seeking expressions of interest from
qualified training providers to provide
hands on and on the job training and
advisory services on improved customer
services in Government Ministries,
Departments and Agencies throughout
the civil service.
Mr Chand said the Commission was
interested in securing the services of a
training provider who would be required
to visit relevant ministries, departments
and agencies to provide on the job training
to selected staff on telephone answering,
customer services, punctuality and
responsiveness and public relations, etc.

As such, there is increasing realisation in
ministries, departments and agencies in

services at all levels.
He said the Commission wanted to work
with line ministries, departments and
agencies to provide hands-on training and
build capacities in this important area.

the first prize in a national public speaking
contest in New Plymouth.

“My First (and last) Scuba Diving
Experience” speech.
A Toastmasters governor Myrna Contreras
said Viane joined Toastmasters in 2009 with
the (then North Shore Council) Takapuna-
based Taka-Talkers Club and won the club,
area and divisional competitions to qualify
for the nationals this year.
“It is the first time a Pacific Islander has
won the nationals and in such a short
time,” she said.
“His speech was based on his scuba
diving lesson at Yadua Taba in Bua during
his stint as the Director for the National
Trust for Fiji and was well received by
contest judges and most especially the
audience.”
Viane migrated to New Zealand in 2004
and works as an Area Spatial Planner for
the newly created Auckland Council and
is based in Takapuna on the North Shore.
“It has been an uncertain and traumatic
period for Auckland Council workers
but it is important to remain positive and
create humor in our day-to-day lives,”
Viane said.
“I am truly humbled to be able to achieve
this and in a way, this win is for all Pacific
Islanders and fellow migrants with English
as a second language and to prove that we
can achieve in areas we have shied away
from such as Toastmasters.”

Wendy Sharpe, 50, said of the beauty
of Savusavu: “Drawing and painting is
a wonderful thing for everyone to do, it
changes the way you see the world and is
fascinating and compelling, especially in
a place like Fiji.
“The people are wonderful and there
are several beautiful and breathtaking
landscapes which any artist would like to
capture,” Ms Sharpe said.
She indulged herself in a week-long
workshop at Savusavu’s Daku Resort.

and yet so beautiful.

The resort has since April had a monthly

grant and support for the biggest foreign

Pacific Sun Announces End of Britten Norman

Nadi, Fiji -- In a move that began with the
withdrawal of Islander aircraft scheduled
services to the Mamanucas in July, domestic
airline Pacific Sun has announced that due
to economic reasons it will be ceasing all
Islander services from today, Wednesday
November 24..
This announcement means that as of today,
Pacific Sun will not be operating any Islander
aircraft in its fleet. It will, however, continue
to operate both 42 seat ATR-42s as well as all
three of the more economical 18 seat DHC-6
Twin Otter aircraft.
General Manager of Pacific Sun Jim Samson
said the only destination significantly affected
by this decision is Levuka. “With the removal
of the Islanders from service, we will be
ending Pacific Sun’s daily flights to Levuka
from Nausori airport,” said Mr Samson.

declared a prohibited immigrant under
Section 13(2) (g) of the Immigration
Act 2003.
The Act, in general, contains the laws
that governs the entry of non-citizens
into Fiji and sets the parameters of what
they are allowed to do while in Fiji.
Commodore Bainimarama in clarifying
Roth’s departure said his declaration
was based on reliable information and
subsequent verification and confirmation
by relevant authorities, which showed
that he (Roth) had been acting in a
manner prejudicial to good governance
and public order by interfering in the
domestic affairs and governance of Fiji.
This decision, he said does not impact
on Government’s positive attitude
towards overseas investors and the
business community.

Envoys visit Fiji’s acting PM Export earnings decrease

acting Prime Minister Joketani Cokanasiga.

Mexico established relationships 35 years
ago and it’s important that we continue
especially now since there are a lot of
pressing issues that need to be addressed
not only here but around the world like
climate change,” said Ms Gargallo. The

Zealand, Arie Cornelis Andreas Van
Der Wiel, briefed Mr Cokanasiga on
economic activities as well as plans for
his homeland.
“Our agriculture sector is well developed
and we keep pushing for more technologies
that we know will boost production,” said
Mr Van Der Wiel.
Mr Cokanasiga commented that Fiji
had set up a Demand Driven Approach
Program (DDA) that would try to reduce
the importation of fruits and vegetables
and increase our exports.
FIJI’S total exports for July alone this year
decreased by $20.6 million to $98 million
compared to the $118.6 million it recorded
for the same month in 2009.
Domestic exports decreased by $20.4 million
to $67.7 million and re-exports, mainly of
petroleum products sold to ships, aircraft and
pacific neighbouring countries, dropped by
$0.3 million to $30.3 million.
The Fiji Islands Bureau of Statistic’s recent
release of July merchandise trade figures
noted the $39.5 millionincrease in total
imports from last July to $269.8 million for
July this year.

