Strategy 1: Word Attack (Appendix 1)

Classification of the Strategy: Cognitive Strategy

Purpose: Learning vocabulary through applying word attack skills.

Main Ideas and Usage


By mastering this activity, learners can develop thinking skill, read extensively for information and
enjoyment with minimal guidance.

Steps:
1. Pupils are given explanation on the activity.
2. Each pupil is given 5 sticky notes.
3. In 5 minutes, pupils think the possible word that related to the questions.
4. Pupils have to paste the sticky notes on the wall according to the questions given.
5. Pupils walk around to check their peers’ answers and give response.
6. Pupils choose 3 words and write sentences independently.
7. Pupils read aloud their sentences.
Strategy 2: Family Tree (Appendix 2)

Classification of the Strategy: Memory Strategy

Purpose: Recalling vocabulary through an image

Main Ideas and Usage


By mastering this activity, learners can enhance memory skill in completing the task with minimal
guidance.

Steps:

1. Pupils are given a picture of a family tree.


2. Pupils are given a passage related to the picture with blanks.
3. Pupils read and answer the task given.
4. Pupils complete the task – fill in the blanks with given words.
5. Pupils share their answers with their shoulder partner.

Strategy 3: Battle Ships (Appendix 3)


Classification of the Strategy: Social Strategy

Purpose: To get learners to become active participants in class through interaction with others and
sharing of knowledge they have.

Main Ideas and Usage


By mastering this activity, learners can improve collaboration and communication skill between friends
with minimal guidance.

Steps:

1. Pupils are divided into groups of four or five.


2. Pupils are explained about the activity – Battle Ships
3. Pupils are to name their ships, for example: Star Ship
4. One ship is given a lexical area of vocabulary and each member must find their own word.
5. Each pupil in the ship takes turn to say their word.
6. Pupils can’t late more than 2 – 3 seconds and the word can’t be repeated – the ship sunk.
7. Last pupil in the group says a word and attack the other group with different area of vocabulary.
8. Last stand ship will be the winner.
