Wellness Medium and Your Wellness Plan

1. What medium have you chosen? Please describe and/or attach/upload visual.

I have chosen to do painting as my medium. These pictures are variations of the view off my
grandparent’s dock in Wisconsin.

2. What does this medium represent to you? Why? Please describe why this is meaningful.

I have always loved art and painting, especially of nature. I think paintings have a way of
capturing a stillness found in nature in a surreal way. I don’t know when I began to paint
for fun, but I have found that I tend to paint in college when I am stressed and need a sort
of “brain break”. Painting also allows me to engage the creative part of my brain, which I
do not always get to do in school. It is relaxing to me to mix colors, and that there really
is not a way to make mistakes, which is a relief because of how strict school and clinical
can be. Many times, I have painted something in the wrong spot or with a color that I did
not actually want, and it ends up enhancing the painting.

I usually paint pictures of nature and often times of my grandparent’s lake house in
Wisconsin like the picture above. I have been traveling there every summer since I was a
baby. I have some of my happiest memories with friends and family while spending the
summer on the lake. One of my favorite times of day is sunset because of the way the
light reflects on the water from my dock. No two sunsets look the same (as you can see
from the pictures), so each night is special. The image above reminds me of my family
and happy times. I want to commit to painting more this semester because it makes me
feel calm and almost fills me with nostalgia. It allows me to be mindful and live in the
moment, rather than worrying about deadlines and assignments. I am graduating and
things will be changing within a few months. I might not be able to go back to Wisconsin
like I’m used to. However, painting places that are familiar or beautiful to me fills me
with happiness and I feel like it will help calm me during this transition.

specific.

I commit to finding time to paint any style, any landscape as long as it speaks to me. I
commit to painting at least twice per month and not just when I feel stressed. I commit to
sharing painting with others, whether that be painting with them or giving my paintings
to them.