David Roth issue not against
Fiji Water
The Permanent Secretary for Information,
Sharon Smith-Johns has reassured
the business community and potential
investors that the David Roth issue was
between Roth and the government, not
against Fiji Water.
Smith-Johns said there is a lot of
speculation but the issue has already been
clarified by the Prime Minister.
Smith-Johns also said she and other
government representatives are expecting
questions about the affair during the
two day Fiji Australia and New Zealand
Pacific Business Forum in Sigatoka.
Fiji Water’s Director of Operations
Anna Morris said it is business as usual
at the company based in Ra despite the
deportation of executive David Roth.
Roth left last week after being declared a
prohibited immigrant.
Morris has no further comment to make
at this stage.

B.C. set to turn into substantial snowfall

•Equip your vehicle: We issued an
information bulletin earlier this week to
answer customers’ questions about winter
tires and insurance, but preparing your
vehicle for winter driving comes down
to much more than just choice of tires.
Don’t use cruise control on slippery roads;
check your tire pressure as they can deflate
quickly in the cold; low-beam lights are
more effective in the snow; and keep your
gas tank full to prevent freezing in extreme
temperatures. Keep a blanket in your car
just in case you are unfortunate enough to
get stranded in these wintery conditions.
•Adapt our behaviour: While preparing
our vehicles for winter driving is vital,
nothing is more important than adjusting
our behaviour as drivers. When we see a
speed limit – say, 90km on a highway –
that’s the limit in ideal road conditions.
Conditions right now are not ideal so slow
down and leave more space between you
and other vehicles on the road to give you
the time and distance needed to best avoid
any potential hazards.
•When things get slippery: One of the
most challenge road hazards at this time of
year is black ice – it’s virtually impossible
to see ahead of time, and that’s why it’s

discouraging tourist and transport operators
from charging exorbitant prices, the Fiji
Consumers Association has recommended.
The association made the recommendation
in its submissions on the national budget.

“New teacher requirements”
TEACHERS will need to be fluent in
Hindi and Fijian to graduate from the
Fiji National University starting next
year.
This was the message from vice
chancellor Dr Ganesh Chand at the
opening of the university’s National
Education Conference in Lautoka.
Dr Chand said by next year all teacher
trainees would be required to be fluent
in Hindi and Fijian or they would not
be able to graduate.
He confirmed that the level of
competency in both languages would
need to be according to the Nai Lalakai
and Shanti Dut standard.
Dr Chand said the move was an initial
response to a number of challenges by
the university in regard to the People’s
Charter for Change and Development.
He said he hoped it would be a strong
motivation for other sectors of society
to do the right thing in ensuring a
society that respected diversity and
encouraged unity. “For without
language understanding, there is not
much of a chance for society to be
united,” said Dr Chand.
He also commented on the issue of
school zoning, which is scheduled to

“This is the first time we have had a
serious look at concrete measures to
integrate schools and make parents
more responsible for the quality of
schools in the neighborhood,” Dr

“Now with zoning, it will be in their
interests to ensure the neighborhood
schools improve on their educational
quality and become more accountable
for the quality and efficiency of the
delivery of education in those schools.”
Dr Chand also announced a new Fiji
National University program to capture
in print the wisdom of people who had
extensive experience in various sectors
which had remained undocumented.
“What we intend to do from next year
is to establish a special program to get
people to write their experiences, so a
regular feature of FNU will be what we
call writers in residence, but they won’t
be writing stories, they will be writing
actual experiences in policy-making or
their autobiographies,” he said.

