ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to find out the effects of having a broken family on the
academic performance of some Kapalong National High School students. Two purposes
and three research questions were formulated to guide the study. The population of the
study consists of all the students of KNHS who came from broken families. Through the
process of simple random sampling a total number of 20 students were have
volunteered to participate in the study. The major instrument used for collecting data
was a questionnaire. The data collected were analyzed through the use of simple
percentages. On the basis of such findings, recommendations were made that the
government should create academic and counsel units in different schools with
adequate funds where students from broken homes would be given proper guidance
and counseling concerning their psychological and social problems.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION
DEFINITION OF THE STUDY

Broken home occurs as an effect of separation of marriage either by death or

divorce. Broken home, contributed a lot to anti-social behavior society.  Most of them
were very unsuccessful because of house separation, (ISAKE ,1963).

The struggles of broken families are universal phenomena which affect both
developed as well as the underdeveloped country. Yet the effects still persist with
varying degrees in different parts of the world.

The rate of broken homes is increasing unprecedentedly, and it is necessary for the

psychologist and teacher to find out the relationship between houses and academic
achievement of the concerned children.

Slowed academic development is another common way that a broken home
affects children. The emotional stress of a broken home alone can be enough to stunt
your child’s academic progress, but the lifestyle changes and instability of a broken
family can contribute to poor educational outcomes. This poor academic progress can
stem from a number of factors, including instability in the home environment,
inadequate financial resources and inconsistent routines.

On a global aspect, Yusuf (1981), revealed that 60 – 70% of backward students of
primary Schools in Jere Government Area, are those children from broken homes, some
of them are rerunning errant, while some of them do not have adequate school material
that will help them study.

Otherwise, they are frustrated and psychologically disturbed in their classes. As

a result, they could not focus and do well in the school activities.

Nationally speaking, the number of marriage annulment cases in the Philippines

has increased by 40 percent in the last decade with at least 22 cases added every day,
according to a report by the Catholic bishops’ news agency (Tubeza, 2011). With the
growth of such cases relating to separated parents, effects adjudged students into
becoming immune to struggles upon their emotional, mental and psychological stability
causes them to be much more exposed to the world they are not yet ready to venture in.
It exhibits factors besides parental severance have an impact on children’s adjustment
and behaviors. Ending a relationship can be traumatic, chaotic, and filled with
contradictory emotions especially when it comes to parents’ separation. Clinicians and
Therapists note that the children caught in the middle of the parents’ animosity during
separation have attention and concentration problems, academic problems, anger issues
and even sleep disorders.

On a local perspective, Juenalyn Pablo, social work associate and head of

QRTCC-CSSDO, said Thursday, October 5 that they also tallied two cases of deaths due
to child abuse since the city launched the Kean Gabriel Hotline in October last year.
Most of the child abuses happen to parents having marital conflict, and broken families.
She also mentioned that physical abuse has the highest number of reported cases
compared to other form of abuses such as sexual abuse, neglect, and others.

RESEARCH GAP

The study was conducted to explore the effects of Broken home to the students
of Kapalong National High School. It is believed that poor academic development can
stem from a number of factors, including shakiness in the home environment,
inadequate financial resources and inconsistent routines. This is to know if it affects the
behavior and performance of the students in their classes. Otherwise, this is a research
to find the other step that we can look for the solution of broken family. To remarry,
coping with the problem is a must. Let the parent started to use their strength to cope
with the difficulties in the family, the children will follow.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

Broken home is one of the factors that can affect the academic performance of a
child at schools. It has been argued that broken homes have an adverse effect on the
educational outcome of the child by affecting his attitude in school. Therefore, the
purpose of this study is to determine the number of students from broken home and to
assess the impact of broken homes on students' academic performance at Kapalong
NHS.

REASEARCH QUESTIONS

1. Does lack of parental care, love and discipline affect students’ academic
achievement in school?
2. How does broken homes affect children?
3. What are the impacts of broken home on the academic achievement of students?

THEORITICAL LENS

The scope and nature of broken home became a central part of many human
personality theories and basis of numerous programmes in education. Attempts,
therefore, have been made to know what is broken home and late its nature and scope.

According to Homeby (1970), broken home is a home in which the parents are
separated or divorced or are no more together as a result of death. Children from such
homes lack proper care and security.

In the same way Udru (1978), define a broken home mean a house in which the
parental are no more living together. Other researchers study carry out on broken
homes seem to agree that broken home are associated with increase aggressive and
Juvenile delinquency in children.
LOVELL (1973), opened that families spite by death, desertion, divorce or
prolong absence.

In assessing the above definition such as a situation (broken home can result to
poor academic achievement in primary schools as once child misses such opportunities
of guide, securities affection and assistant where necessary.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

The researchers have been able to solve this research problem by closely
examining the causes of broken homes and its effects on the academic performance of
children in KNHS.

The data were gathered using questionnaire method. The questioning was
performed on the convenience of the students. The respondents will be chosen
according to the referrals of the previous respondent. It is also limited because of the
sensitiveness and confidentiality of our respondents.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The rate of marriage failure is on the increase in our modern society. Therefore, it
is important that a timely study be carried out in order to give useful suggestions and
recommendations.

Teachers. The teachers will be able to find ways on how to help such unfortunate
children to learn properly in school so that they can come out with a good academic
performance in school for themselves and be useful to the society as well.

Policy makers. The policy makers will be able to help make policies that will
cover students in this situation so that future dreams could be achieved.

framed to guide the researcher.
