INVISIBLE LASER RADIATION
AVOID DIRECT EXPOSURE 980/1480/1550nm
TO BEAM Class 1M LASER PRODUCT

Before handling the amplifier equipment, carefully read the information below. It is important
that the operators should practice basic laser safety precautions at all time. If you have any
questions about the safety features of this equipment, contact with us. We would not be
responsible for any damage due to not agree with the safety instructions.

The output signals of the pump laser and EDFA are not visible. The high power level of these
devices is sufficient to cause damage to the eyes or skin. Do not look directly at the input or
output fiber cross-section without using approved eye-safety equipment. Do not permit the input
or output fibers (with or without connectors) to be aimed directly at any part of the body as
serious burns may result.

This amplifier should be operated in accordance with the applicable government regulations for
Class 1M devices.

Do not open the amplifier. There are no user-maintainable or user-serviceable parts inside the
housing.

INTRODUCTION
General
The HFA series has been designed for fiber optical transmission , FTTx and PON access
systems. The amplifier provides up to 37dBm of output power with excellent noise figure
performance. It combines high performance EDFA and a friendly interface. The unit can be
configured through the front panel keys. According to the Customer request, we also provide
multiple communication interfaces, such as web/telnet and RS-232.
Optical
For CATV optical signal amplification, performance has been optimized for low noise figure over
a large input power range by careful selection of both passive and active components. The
amplifier consists of optically pumped Er doped fiber using high reliability 980 nm pump laser
and Er-Yb co-doped fiber using multimode pump laser diodes. Input and output ports are
optically isolated to maintain stable operation of the amplifier module in system applications.
In amplifier, PON signals are multiplexed with CATV optical signal through the WDM array.

Start
Once all the connections have been made to the amplifier (see Installation), the unit can be
operated following the instructions below:
1. Confirm that all fiber connections are correct.
2. Verify that the power cord is properly connected to the amplifier.
3. Turn on the power to the amplifier on the rear front panel.
At the time of turning on the power of the EDFA, After a few seconds of self-testing, the unit’s
LCD Display should indicate serial number of the unit. And all the LED alarm indictors should be
off in several seconds.

Output power turning (not recommended)

In some cases users may need to change the output CATV power a little bit for the calibration
reason, make sure you have a standard power meter and carefully clean the reference output
fiber end, you can change the output power level setting through the sequence below:
 Scroll to “Output Power” parameter of HFA on LCD
 Press “Next” and “Set” buttons simultaneously, the “Output Power” will shining on LCD

6
 Press “Prev” button for decrease, while “Next” button for increase the output power
0.1dB each step, then press “Set” button for change setting
 If you don’t want to change the APC level, just press “Set” button for exit
Be very careful not to increase the total output power above the limit for the product,
generally 0.2 to 0.3dB higher than the deliver setting, otherwise the amplifier maybe
overload, you might decrease the life time or even damage the amplifier!

MAINTENANCE
Fiber Optic Maintenance
Any time the fiber leads to the amplifier are disconnected, there is potential for contamination of
the ends of the fiber connectors. Dirt or other contaminants on these components can reduce
the amplifier’s performance or result in damage to the system. It is recommended that the fiber
connectors be cleaned each time prior to reconnection to the system.