Drop in Telephone Rates
THE Commerce Commission’s recent
move to reduce mobile phones’ inter-
connectivity rates from 18cents to
17cents is expected to ease expenses
for consumers.
Commission chairman Doctor
Mahendra Reddy said the reduced
price came into effect November 17.
There was also a 7cents increase in
the wholesale rate for all incoming
international calls - from 23cents to
30cents a unit.
These two signofocant developments
were announced by Dr Reddy and the
Minister for Communications, Aiyaz
Sayed-Khaiyum, at a press conference
at Suvavou House.
Dr Reddy said the reduction in the
inter-connectivity rate was for calls
that would be made from one mobile
network to another mobile network.

says he will be in Fiji at the end of the

with the budget statement.”

Warning of disease
outbreak
The Ministry of Health has given a
stern warning on the possibility of an
outbreak of diarrhoea, pneumonia and
influenza in every part of the country.
The warning came following wet
weather conditions experienced
throughout the country. Ministry’s
spokesperson, Peni Namotu said these
were high risk diseases at this time.

A group of Solomon Islands Ministers and
Permanent Secretaries are in the country
holding talks with the Public Service
Commission on civil service reforms that
Fiji is currently implementing.
Headed by the Minister for Public
Service, Douglas Ete, the group is
interested in hearing about Fiji’s civil
service reforms given the work they are
also pursuing in improving efficiencies
and service delivery in their own public

THE Land Transport Authority is warning
members of the public to register their
vehicles or be ready to pay a penalty of
up to $300.
LTA chief executive officer Naisa
Tuinaceva said their records showed
that in the past five years, about 15,000
vehicles were not presented for the annual
fitness check and registration.
He said the LTA classified those vehicles
as unregistered.
Under section 49 of the LTA Act 1998,
vehicles have to be registered annually.
Mr Tuinaceva said a certain percentage of
the 15,000 vehicles could be in some form
of wreck or derelict condition and were
not reported for proper deregistration with
the LTA.
However, he said, based on the number
of unregistered vehicles recorded, it was
believed that the majority of the vehicles
were being operated illegally.

BOAT - FIRST IN FIJI
APPROXIMATELY 600 empty plastic
beverage bottles were used to construct
what the owner believes is Fiji’s first
recycled bottle boat.
Measuring 4.5 metres long and 1.4 metres
wide, the Bottles Up boat was made from
the 600ml plastic bottles glued together
with a layer of foam underneath to aid in
floatation and some plastic sheeting for the
seats and floor deck.
Bottles Up will be used as a form of
activity for tourists to paddle around a
110ft-deep lake.

Airport pat-down leaves
traveler covered in urine
A TRAVELLER has been left humiliated,
crying and covered in his own urine
following an “invasive” pat-down airport
search.
Thomas Sayer, from Michigan, US, was
travelling to a wedding in Florida earlier
this month when the incident occurred.
Mr Sayer, 61, was selected for the enhanced
search after going through a scanner at
Detroit Metropolitan Airport.
A bladder cancer survivor, Mr Sayer
says the scanner must have picked up his
urostomy bag - which collects his urine
from an opening in his stomach.
“I have to wear special clothes and in order
to mount the bag I have to seal a wafer to
my stomach and then attach the bag. If the
seal is broken, urine can leak all over my
body and clothes” Mr Sayer told the media.
Mr Sayer said that the security officials
ignored him when he tried to tell them
about his medical condition until they
removed his top and his urostomy bag
became visible.

A new study has revealed that Indians and
Chinese managers are rated the best amongst
their employees.
The survey conducted by the Kenexa Research
Institute, a unit of Kenexa Corp, revealed that
only 35 percent of employees in Japan rated

US and UK tourists hurt as jet
boat crashes into cliff
in New Zealand
A DOZEN people have been hurt after
a jet boat carrying 14 holidaymakers
crashed into a cliff face near Queenstown
in central New Zealand on Monday.
The crash, which happened on the Shotover
River about 3:10pm local time, led to the
suspension of all operations by Shotover
Jet Ltd and an investigation by Maritime
New Zealand and the Department of
Labour, police said.
Of the 14 passengers on the jet boat, 12
were taken to the hospital - 5 with moderate
injuries, and 7 with minor.

