SportsAid Athlete Performance Update November 2008

Commonwealth Youth Games – Pune, India, August 2008

England medals: 18 Gold, 9 Silver, 22 Bronze of which SportsAid supported athletes won 10
Gold, 5 Silver, 7 Bronze.
53% of medals won by Team England at the Commonwealth Youth Games have been won
by athletes supported by SportsAid.

Commonwealth Youth Games highlights:

 Ben Watson, 18, Weightlifting, Didcot in Oxfordshire


Carried the Team England flag at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Youth
Games. He captained the British team at the European Youth Weightlifting Championships
in 2007 and is the British 77kg champion.

 Abigail Irozuru,18, Long Jump, Rhodes in Lancashire, ASDA:


Abigail recently returned from Pune, India having achieved a Gold medal at the 3rd
Commonwealth Youth Games. “I believe that this is really encouraging and a great platform
to propel me into 2010 in Delhi for the actual Commonwealth Games”.

 Zoe Smith: 14, Weightlifting, London, Girdler’s:


Competed at the Brunel Cup in 58kg category and lifted all 6 lifts to gain 15 new British
records with a snatch of 72 kgs; clean and jerk of 90 kgs and a total of 162 kgs to reset the
British U18, U17, U16, U15 and U14 records. At the European Youth U17 Weightlifting

Championships she won the Silver in the clean and jerk. Won the Commonwealth
Youth Games title; youngest competitor in her event and member of Team England
at just 14. As well as the Commonwealth records she also broke the Senior British snatch
and totals records.

 James Wilkinson, 18, Middle distance runner, Leeds: Gaz de France


"Grant enabled me to receive regular physiotherapy sessions which have helped to stay
injury free. The funding has undoubtedly helped contribute to my success and I am most
grateful."
English Schools Athletics Championships (July) Senior Boys 2000m Steeplechase 1st.
3,000m U20 Steeplechase Championship winner and North of England 2,000m
Steeplechase winner. Ranked No1 for 2,000m & 3,000m steeplechase in age group.

 Calum Heath, 12, Waterski, Deal in Kent:


Competed in the British Youth Nationals in September where he won Gold in the U12 slalom
and Silver in U12 trick skiing. “Calum does not receive any other funding so your support
means a great deal him.”

 Christopher Scott, 20, Athletics – Throws, Binscombe in Surrey:


“2008 was his first year as a Senior discus thrower and it proved to be a successful one.
Won the U23 National Championships, competed at the Olympic trials and represented
England in an International competition in Croatia winning Bronze. Chris ended the season
top of the Under 23 discus rankings and 11th in the Senior rankings.
“The SportsAid grant allowed me to travel to competitions all over the country, several of
which required an overnight stay, and to train effectively.”

 Craig Moate, 23, Disability Swimming, Barking in Essex:


In August Craig took part in the European Championships for people with Learning Disability
held in Poland where he won 6 Gold’s and a Bronze. An Open Championships was also held
to include swimmers from the rest of the world and Craig won 3 Gold medals in the 200m
butterfly, 400m and 1,500m freestyle.

 Oliver Loughhead, 15, Sailing, Orlock in County Down:


He began the season winning the RYA(NI) radial fleet and became RYANI Youth Champion.
3rd at the Munster Championships in Baltimore. Next came the Europa Cup in Germany
finished 10th overall out of 150 and 1st U17, he finished 2nd in the Ulster Championships
(1st Junior) and at the European Youth Championship in Douarenez, France he finished
10th overall and 2nd U17. The UK Nationals he was 3rd overall, 1st U17 and 1st Irish boat.

 George Lee, 13, TaeKwonDo, Lewisham in London, ASDA:


British Championships selections at Manchester Velodrome on 7th September in the U53kg
cadet category won the Gold medal making him no1 in Great Britain for the second year
running.

 Joshua Radvan, 16, Modern Pentathlon, Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire:


European U17 Biathle Championships in August (continuous run-open water swim- run
event) won the European title. World U17 Biathle Championships in South Africa - 1st
November - one of three athletes given the honour of carrying the GB flag at the opening
party. Josh won the Gold medal, passing the world No1 in a sprint finish. Gold in the
National U17 National Pentathlon Championships (also winning gold medals for the run, the
fence, the swim and the ride).

 James Ellington, 23, Sprinter, Lewisham in London, Lloyds TSB:


"Sport can be lonely so when someone comes along and believes in you enough to give you
£1,000 it makes you realise you will make it after all."

