Criterion B section : Designing and Inquiring

Research question:
What is the maximum amount of Potassium chloride that can be dissolved in 100mL of water
at 20 degrees Celsius?

Hypothesis
Because here we don't have much data to compare we will leave it blank.
But could be something such as: “the amount of KCl dissolved in 100 mL at 20 degree of
water will be more than the one at 0 degree and less than at 100 degree, because the higher
the temperature, the weaken are bonding and therefore easy to interact with water and
dissolve on it”

Variables
Independent variable - amount (mass) of potassium chloride. The quantity of KCl will be
added (therefore changing) until we reach the saturation point.

Dependent variable - Solubility of KCl - The maximum amount of KCl which will be dissolved
completely.

Control Variables - 1. Volume of water always 100 mL (constant) ; Temperature of water

always 20 degrees Celsius (constant); (pressure Constant)

Procedure
1. In the Virtual Lab, change the the temperature (of water) to 20 degrees Celsius;
2. Add gradually the mass of KCl by clicking at the KCl flask and then the spoon (spatula)
with the desired mass.
3. Observe and take notes
4. The mass added can be read in the “Compound added”.
5. You may use the ündo bottom to correct the data, and;
6. After reaching the over saturation point, stop adding the KCl and take note of the mass
before the last addition.

Table 1: Solubility of KCl in 100mL of water at 20 degree Celsius.

Determining the solubility of KCl in 100mL of water at 20 degree Celsius:

Looking at the table above, the maximum of KCl soluble in water is 35 grams, so:

S = m/V

Where: S - solubility
m - mass of the solute in grams (g)
V - volume of solvent in litre (L)

Data: Resolution
m = 35 g S = 35g/0.1L
V = 100mL = 0.1 L S = 350 g/L
S=?

So the solubility of Potassium chloride at 20 degree celsius is 350 g/L

Notice: after this, it is very important to compare the result of the experiment with your
research and Hypothesis and come up with the conclusion of the experiment.
