RAN Solutions Key Highlights

 Scalable Architecture for Integrated

(Femto/Smallcell) as well Split Architecture
HetNet
(vRAN with CUPS)

 CU – DU Split architecture through 3GPP

7
O-RAN Alignment in 5GNR RAN

• Option – 2 Split supported via F1 Interface

(3GPP)

• Option – 7.2 Split supported via Upper and

Lower L1 Split (Intel Layer 1)

• CU-Control Plane and User Plane Split

supported via E1 Interface (3GPP)

• OAM Uses
• NETCONF as Transport
• YANG derived from TS 28.541 v16.1.0
• Flat Model Deployment as defined by
O-RAN-WG1 OAM Architecture
v01.00.06

8
LTE – 5GNR Coexistence Overview

• 3GPP Release 15 Feature

• Allows the deployment of both 4G LTE and
5G NR in the same frequency band and
dynamically allocates spectrum resources
between the two technologies based on user
demand.
• Idea is to give the Service Providers a
coverage layer for 5GNR in low BW
frequencies that are already in use by LTE
without requiring refarming

• RAN Changes (4G Software Upgrade, 5G

New Radio)
• Enhanced Scheduler Algorithm
• Co-channel Interference Mitigation
• Resource Coordination

9
LTE – 5GNR Coexistence – RAN Enhancements

- Controller Entity decides Spectrum sharing

configurations.

- Spectrum Management module at eNB/gNB to request

Controller for operational frequency configuration. -
Spectrum Sharing Group ID

- Coordination between eNB and gNB while scheduling.

- Interference mitigation techniques over X2 interface

- Static
- Pre-Configured frequency/PRB.
- Dynamic
- Slot Level muting
- Rate Matching

10
Network Slicing Overview

• Network Slicing enables creation of

multiple virtual networks using one
physical network

• These multiple virtual networks can be

mapped to multiple services with different
Quality of Service (QoS) and Service
Level Agreements (SLA)

• Network Slicing Framework is typically

adopted End-to-End across UE, RAN and
CN by Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) RAN Slicing Framework

• RAN Changes shall incorporate sliceable

resources such as Physical Radio
Resource (PRBs) as well Platform
Resources (Memory, CPU etc)
