EAE – European Association for ETICS

The European Association for External Thermal Insulation Composite

Systems (ETICS) is the umbrella association of
❑ 11 national ETICS associations
❑ 6 European associations of leading suppliers (insulation materials,
reinforcements, profiles)
❑ 8 supporting company members and institutes
▪ Manufacturers (Europeanwide, national)
▪ Mechanical fixings
▪ Research institute
EAE represents around 80 % of Europe‘s ETICS revenue – in total more
than 400 manufacturers, installers, institutes and national trade
associations.
The focus is on insulating external walls.

The European ETICS market

The role of different climate zones

❑ Europe can be basically divided in two major climate
zones
▪ Continental climate: cold winters, dry summers
▪ Moderate climate: influenced by Atlantic Ocean, less
sever frost or even no frost in winter, higher humidity level
▪ Assessment of systems by different frost-thaw test cycles
❑ Good experience with ETICS
▪ Systems basically work in all European climate zones
▪ Special attention to hygrothermal aspects if installed on
timber substrates
▪ Long-term study in Germany approves durability and long-
term performance of systems installed in the early
1970ies
▪ Depends on correct ETICS design (including construction
details, e.g. joints) and correct application

demand is consumed in
buildings

More than 40% built be occupied in 2050
before 1960; 90% built

The European ETICS market

Developments driven by EPBD

❑ Conversion of national requirements
▪ EPBD set common framework and objectives, e.g. nZEB
▪ transformation to national regulation: converging requirements
▪ NECPs: different measures to stimulate the market considering national
circumstances
❑ Conversion of ETICS use
▪ Especially young markets performed pretty well in recent years, e. g.
France, Italy
▪ ETICS became standard solution in new build and refurbishment
❑ Conversion of technical developments
▪ Average insulation equals more or less in Member States
▪ Development of better insulation products with improved thermal
resistance both existing products (EPS, MW) and new products (e.g. PF,
PU)
▪ System loyalty improved: delivery via system manufacturer

NECPs leading to converging requirements

❑ National energy and climate plans (NECPs) lead to
converging average insulation thicknesses accross
Europe.

ETICS & communication

What has been achieved to date?

❑ European Application Guideline as
a tool to establish common quality
standards for ETICS application at
high level - adopted by 7 national
members, plus Slovenia, China and
Japan;
❑ „System loyality pays off“ brochure
to strengthen the system approach as
reliable basis for warranties and
investor‘s safety;
❑ Development of quality guidelines for
system components.

ETICS & communication

Joint PR activities
❑ European ETICS Forum: high-profile
European platform to discuss and present
forward-looking energy-efficient methods of
construction using ETICS → 5th European
ETICS Forum in 2020
❑ European Energy Saving Guide: EAE
publication summarizing relevant facts and
figures about energy efficiency in the EU;
sharpened EAE’s profile on European level
(2013 – 2016 – next: 2020)
❑ ETICS are amazing: image brochure to
create awareness for ETICS and their
benefits

Member of SACO consortium

ETICS & communication

EAE Award
❑ ETHOUSE Award well established in Austria
❑ Annual INCA award in the UK
❑ Aim: create awareness for energy efficient construction, demonstrating
that energy efficiency and aesthetics are not contradictory!

Partner of Renovate Europe Campaign

Political communications campaign with
the ambition to reduce the energy demand
of the EU building stock by 80% until 2050
compared to 2005 levels through
legislation and ambitious renovation
programmes.
This will bring the energy performance of
the entire building stock in the EU to an
nZEB performance level.
