills and accomplishments!)--This work
inspired Leonard Bernsteins Second Symphony. Bernstein was yet another who was engrossed with this book.--This work was written around the
time of Audens own conversion to Christianity after a certain mystical experience. The once Marxist, leftist, openly homosexual Auden was now a
born-again Christian (influenced by Charles Williams, C.S. Lewis, Kiekkergaard, and some others), and began to live a humbler, more repentant,
conservative life... a fact that many of his fans and critics dislike, as they prefer his youthful stuff more than his mature works. They even say his
poetry suffered and was less good after this time. I for one, greatly prefer, almost exclusively, the mature/later works of a man like W.H. Auden to
his earlier, more liberal stuff. In this regard he is again like T.S. Eliot to me.
