Self-Reflection on Micro Lesson

Teaching Our CHOPS List

For my micro lesson I decided to teach about the CHOPS list that my classroom used for

their writing. The CHOPS list stands for capital letters, handwriting, oral reading, punctuation,

and spelling. This was on a laminated sheet so that the students could look back at it before they

brought their writing to the editor’s office.

I thought that my lesson went really well. I started by discussing acronyms, which was an

important piece of understanding what CHOPS means. I did this so they could understand what

CHOPS means. After talking about acronyms we discussed capital letters and punctuation. We

talked about how capital letters need to be used at the beginning of a sentence and when you are

talking about places like Massachusetts or The United States. I was able to include the group by

asking them when capital letters should be used when they are writing. I also included the group

by asking for examples when to use exclamation points and periods, which kept the group

engaged and recalling information that was important for this lesson and their future writing.

After we talked about capital letters and punctuation, I asked the students to give me a thumbs up

if they understood or to give me a thumbs down if they wanted to talk a little more about both

capital letters and punctuation. All of the group members gave me a thumbs up so we moved on

to talk about our CHOPS list. We went through each letter of CHOPS talking about what is

expected when they are on that part of the checklist. I gave them examples for each part so they

knew what they were doing when they were going through the list. At the end of the lesson, I

asked if the students had any questions, which they didn’t, so the lesson was over. One thing that

I would do differently would be to include more group check ins during the lesson when going
through each letter of CHOPS. I felt like there was a lot of just me talking to the group rather

than including them. Other than that, I feel confident about the lesson and the way that I taught

it.
