The art of the Philippines refers to the works of art that have developed and

accumulated in the Philippines from the beginning of civilization in the country up to the
present era. The art of the Philippines can be divided into two distinct branches, namely,
traditional arts, and non-traditional arts.

Works of art, in general, are considered primary sources. However, in some

cases, paintings are considered secondary sources. If the painting was not created
under the time it reflects, then it is a secondary source.

Primary sources in art may take any forms, including:

 Artwork
 Autobiographies
 Interviews, diaries, speeches, letters
 Artifacts of the artist
 Photographs of artwork or artists

Brillante Mendoza is best known for tackling gritty, controversial issues in his
films. Mendoza makes sure his topics are always relevant to the current state of the
country, even if these topics happen to be the kind of truths no one really likes to
discuss. Mendoza use his style called “Neorealism” to shed light on pressing societal
issues in his homeland. He tackle social issues and even those that border on the
darker side of society, Mendoza hopes to encourage the Filipino audience to face reality
and deal with what’s really happening around them and in everything that they do. From
Brillante’s work we realize that you can still make films in a not expensive way, without
compromising your ideas, your perspective and your voice, most especially. Very
specific stories about your country and your people can reach the world. Mendoza’s
films ponder on the plight of marginalized people and communities. His method of
production is as sensitive as the stories he deals with. And he take the extra effort to
reach out to the Filipino audience.

Film production is among the skills promoted in the K-12 curriculum. Students
cannot become truly media literate—deeply critical consumers of mass media—until
they can experience making photographs, planning and organizing ideas through
storyboards, writing scripts and performing in front of a camera, designing a web page,
and reporting a news story. One way to promote film production as is to link it with the
ongoing curricular requirements of particular learning contexts. Video production then
becomes an instructional strategy for teaching content. The Media and Information
Literacy (MIL) is a subject to make a film production. Media and Information Literacy
(MIL), defined as the ability to access, analyze, and create media, is a prerequisite for
citizens to realize their rights to freedom of information and expression. We learn in this
subject how to make a documentary film and narrative film and their differences. It is in
this subject where we learn how a film is being produce. Film production is also
applicable in some topics about history, oral communication, or anything that may be
tackled by means of media.
