PART – A
(Answer All the Questions) (5 x 2 = 10)
1. Different types of balancing couple.
2. What do you meant by static and dynamic balancing
3. Define swaying couple.
4. How will you classify vibration?
5. What are the basic elements of a vibrating system?
PART – B
(Answer any Four Questions) (4x10=40)
6. A shaft carries four masses A,B,C and D of magnitude 200kg, 300kg, 400kg and 200kg
respectively and revolving at radii 80mm,70mm,60mm and 80mm in planes measured
from A at 300mm, 400mm and 700mm.The angle between the cranks measured
anticlockwise are A to B 45◦, B to C 70◦ and C to D 120◦. The balancing masses are too
placed in planes X and Y. The distance between the planes A and X is 100mm, between X
and Y is 400mm and between Y and D is 200mm. If the balancing masses revolve at a
radius of 100mm find the magnitude and angular positions.
7. A shaft carries four masses in parallel planes A.B,C and D in this order along its length.
The masses B and C are 18 kg and 12.5 kg respectively and each has an eccentricity of
60mm. The masses A and D have an eccentricity of 80mm. The angle between the
masses at B and C is 100◦ and than between the masses B and A is 190◦, both being
measured in the same direction the axial distance between the planes A and B is 100mm
and that between B and C is 200mm. If the shaft is in complete dynamic balance,
determine 1.the magnitude of the masses at A and D. 2.the distance between planes A
and D; and 3. The angular position of the mass at D.
8. The three cranks of a three cylinder locomotive are all on the same axle and are set at
120◦. The pitch of the cylinder is 1 meter and the stroke of each position is 0.6 m. The
reciprocating masses are 300kg for inside cylinder and 260kg for each outside cylinder
and the planes of rotation of the balances masses are 0.8 m from the inside crank. If
40% of the balance masses are 0.8 m from the inside crank.
a. The magnitude and the position of the balancing masses required at a radius of
0.6 m; and
b. The hammer blow per wheel when the axle makes 6 r.p.s
9. A vertical shaft of 5 mm diameter is 200 mm long and is supported in long bearings at its
ends. A disc of mass 50kg is attached to the center of the shaft. Neglecting any increases
in stiffness due to the attachment of the disc to the shaft find the critical speed of
rotation and the maximum bending stress when the shaft is rotating at 75% of the
critical speed. The center of the disc is 0.25mm from the geometric axis of the shaft.
E = 200 GN/m2
10. A vertical steel shaft 15mm diameter is held in long bearing 1 meter apart and carries at
its middle a disc of mass 15kg. The eccentricity of the center of gravity of the disc from
the center of the rotor is 0.30mm.The modulus of elasticity for the shaft materials is 200
GN/m2 and permissible stress is 70 MN/m2. Determine :
a. The critical speed of the shaft and
b. The range of speed over which it is unsafe to run the shaft. Neglect the mass of
the shaft.
11. An instruments vibrates with a frequency of 1 Hz when there is no damping when the
damping is provided, the frequency of damped vibrations was observed to be 0.9Hz
find;
a. The damping factor and
b. Logarithmic decrement.