 Kelly Kay, 15, Wrestling, Bolton, Norwich Union:


This year Kelly has won the British Championship (6 years on the trot 57kg weight category),
the English Championship and the Derbyshire Regional Championships in October.

 Sebastian de Verteuil: 14, Aerobic Gymnastics, Camberley in Surrey, Tuixen:


Gold medal in the British Open Championships. He was also presented with the prestigious
award of "Gymnast of the Year", for being the most outstanding gymnast for the 2007/2008
season.

 Michael Pope: 14, Disability Athletics - Multi Event, St Albans in Hertfordshire,


Jeremy Wilson Charitable Trust:
Norwich Union National Junior Games, Stoke Mandeville in October; Javelin – Gold, Discus
- Silver, Shot put - Bronze, Table Tennis – Silver, Zone Hockey - Bronze. Michael was
awarded the "2008 Service to Sport Award for Contribution to Disability Sport" through the
Herts Sports Partnership.

 Chloe Jackson, 15, Judo, Rainham in Essex, Arup:


At the British U20 Championships in October Chloe took a silver medal despite breaking her
wrist in the final.

 Jamie van Hooijdonk, 17, Badminton, Swansea, OCS:


Jamie is the under-18 British and under-19 Welsh champion. He toured China as part of
Team Europe 2012 — a group of 21 players from across Europe earmarked as potential
stars of the London Olympics.

 Kirsty Linnett, 15, Football, Wigston in Leicestershire, Lloyds TSB:


Kirsty was a member of the England team that came 4th at this month’s U17 World Cup in
New Zealand.

 Amy-Louise Thompson, 15, Judo, Enfield in Middlesex


At the Heart of England Championships in September she fought at U52kg (up a weight
category) and won Silver. On the 12th of October Amy-Louise went to Sheffield to fight in
The British Championships and took Gold U48kg.

 Emily Whitlock, 14, Squash, Colwyn Bay in Wales, ASDA:


Competed at the Tecnifibre British Junior Championships on 23rd October. She is still only
14 but reached the final beating the England U17 No1 and Wales U17 No1on the way. In the
final, she played the No2 seed but unfortunately didn't have quite enough petrol left in the
tank. The age difference was just a little too much and the strength and power of her
opponent was telling on the day.

 Matthew Johnson, 13, Swimming, Dewsbury in West Yorkshire:


He has broken 12 British Age Group records this year. At the British Age Group National
Championships (ASA) in Sheffield in July he entered 10 events and won 10 Gold medals. He
competed in 24 races over the 4 days in freestyle, breaststroke, fly, back & IM.

 Zoe Coggins, 15, Archery, Sunderland, Lloyds TSB:


In October Zoe shot an unofficial national record at the Green Lane 18m Tournament
winning the Junior Lady competition and was only 2 points from senior winner.
In the Archery Society Northern County Indoor Championships earlier this month Zoe was
joint 1st in her age group and overall - shooting 569.
She is Junior GB U18 No2, Senior 29 and has been selected to shoot for England at the
Junior National Indoor Championships at Lilleshall on 7th December.

UK School Games – SportsAid athlete highlights:

 Alex Boxall, 15, Hockey, Cambridgeshire:


City of Peterborough star Alex helped England win the UK School Games Gold medal at
Bath and Bristol. He scored twice as England beat Wales 4-0, Scotland 2-0 and Ulster 3-1 in
the U18 competition. He will also be part of the England Hockey National Performance
Centre program based from Loughborough.

 Jack Pegram, 17, Table Tennis, Watford:


At the UK School Games in August Jack was asked on stage with Rebecca Adlington at the
opening ceremony representing all the athletes from England to open the Games. He won
the Gold for wheelchair table tennis, retaining his title from last year.

 Richie Dawson-Smith, 18, Hockey, Altringham in Cheshire, Lloyds TSB:


Part of the UK School Games winning team, now selected for Great Britain U21's and
England U21's. “I would like to say how much my grant has helped this year, I have used it
on membership fees, equipment and travel cost predominantly.”

 Grace O’Connell, 16, Fencing, Brentwood in Essex:


Grace won the Women's Sabre event at the UK School Games. She represented Northern
Ireland and this was the first Gold medal that NIR have won in fencing since the UKSG
started. At the start of October she also won the Women's Sabre event at the British
National U20 Championships despite only being 16 years of age.
