1.3 PRODUCT CHARACTERISTICS

1.3.1 Weldable reinforcing steel
Weldability requirement for rebar is indicated by the terms of carbon equivalent value

Carbon equivalent value equation

Eq (1)

2
1.3.1.1 Chemical Composition
Table 3: Chemical Composition (max by mass %)

 The values of individual elements and the carbon equivalent shall not exceed the limits specified in
Table

1.3.1.2 Mechanical Properties

 Tensile Properties
Table 4: Condition of Testing

Table 5: Characteristic Tensile Properties

 Fatigue Strength
Reinforcing bars, coils and decoiled products shall be subject to fatigue testing.
When submitted to axial force controlled fatigue testing, using a stress ratio (σ min./ σ max.) of 0.2,
and stress range as given in Table 6, test samples shall survive five million stress cycles.
Table 6: Fatigue Test Condition

 Bend Performance

 Bend performance shall be demonstrated by means of the following rebend test.

 Bend the test pieces through an angle of 90°, around a mandrel with a diameter not exceeding those
specified in Table 7, age the test piece and then bend back by at least 20°.
 After the test, the specimen shall show no sign of fracture or cracks visible to a person of normal or
corrected vision

1.3.2 Steel Wire for The Reinforcement
Based on mechanical properties, Grade 500 is specified for plain, indented and ribbed wires. Grade
250 is specified as an option for plain wires only.

1.3.2.1 Chemical Composition

Table 8: Chemical Composition (max by mass %)

1.3.2.2 Mechanical Properties

 Tensile Properties
Conditions of Testing
 Wire test pieces shall be in the straightened and aged condition.
 Decoiled wire test pieces shall be in the aged condition.
 Ageing method: heat the test piece to 100 °C, maintain at this temperature (±10 °C) for
a period of 60min, and then cool in still air to room temperature. The method of
heating shall be left to the discretion of the manufacturer.

Table 9: Characteristic Tensile Properties

 Bend Performance
Bend performance shall be demonstrated by means of the following rebend test method.
After the test, the specimen shall show no sign of fracture or cracks visible to a person of normal or
corrected vision.
