EDUC 2301.100
3 March 2020
Teaching Demonstration Lesson Plan
Subject/Grade Level: 3rd Grade Math
Time/Duration: aprox 20 mins
Objectives
Students will be able to define what capacity/volume is, as well as build a representation model
that will help them understand the parts of a gallon and help them compare and estimate
capacity.
Standards/TEKS
TEKS:
§111.5. Grade 3, Adopted 2012.
(a) Introduction.
(4) The primary focal areas in Grade 3 are place value, operations of whole numbers, and
understanding fractional units. These focal areas are supported throughout the mathematical
strands of number and operations, algebraic reasoning, geometry and measurement, and data
analysis. In Grades 3-5, the number set is limited to positive rational numbers. In number and
operations, students will focus on applying place value, comparing and ordering whole numbers,
connecting multiplication and division, and understanding and representing fractions as numbers
and equivalent fractions. In algebraic reasoning, students will use multiple representations of
problem situations, determine missing values in number sentences, and represent real-world
relationships using number pairs in a table and verbal descriptions. In geometry and
measurement, students will identify and classify two-dimensional figures according to common
attributes, decompose composite figures formed by rectangles to determine area, determine the
perimeter of polygons, solve problems involving time, and measure liquid volume (capacity) or
weight. In data analysis, students will represent and interpret data.
(7) Geometry and measurement. The student applies mathematical process standards to select
appropriate units, strategies, and tools to solve problems involving customary and metric
measurement. The student is expected to:
(E) determine liquid volume (capacity) or weight using appropriate units and tools.

Anticipatory Set
Introduce “Galactic Gallon.” Share with students how I made a gallon man when I was in 3rd
grade and throughout my life I can still remember parts to a gallon by “body parts.”

a)Teaching: Input/Mini Lesson

Show educational video to students https://www.funbrain.com/videos/umigo/a-cup-fills-up
Review over video by asking questions to make sure students were paying attention.

b)Teaching: Modeling
-pass out baggies of pre-cut and labeled paper, gallon jugs, markers and tape
-have students open baggies and ***go over comparing pre-cut paper with them
-have students draw a face on gallon jug
-show students how to break down a gallon, building their own gallon man

c)Teaching: Checking for Understanding

-review over break down of a gallon by asking examples(2 cups=???)
-ask if a cup of something could fit in a pen? a backpack? your hand? a pool?

Questioning strategies:
Creative thinking time, have students write a short story, poem or even a jingle, at least a few
sentences about their gallon man on the “gallon” paper template I created. This will be hung
outside on the bulletin board in the hall.

Guided Practice
***Do this before building Gallon Man
Ask students to use pre-cut and labeled papers to form comparisons(show me 2 ways to make a
pint, a gallon, 2 cups, a quart).

Closure
As you finish up today I want you to remember your Gallon Man, y ou may use him as a
reference when working on this paper together. If nothing else, remember how he is built in
your head and that will help you when determining equivalents or sizes. You will use capacity
comparing and estimating throughout your life and have already been using it, now you will be
able to recognize it when you do use it.

Independent Practice
Follow up on the lesson will be an Estimating Capacity worksheet, in which students may use
their gallon man to help them. This will be turned in for a grade.
