GRAMMAR
This conversation introduces the method in which one can construct dates. To do this, the
Chinese character-based Korean numbers must be used.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Grammar Point #1 - Chinese character-based Numbers - 일, 이, 삼, 사
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Korean has two sets of numbers. The Chinese character-based Korean number system is a
number system which is derived from Chinese. These numbers are typically used for reciting
phone numbers, time (minutes), months, years, counting money, and a number of other
things. With the numbers one through ten, one can count till 99. But in the context of this
lesson, only the numbers one through ten will be necessary to construct dates.
일 (il) - 1
이 (i) - 2
삼 (sam) - 3
사 (sa) - 4
오 (o) - 5
육 (yuk) - 6
칠 (chil) - 7
팔 (pal) - 8
구 (gu) - 9
십 (sip) - 10 십일 (sibil) - 11 십이 (sibi) - 12
-----------------------------
The number 12 is formed by saying the number 10 and then saying the number 2.
10 - 십 (sip)
2 - 이 (i)
10 + 2 = 12
sip + i = sip-i
The number 20 is formed by saying the number 2 and then saying the number 10.
2 - 이 (i)
10 - 십 (sip)
2 x 10 = 20
i x sip = i-sip
Months - Months of the year are constructed by using the number of the month (January - 1,
February - 2, March - 3), using the Sino-Korean numbers. After the number, it is immediately
followed by 월 (wol, month).
1월 (ilwol) - January
Note: The months June and October have different pronunciations as what their respective
numbers 6, 육 (yuk), and 10, 십 (sip), may suggest. 6월 should be pronounced as 유월 (yuwol)
not 육월 (yukwol). 10월 should be pronounced as 시월 (si-wol) not 십월 (sip-wol).
Dates - Dates of the year are constructed in the same exact manner as months are. Using the
Sino-Korean number for the date, the number is then immediately following with the word 일
(il, day).
1일 (ilil) - 1st
3일 (samil) - 3rd
7일 (chilil) - 7th
14일 (sibsail) - 14th
29일 (isibguil) - 29th
31일 (samsibilil) - 31st

♣ More Examples ♣
---------------------------
Here are a few example dates in Korean:
------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Phrase #1 - What's Today's Date? - 며칠이에요?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The phrase 며칠이에요? (myeochil-ieyo?) is used to ask the date. It is spelled 며칠이에요?
(myeo-chil-ieyo?) but is commonly misspelled as 몇일이에요? (myeoch-il-ieyo?)
---------------------------
♣ More Examples ♣
---------------------------
오늘 며칠이에요? (oneul myeochil-ieyo?) - What date is it today?
내일 며칠이에요? (naeil myeochil-ieyo?) - What date it it tomorrow?
결혼식이 며칠이에요? (gyeolhonsik-i myeochil-ieyo?) - What date is the wedding?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Phrase #2 - When is Your Birthday? - 생일이 언제예요?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The phrase 생일이 언제예요? (saengil-i eonje-yeoyo?) is used to ask someone when their
birthday is. As the subject of the sentence is not included, it is usually inferred from context. If
one wanted to be more specific, the name of the person could simply be added onto the front
of the phrase.
---------------------------
♣ More Examples ♣
---------------------------
류지 생일이 언제예요? (ryuji saengil-i eonje-yeyo?) - 'When is Ryuji's birthday?' or 'When is
