Week 11/Week 12 Assignment

Creating a gig poster

Supplement to notes explaining why/what a poster is

Design a poster for a live appearance by the band/artist CROW.

It’s a fictitious band – they don’t exist, but this might duplicate a real-life scenario where you are asked to work with an
artist you’ve never heard of, or are not really familiar with. You would still have to do the job! You can’t sit back and say
‘I’m not doing it – I don’t like them’. In this case, you can make the artist whoever you like, whatever style of music you
like, whatever genre. The style of art you create might indicate to me what genre you have decided to make them.

Many artists typically do not use photographs of themselves for promotion in a situation like this as that is not an essential
part of their image. You CAN use a photograph of an artist, if you like – you can use any artist you like and call them
CROW – but as per any number of examples I am providing you, or which you can look up, a photo is not at all essential.
Some prefer to use very graphic treatments representational of their music. Pick art that transmits a mood, or a sense of
excitement that might make me interested in going to this imaginary show.

- Create a new document - poster must be 11x17 inches.

- Low-res - 72 pixels per inch (I don’t want any huge files, so I’m asking you to do this as a lo-res file. We would normally
do this at 300 pixels per inch).
- Can be either Photoshop doc or Illustrator doc, whichever you feel more comfortable with. You might need to use both,
of course. Photoshop version would be supplied as a JPG. Illustrator version would be supplied as a PDF
- Poster must include reference to this being part of ‘A MURDER OF CROWS North American tour’. (A ‘murder of crows’
is the term for a flock of crows or group of crows together. You didn’t know that, didya?). Many bands on tour title their
tour like this. It’s NOT THE MOST IMPORTANT INFORMATION in the visual hieracrchy.
- Must include the date: June 20th, 2016
- Must include the venue: The Opera House, Toronto
- Must include the support act: The Wooly Mammoths
Poster must also include record company logo, King Pizza Records, and website address: murderofcrows.com
(Record company logo can be found on line – you will need to convert it to a bitmap TIF, just like we did for the Gibson
project we did, and for other projects: IMAGE > MODE > GRAYSACLE then IMAGE > MODE > BITMAP >
50%THRESHOLD METHOD

- technical execution of image and type
- originality/creativity in executing the brief
- clear sense of visual hierarchy involved in design
