FAIR Plan Part I
Who Is Derek
Derek is one of the oldest students in or class. He is 10 years old. Derek is one of the
most athletic kids I have ever been around. He is being recruited for junior level teams
for basketball but he is only 10 years old and kids who are on those teams are usually
14. He is also extremely good at football. His football team just won the championship
for his league and he plays the quarterback and the safety. At recess he plays sports
Derek is very sweet. For example, at the beginning of the year he asked if he could take
a picture with his teachers so he could show his parents. The next day we joked and
said that he should show his friend after school and he smiled and took out his phone
so he could show his friends. He loves when you work one on one with him and if you
sit down and give him the attention that he wants he will work well with you and finish
his work. Derek is very outgoing as well. He is a funny student who wants to make his
Derek is strong in all his academic areas. He knows his multiplication facts really well.
If you ask him what 8x9 is he can give you an answer in a few seconds. He is grade
level when it comes to reading as well. He enjoys writing creative stories especially if
Behavior
The challenging behavior that I was focusing on is the student getting angry and
walking away from the expected activity. The child was consistent with showing that
the was aggravated. He has a distinct behavior that he exhibits when there is something
that he does not agree with. The student does not say a lot when he is angry. If there is
something that is not going his way, he shows that he is frustrated. For example, when
he came into the room and was informed that he was not going to be able to pick the
seat that he wanted. He threw his hands in the air, said “I never get the chair that I
want” and stormed over to the couch that is in the classroom library. He stayed on the
couch for 10 minutes before the teacher and him came to an agreement he felt made the
A different example that was recorded in the data is when he was not being given
attention during math. The second that Ms. Berna looks away to help a different student
he gets up and walks around rather than continuing working. When he is asked to return
he gets angry. He will roll his eyes and walk away or out of the room.
The place that this behavior was exhibited was in the classroom when all of the teachers
and students were there. We were in the classroom for all but one behavior. All of the
behaviors had all the students in the classroom or setting that he was in at the time. Only
two behaviors had only me in the room and all of the others had all three co-teachers in
the room.
What typically happened before the behavior was the teacher was giving a different
student attention or the student found out that he could not get the chair that he wanted.
What typically happened after the behavior occurred was discipline coming from Ms.
Berna. This is a protocol in our classroom since Derek has been producing challenging
behavior. The school has seen patterns in students having a tough transition into a co-
taught classroom since there are three teachers in the classroom and behavior does not
go unnoticed which can be hard for students who have only had one teacher in the room
for most of their school career. Most of the interactions after the behavior were not
harsh but just a stern sentence that clearly stated that what he was doing was not the
expectation and he should go and do the expected activity. The child ignored the first
direction every time. The consequence for the student’s actions are to lose a Class Dojo
point which is something that the students work towards throughout the day. .
Patterns
One pattern I do see is that all of the behaviors happened when the student was in the
classroom with all of the students. All of the teachers were present in the recorded
behaviors as well except for two. Two of the behaviors were due to the student not
being able to get his preferred seat for the day. Most of the behaviors that were recorded
happened either at the beginning of the day, math, or the end of the day.
Hypothesis
Thinking about the behavior that the child was exhibiting I think that the student is
communicating a few things. One of the things that he is communicating is that he wants to
have attention from a teacher during a time where he may not be getting his way. During his
behavior that he was showing because of not being able to have a chair that he wanted he got
angry and did not come back to the class activity until a teacher had talked to him and calmed
him down. When the child was getting up and angry after the teacher was giving her attention
to a different student the child seemed to be communicating that he wanted the teacher’s
attention.
Positive Behaviors
I want to see the child develop skills to be able to cope with things not going his way as well as
be able to see his teacher helping other students and understand that he will work on his work
and the teacher will check back in with him when she is done helping others.
