INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND STUDIES

Portable charger which is pretty well-known as power bank is the product that we
decided for our project. In this era, everyone regardless of age and career using mobile phone
frequently and facing problems when battery is low. This make peoples’ life a bit complicated
as we need phone for transportation or even food because we need to use apps in phone such as
Grab and Food panda. Hence, with using our product, this problem can be overcome easily and
safely. The product we chosen is eco-friendly and sustainable so there will be no harm to the
environment. Power banks owns the concept where it has been developed along with the
growth which is rapid and digital products popularizations. Power banks are actually the
portable batteries that are using the circuitry in order to control any power in and power out.
Power banks literally can be charged up using a USB charger when the power is available to
use. When there is no power, the power banks are then needed to be charged by using the
normal charger that we use for phone. Portable chargers are created to have the functions of
charging battery-powered devices such as hand phones and also a host of other devices that
would normally use a USB charger. Power banks are created around in May 2013. A high
school student, Eesha Khare, a teen girl from California , created a supercapacitor that literally
serves as an energy storage device which can hold a lot of energy in a small space. The bigger
the size, the more the power and longer it can be used. The quality of the portable charger
depends mostly on the quality of the batteries used and the protection board. Power banks are
actually all the rage, they came in many types of shapes and sizes.

SCOPE OF WORK (SOW)

1.1 Project Goals

The project goals are:

1. User can easily charge devices at any time.
2. User can charge devices at anywhere.
3. User need not to plug in charger many times to charge. Hence, can save cost of
electricity
4. Easy to carry along with the user.

1
1.2 Objective

The objective of this project are

1. To determine how power bank able to save time
2. To determine how power bank able to electricity

1.3 Works

1.3.1 Project management

The project management for our project do involve some software skills such as Microsoft
Project. With using this software, we need to create Gantt chart, project network and so on
in order to complete this project successfully.

1.3.2 Design of the product

The design of this product actually do involves the standard designing of assemble part for
components inside the portable charger such as rechargeable batteries.

1.3.3 Bills of materials

Some important budget planning was done systematically in order to make user affordable to
buy. The bills for this materials does not cost much as the components used was pretty easy
to get.

1.3.4 Project Development

The project development for our project was handled systematically in order to avoid last
minute work. The project involves the works of drawing the diagram of schematic of the
portable charge which have three sides (3D drawing). Furthermore, some electrical skills to
fix components inside the power bank do take important places.

1.3.5 Project Finished

The project was completed without any delay and went through some important tests likes
anti-rusting test. The project was tested and no harm caused to the user.
1.4 Limitation

2
As every technological devices, our power bank also has some limits such as
1. Not made to be a water resistance product.
2. The average service life for the portable charger is 3 years.
3. The size or capacity of our product got three which is 10000mAh, 15000mAh and
20000mAh.

1.5 Deliverables

The deliverables of our product to make people to save electrical energy as electrical energy
waste in our country is increasing tremendously. With using our product, user need to only
charge the power bank once in a day as the can charge our USB portable devices three to five
times ( depends on the size ) per day. We have the AC to DC converter that have the capabilities
to convert different value of voltages based on the rectifier. A rectifier actually helps in
operating the electrical devices with transferring the AC to DC even the place has no current.

1.6 Stakeholders

1. Students
2. Business people
3. Traveller
4. Working people

1.7 Standards

The standard test of quality assurance will be done by:

1. SIRIM

1.8 Milestones
This project was started on 17th October 2019 and completed on 11th November 2019. The
duration in order to complete this project is almost on month.

3
1.9 Assumption
This project will be done before the due date as we divided the group work equally. The work
divided equally to them group members based on their skills towards certain elements such as
IT skills. Other than that, we hope that this product will attract people and support this product
continuously.

PROJECT NETWORK

The project network diagram is a flow chart graphically represent the sequence, start

and finish times of the project job pelan of the activities. The product we decide to design is

eco-friendly portable charger.

The capacity of the eco-friendly charger contain of three size which are 10000mAh,

15000mAh and 20000mAh. The different size of the portable charger have different price. The

material for the shell we decided to use is aluminium and metallic semi-transparent plastic.

Moreover, the component for the eco-friendly portable charger include AC to DC converter,

rechargable batteries, switch, USB port and LED indicator light.

The AC to DC converter include transformer, rectifier, filter and low dropout voltage

regulator to convert AC to DC. The function of the transformer is to step down the 230VAC to

13VAC. The material we decide to use for the transformer is silicon steel. Next, the function of

the rectifier is to convert the 13VAC to DC voltage. The material use for rectifier is silicon.

Moreover, the filter is use to smooth the output voltage. The material use for the filter is

aluminium, ceramic, mica. Then, the function for low dropout voltage regulator is to regulate

the output voltage. The material we design to use for low dropout voltage regulator is silicon.

The material for rechargable batteries is lithium ion cell which is 18mm diameter and

65mm height. There is two colour for LED indicator lights which are red and green. The

material for red LED indicator lights is alluminium gallium arsenide which will light on when

the portable charger is in a low battery condition. Then material we decide to use for the green

LED indicator light is gallium phosphide. The green LED indicator light will light on when the

portable charger is in a full battery condition. The average service life for the portable charger

is around 3 years. The project network diagram is using acitivity-on-arrow to approaches which

is using an arrow to depict an activity.

CRITICAL PATH OF THE PROJECT NETWORK

17
Critical path is known as the longest path of a diagram of network. The task in the
critical path will have some effect on the due date of the project. If any task of the critical path
is delayed, the project to complete successfully will be delayed too as the consequences. The
longest part of this portable charger project is shown in the above pictures. In the network
diagram, the red colour alike box and arrow is involved in critical part. In the column that
written, it is stated whether the task name is involved or not in the critical part.

The critical path in our project is to complete the alternating current (AC) to
direct current (DC) converter. The components of the alternating current (AC) to direct current
(DC) converter are transformer that is made of silicon or steel, rectifier (4 diodes) which is
made of silicon, filter (capacitor) that is made of aluminium , ceramic and mica and low
dropout voltage regulator which is made of silicon. The process to complete the components of
the alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) converter took a longer time compared to
time taken to complete other components because there are many steps to prepare it and some
electrical works such as soldering and wiring took place. We need longer time as these kind of
work need focus and patients in order to do a good soldering.

Firstly, we placed the transformer before connecting it to the rectifier which is the 4
diodes that is made up of silicon. Then, we placed the filter which is the capacitor carefully in
order to avoid the wrong connection. The average service life which is 3 years and test are also
in the critical path. We will need a longer time in order to the SIRIM company to certified our
portable charger is safe.

18
CONCLUSION

To conclude, the project named Eco-friendly Portable Charger were chosen because it is
a must have item for each and every one of us if they are using smart phones which makes all
of us fitted in that category. Not to forget the eco-friendly traits that was implemented in the
product/project. This project gave more understanding and knowledge towards project
management and also how to handle problems that arises during the project. Not only that, the
spendings for this project was all calculated in the budget section and spent accordingly. With
this section in this report, a project would not be over budgeted. From this assignment we were
able to complete a project more systematically and perfectly as it covers from dividing our task
until the end step which is to display the critical path.