“I am totally appalled by the fact that agents
that are performing these pat-downs have
so little concern for people with medical
conditions,” Mr Sawyer said.
He plans to file a formal complaint.
“No one living with an ostomy should
be afraid of flying because they’re afraid
of being humiliated at the checkpoint,”

prestigious Rhodes Scholarships
for all-expense-paid study at the

Boy gang-raped by 10 women at

knifepoint in Papua New Guinea
A 17-year-old village boy has been gang
raped by 10 knife-wielding women in
Papua New Guinea, police say.
Southern Highlands Province police
commander Teddy Tei said the gang of
women attacked the schoolboy just outside
the provincial centre of Mendi.
“This is a serious matter and police are trying
to identify who these animals are,” he said.
“More than 10 women with kitchen knives
attacked him and four women had sexual
intercourse with him”.
The boy went to hospital for treatment, he
said.
Police commander Tei said he feared the
women may have infected the young man
with HIV/AIDs.
“HIV/AIDs is a problem in PNG and I am
concerned the women might be infected.
“I always warn the women to be careful at
night but I am now warning the men too.
“Police are investigating but it is not clear
why the attack happened,” he said.
Last week a young Australian woman on a
surfing trip was raped in Madang province on
PNG’s northwestern coast.
The woman was with three other Australians
who were carjacked, robbed of all their
possessions and taken to a secluded spot
where they were bound to trees.
An August 2008 UNICEF report stated that
PNG has one of the world’s highest rates of
sexual violence.
“Police say that eight per cent of women
have been raped, but rape is an under-
reported crime, so the reality is certainly

Lamb Roast
Directions:
Preheat the oven to 290F.
Cut the potatoes and sweet potatoes into
inch-thick slices. Cut the onions in half and
then place vegetables into a baking tray.
Drizzle the vegetables with olive oil and
sprinkle on some salt. Place tray in the oven
on the bottom rack and roast.
Cover the lamb in olive oil and then sprinkle
with sea salt.

Fish and shellfish benefits
We should be eating at least two
portions of fish a week including one
of oily fish. Fish and shellfish are good
sources of a variety of vitamins and
minerals, and oily fish is particularly
rich in omega 3 fatty acids. But if we
want to make sure there are enough fish
to eat now, and in the future, we need
to start thinking about the choices we
make when we choose which fish we
eat.
Why is fish a healthy choice?
Fish and shellfish are good sources of
essential vitamins, such as niacin, and
minerals, such as selenium and iodine.
Different types of seafood also give
different health benefits. Check out the
lists below.
Oily fish
•includes fish such as salmon, mackerel,
sardines, trout and herring
•is rich in omega 3 fatty acids, which
helps prevent heart disease
•is a good source of vitamins A and D
White fish
•includes fish such as haddock, plaice,
pollack, coley and cod
•is very low in fat. This means, just like
beans and pulses or chicken without
the skin, white fish is a healthier low-
fat alternative to, for example, red or
processed meat that tends to be higher
in fat, especially saturated fat
•contains some omega 3 fatty acids, but
at much lower levels than oily fish.
Shellfish
•includes prawns, mussels and
langoustine
•is low in fat
•is a good source of selenium, zinc,
iodine and copper
•some types such as mussels, oysters,
squid and crab are also good sources of
omega 3 fatty acids.

choice, remember to go for steamed,
baked or grilled fish or shellfish, rather
than fried. This is because frying makes
fish and shellfish much higher in fat,
especially if they’re cooked in batter.
But this doesn’t mean you need to stop
having an occasional portion of fish
and chips.
But don’t eat too much fish
Although most people should be eating
more fish for their health, there are
maximum levels recommended for oily
fish and crab. Also, again for health
reasons, adults should have no more
than one portion of swordfish, shark or
marlin a week. This is because these fish
could contain high levels of mercury.
People who eat a lot of fish every
week should try to eat as wide a
variety as possible not only for
good health but also because of
concerns about numbers of fish.
Do you take supplements?
If you take fish liver oil supplements,
remember these are high in vitamin A.
This is because fish store vitamin A in
their livers. Having too much vitamin
A over many years could be harmful.
If you take supplements containing
vitamin A, make sure you don’t have
more than a total of 1.5mg a day from
your food and supplements.

The type of omega 3 fatty acids found
in fish (they’re actually called ‘long
chain omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty
acids’) help prevent heart disease.

These fatty acids are also
important for women who
are pregnant or breastfeeding
because they help a baby’s
nervous system to develop.
Oily fish such as mackerel,
sardines, trout, herring and
salmon are the richest source of
omega 3 fatty acids. The main
shellfish sources are mussels,
oysters, squid and crab. Some
white fish and other shellfish
also contain omega 3 fatty acids
but not as much as oily fish.
You can check which fish are
oily and which aren’t in the
table below. And while you’re
looking at the lists, have a
think about how many of these fish
you usually eat. Why not try eating
something different?
Fresh tuna is an oily fish and is high
in omega 3 fatty acids. But when it’s
canned, these fatty acids are reduced
to levels similar to white fish. So,
although canned tuna is a healthy
choice for most people, it doesn’t count
as oily fish.
How much oily fish?
Most people should be eating more oily
fish because omega 3 fatty acids are
very good for the health of our hearts.
However, there are recommendations

Why are there limits for oily fish?
Oily fish can contain low levels of
pollutants that can build up in the body.
The pollutants found in oily fish include
dioxins and PCBs (polychlorinated
biphenyls). Dioxins and PCBs tend to
be found in all foods containing fats.
They have no immediate effect on
health, but can be harmful because
they build up in our bodies over time.
The recommended maximums for
oily fish are lower for most girls and
women because high levels of dioxins
and PCBs in the diet could affect the
development of a baby in the future.
If a woman changes her diet when
she becomes pregnant, or when she
starts trying for a baby, this won’t
change the levels of dioxins and
PCBs that are already in her body. So
it’s a good idea to limit the amount
of oily fish eaten from a young age.
Omega 3 fatty acids are good for
a baby’s development so pregnant
women shouldn’t stop eating oily fish.
So remember, don’t give up eating oily
fish because the health benefits outweigh
the risks as long as you don’t eat more
than the recommended maximums.
Recent surveys have shown that some
other fish, as well as brown crab meat,
might also have similar levels of
dioxins and PCBs as oily fish.

Anyone who regularly eats a lot of

Edmonton’s Expo Refugees can be extradited to face crime

appears dead after the federal government
said it wouldn’t follow through with
funding, infuriating the mayor.
“I’ve never been as mad at anything and
just so disappointed in the lack of vision
of a government,” Mayor Stephen Mandel
said during an emotional news conference.
Heritage Minister James Moore met with
Mandel earlier in the day and said the project
was far too expensive. The event is estimated
to cost $2.3 billion and the federal government
was asked to chip in $706 million.

OTTAWA — Canadian laws protecting
refugees do not preclude the federal
justice minister from ordering their
extradition when they are wanted for
alleged crimes in the countries they
fled, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled
Thursday.
While the court affirmed Justice Minister
Rob Nicholson’s discretion to extradite
suspects who had previously secured
refugee protection, he was nonetheless
ordered to reconsider his “unreasonable”
decision to surrender a Quebec Roma
couple to their native Hungary, where
they are wanted for fraud involving
$2,700.
In another case, the court also sent the
minister back to the drawing board to
rethink his decision to extradite another
Quebec refugee, also of Roma origin, to
his homeland of Romania, where he was
sentenced to a prison term for forging
visas for two people in exchange for
$1,800.
The Canadian Council for Refugees said
the unanimous court rulings are a victory
because the judges put the onus on the
justice minister to show that the refugees
no longer face persecution in their home
countries.
“The bar for sending a convention
refugee back is pretty high,” said
spokesman Andrew Brouwer. “They’re
saying you can only do it if a refugee is
no longer a refugee.”
One ruling is a victory for Joszef Nemeth
and Joszefne Nemeth, who secured
refugee status in 2002, three years
before Hungarian authorities issued an
international warrant for their arrest to
face charges of selling the right of lease
for premises in Budapest, despite the
fact that they did not possess the right to
lease the flat.
The justice minister, in his order to
extradite the Nemeths, concluded that
conditions for Roma have improved
in Hungary since the Nemeths fled to
Canada in 2001.
“The minister applied incorrect legal
principles and acted unreasonably in
reaching his conclusions,” wrote Justice
Thomas Cromwell in the 9-0 ruling.
“He imposed too high a threshold for
determining whether the Nemeths would
face persecution on their return and
placed the burden of proof on this issue
on the Nemeths notwithstanding the
earlier finding that they were refugees.”
In a separate decision, the court also
said that Nicholson’s order to extradite
Tiberiu Gavrila to Romania was
“unreasonable and must be set aside.”
Nicholson’s spokeswoman, Pamela
Stephens, noted that the court confirmed
it is possible to surrender refugees
in certain circumstances, rather than
finding that their status “does not act as
an absolute bar to extradition.”
Lawyers for the refugees had argued that
it should only be possible if their status
is revoked, but the court concluded that
is not necessary.
However, the bench stressed that the
minister must refuse surrender if he “is
satisfied that the conditions which led to
conferral of refugee status still exist and
it is not shown that the person sought
was or has become ineligible for refugee
status.”
The court also reaffirmed international
treaties and domestic law, saying that
an undertaking not to return refugees to
persecution “is a cornerstone of refugee
protection.”
Janet Dench, executive director of the
Canadian Council for Refugees, said
that requests to extradite refugees do not
happen often, but she noted that when
they do, the countries in question are
usually seeking the return of individuals
of Roma origin, making her suspect
that the persecution of that particular
minority continues in absentia.

Similarly, the late C.S. Lewis, professor
at Oxford University in England, was an
agnostic who denied the deity of Christ
for years. But he, too, in intellectual
honesty, submitted to Jesus as his God and
Savior after studying the overwhelming
evidence for his deity. Over the years, he
wrote many books to uphold the ideals of
Christianity, including Mere Christianity
and The Screwtape Letters.
Many other men and women in our century
have dedicated their lives to spreading the
Christian message, often braving torture
and death. For example, one of Romania’s
most widely known Christian leader,
Richard Wurmbrand, spent 14 years in
prison and was repeatedly tortured for
running the underground church under
Communist rule. Even after international
pressure secured his release from
Romania, he continued to receive death
threats from the Communist regime. But
these attempts at intimidation did not
silence him. He kept publicly spreading
the good news of Christ.
Similarly, in Korea, Joon Gon Kim, a
well-known Christian leader, witnessed
his wife and father slaughtered before his
eyes by Communist sympathizers from
his own village. He himself was beaten
senseless and left for dead. He survived
the beating and asked God to give him
love for the souls of his enemies. He
eventually led 30 Communists to believe
in Christ, including the person responsible
for the death of his family members.
Not only does the love of Christ impel
Christians to face persecution and death
but also to work to make the world a
better place. Mother Theresa was an
outstanding example of a life poured in
the service of Christ. Of her well-known
ministry among the poor, she said: “Our
work is only the expression of the love we
have for God.”
Like her, many others have given their
lives to serve the destitute and the outcast,
either in their homeland or abroad. William
and Katherine Booth, founders of the
Salvation Army, believed that ministering
to the poor was like ministering to Christ
himself. The movement they launched
enlisted the tireless efforts of enthusiastic
people who wanted to make a difference
in the world around them.
All of these Christian men and women have
found fulfillment and joy in following the
teachings of Jesus. They were transformed
when they met Christ and yielded their lives
to him. Each of them has made a positive
impact on the world.

car, why not use this opportunity to teach your
child some important road safety lessons. For
instance, you could teach your child to:
• always walk on the pavement or path if
there is one - never stray on to the road;
• walk on the inside of the sidewalk, as

single file on the right side of the road,
facing the traffic. This allows you to step

When you are out and about

Fijian soccer exponent, legendary midfielder Ivor Evans says
UEFA President Micheal Platini is on the ball when he said an
international sports police force is the answer to battle against
corruption in soccer worldwide.
Evans said this is a step in the right direction against many
countries including Fiji where corruption and match fixing
seems to be the order of all major tournaments.
“I know by me making this call doesn’t move a castle, but
the head of European soccer union certainly has what it
takes to push for a possible change with FIFA, worlds soccer
governance,” Evans said.
While Evans may not have a vote for an immediate
implementation of the force, he knows European union has,
who are courting for an introduction to fair play without
corruption at all levels.
He said match fixings have become too prevalent across the
globe and Fiji is no exception.
Evans hears of serious allegations of match rigging yearly at
major tournaments, where power players with deep pockets
fork out cash in exchange for results.
“This is to eliminate good teams from booking a berth to the
semi-finals,” hinted Evans.
Fiji Football Association President Shamsu Dean Shau Khan
claims corruption does not exist, but there is swirling evidence
surrounding the allegation.
He is not forthcoming to corruptions charges within his band.
“The agency when set up, would operate across the boarders as
the international sports police,” said Evans the former Fijian,
86’er and the White Cap’s star.
The countries brightest talent insists the new-formed
organization should have the power to investigate all codes
including countries that are affiliated with FIFA and its clubs
players.
All involved in inducements for results should be prosecuted and
banned from the sport for good, including team managements.
Khan has been in power for a quarter of a century, and there is
diminishing hope he’d ever make room for a successor.

Times Sports give Fiji soccer

The standard of soccer in Fiji has plummeted to
its all time low, according to Fiji Times Canada
sports correspondent Bobby Izaz Mohammed.
Mohammed who was at the 2010 IDC tournament
in Suva, said the sport in the country is on a
collision course if the leaders don’t act up now.
“It is just pathetic what I witnessed during the
games, the leadership of President Shamsu
Dean Sahu Khan is asleep at the switch,” said
Mohammed.
He says it appears Fiji FA is content with the
development they have at the present, yet to admit
there’s no program or an immediate plan in place
to salvage them from the poor showings at local
and international fixtures.
In the 70’s and 80’s Fiji beat Australia, New
Zealand and the South Pacific nations, today they
lose to Vanuatu and Solomon, they find it hard to
beat teams like Tuvalu, much has to do with the
deteriorating current body in the country , the Fiji
FA.
“This was quite evident at the IDC tournament.
He was disappointed at the lack of tactical aspect
of the game,” added Mohammed.
Mohammed couldn’t believe Fiji FA continued on
with the tournament on a ‘water pool’ field despite
repeated requests to cancel the tournament after
much of Suva was left reeling with cyclone like
weather.
What was surprising, the players complained of
soggy playing surface, only fit for ‘hippos’ to roam
freely than to have an average game of soccer.
“It was much like playing water polo.
Average because none of the games impressed
him, it was like a ‘Bazaar’, games where players
couldn’t get 2 passes together, the only pattern of
play Mohammed picked out was, “ Caqe Cici ”

hour, which blew the roof of the player’s stands
while Nadi-Nadroga game was underway.

delegate’s disapproval.
“Protests should not be initiated or entertained
after the final list has been approved, this was a
clear case of incompetent officials headed by
Khan. “The paid employees of Fiji FA must
be replaced with fresh faces who would do the
required job,“ Mohammed suggested.

Qantas celebrations
recognize pioneering spirit
Qantas has wrapped up two weeks of 90th
birthday celebrations in Queensland’s
outback, where the company began.
Hundreds of people attended celebrations
last weekend at the Qantas Founders
Museum in Longreach in the state’s central
west.
Governor-General Quentin Bryce flew in,
together with 250 guests from around the

She christened a replica of a DH 50 plane
built in 1926 and told the crowd she is

State-wide drug raids find
8000 cannabis plants
EIGHT thousand plants have now
been seized and 43 people arrested in
what Victoria Police describes as the
biggest set of drug raids in the state’s
history.
Details about the nationalities of those
arrested are not yet known, but police earlier
said there were “strong links” between the
cannabis-growing cartel and Vietnam, as
well as connections with New Zealand.
Police have also confirmed that they
suspect some of the drug money generated
from the sale of “high potency” marijuana
was to be used to buy heroin to import into
Australia.
Authorities say they expect more people
to be arrested after dozens of homes were
raided in the massive co-ordinated drug
blitz
Those arrested are likely to be charged
with a range of drug-related offences
including cultivate commercial quantity
of cannabis, traffic commercial quantity
of cannabis and possession.
The operation, which began about 7am,
involved 630 police working with federal
counterparts and officials from the
taxation and immigration departments.

hailed the raids as a blow at the heart of

are still ongoing, with 100 properties
expected to be raided by the end of the

Victoria Police against organized crime
to date,’’ Sir Ken told a press conference.
Sir Ken vowed that those involved,
believed to be groups mainly of
Vietnamese origin, and would be brought
to justice.
He also strongly denied suggestions that
the raids had been timed to happen in an
election week.
“It’s absolute rubbish,” he said.
“We’re here to get justice for people.
We’re not going to time our operations to
fit any political cycle. The government is
not aware of this operation.
“Any fool can go out and bust drug
syndicates at the street level.”
But he said to go into “this level of detail”
and to (focus on the money) took the
investigation to another level.
“Disrupting networks of this sort is
significant,” he said.
“This is really good news for Victorians.”
He said assets worth about $20m has
already been seized, and that police “will
always follow the money”.
The raids covered properties in the
Dandenong, Melton and Footscray areas,
as well as regional Horsham, Geelong,
Ballarat and Warrnambool.

value of several million dollars.
Sir Ken said Operation Entity was a
two-year strategy involving international
connections into organized crime that
produced and trafficked high-potency
cannabis and other drugs.
The organized crime group producing
the cannabis had connections to New
Zealand and Vietnam, police Detective
Superintendent Gerry Ryan said.
“This operation has been running for at
least two years. They are well organized,’’
he told reporters.
“We’ve got strong connections back to
Vietnam. We’ve been working with New
Zealand police over that time and we’ve
worked with Vietnamese authorities.
“This will take a number of days to
resolve. We’ll work through the whole
process on a 24-hour basis.’’
Most of the $400 million the crime gang
made went out of Australia, although
some might have come back through the
heroin trade, Det Supt Ryan said.
“Victoria Police was following the money
trail. This has been very, very successful
for us,’’ he said.
“We’ll continue not only to seize the
drugs, but we’ll continue to seize assets
throughout the day and later on in the
week we’ll apply to the courts for seizure
of quite a number of assets across the
whole state.’’
He described this morning’s drug raids as
probably the biggest in Victoria’s history.
Police were ready to begin the raids
weeks ago but had been delayed because
of US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s
visit to Melbourne.
Shocked neighbours told how they had
no idea of the drug activity happening
nearby.

her house to see police in the street.
Police also attended homes in Greens Rd,

Effects of child abuse and neglect
Core feelings of being “worthless” or
“damaged.” If you’ve been told over and
over again as a child that you are stupid
or no good, it is very difficult to overcome
these core feelings. You may experience
them as reality. Adults may not strive for
more education, or settle for a job that may
not pay enough, because they don’t believe
they can do it or are worth more. Sexual
abuse survivors, with the stigma and shame
surrounding the abuse, often especially
struggle with a feeling of being damaged.
•Trouble regulating emotions. Abused
children cannot express emotions safely. As a
result, the emotions get stuffed down, coming
out in unexpected ways. Adult survivors of
child abuse can struggle with unexplained
anxiety, depression, or anger. They may turn
to alcohol or drugs to numb out the painful
feelings.
Types of child abuse
There are several types of child abuse, but
the core element that ties them together is the
emotional effect on the child. Children need
predictability, structure, clear boundaries,
and the knowledge that their parents are
looking out for their safety. Abused children
cannot predict how their parents will act.
Their world is an unpredictable, frightening
place with no rules. Whether the abuse is a
slap, a harsh comment, stony silence, or not
knowing if there will be dinner on the table
tonight, the end result is a child that feel
unsafe, uncared for, and alone.
Emotional child abuse
Sticks and stones may break my bones but
words will never hurt me? Contrary to this
old saying, emotional abuse can severely
damage a child’s mental health or social
development, leaving lifelong psychological
scars. Examples of emotional child abuse
include:
•Constant belittling, shaming, and
humiliating a child
•Calling names and making negative
comparisons to others
•Telling a child he or she is “no good,”
“worthless,” “bad,” or “a mistake.”
•Frequent yelling, threatening, or bullying. •
Ignoring or rejecting a child as punishment,
giving him or her the silent treatment.
• Limited physical contact with the child—
no hugs, kisses, or other signs of affection.
•Exposing the child to violence or the abuse
of others, whether it be the abuse of a parent,
a sibling, or even a pet.
Child neglect
Child neglect—a very common type of
child abuse—is a pattern of failing to
provide for a child’s basic needs, whether
it be adequate food, clothing, hygiene, or
supervision. Child neglect is not always easy
to spot. Sometimes, a parent might become
physically or mentally unable to care for a
child, such as with a serious injury, untreated
depression, or anxiety. Other times, alcohol
or drug abuse may seriously impair judgment
and the ability to keep a child safe.
Older children might not show outward
signs of neglect, becoming used to
presenting a competent face to the outside
world, and even taking on the role of the
parent. But at the end of the day, neglected
children are not getting their physical and
emotional needs met.

Local tech firm caught up

in US insider-trading probe

Sierra Wireless says “it has become
aware” of charges that a US networking
expert communicated insider information
he received from an employee of the
Richmond based maker of wireless
modems.
A statement from the company doesn’t
say if the employee is still with the firm,
but says the person is not a director or
officer. Sierra Wireless says it “intends to
cooperate fully” with the investigation.
US networking expert Don Chu was
arrested on charges he arranged for insiders
at publicly traded companies to improperly
provide information to hedge fund clients
of the consulting firm where he worked.

lights sold in stores over the last month,

a full refund. The recall was issued
after complaints that many of the lights
