Introduction
Use this Special Instruction to check the HORIZONTAL and VERTICAL movement of the bearing in the upper
and the lower articulation hitch. Checking the movement of the bearing will reduce the wear of the bearing bore
in the hitch. The articulation hitch should be monitored closely to determine the amount of movement.

Note: Refer to Table ***#i07175784/i06849775.14*** for new machines and machines that have had the
hitch rebuilt. Refer to Table ***#i07175784/i06849775.15*** for machines that have production hours.

Do not perform any procedure that is outlined in this Special Instruction until you have read the document
completely and you understand the information that is contained in the document.
Machine Preparation
1. Fill the bucket with material.

2. Move the machine to a smooth, horizontal location that is away from operating machines and away from
personnel.

3. Lower the bucket to the ground. Keep the material in the bucket.

4. Place the transmission direction control switch in the NEUTRAL position.

5. Engage the parking brake. Place wheel blocks in front of the wheels and behind the wheels.

6. Install the steering frame lock in the LOCKED position.

7. Shut off the engine.

8. Clean the area around the upper articulation hitch and the lower articulation hitch to remove dirt and
debris.

9. Visually inspect the upper articulation hitch for loose bolts or missing bolts. Visually inspect the lower
articulation hitch for loose bolts or missing bolts. Visually inspect the upper and the lower hitch after
every 2000 hours.

Every 1000 Hours Measure the Movement of the Bearing for the
Upper and the Lower Articulation Hitch

Personal injury or death can result from sudden machine movement.

Sudden movement of the machine can cause injury to persons on or

near the machine.
To prevent injury or death, make sure that the area around the machine
is clear of personnel and obstructions before operating the machine.

To prevent personal injury when checks are made while the machine is
in operation, make sure only approved personnel are on the machine.
Keep other personnel off the machine and in view of the operator. Make
sure checks are done in an open area.

The actual measured values for a new hitch and a rebuilt hitch may vary. The actual value of movement is only
the starting point. Monitoring the increase in the bearing wear is the reason for the following procedures. The
bearings should be replaced when excessive movement is detected. Not replacing the bearings could result in
expensive reboring of the machine frames.

Refer to Tables 2 and 3 for the maximum movement of the bearing. The bearing should be changed before the
maximum movement of the bearing occurs.

Checking VERTICAL Movement of the Top Joint
(1) Magnetic base. (2) Electronic position indicator.

1. Locate electronic position indicator (2) with magnetic base (1) on the front frame to measure the
VERTICAL movement of the top joint. Refer to Illustration 2.

2. Start the engine.

3. Raise the loaded bucket off the ground. Set electronic position indicator (2) to zero.

4. Lower the bucket until the bucket touches the ground. Use the LIFT hydraulics to raise the front of the
machine until the front wheels are off the ground. Read electronic position indicator (2). Record the
measurement.

5. Repeat Steps 3 through 4 to verify the measurement.

6. Relocate electronic position indicator (2) with magnetic base (1) on the front frame to measure the
HORIZONTAL movement of the top joint. Refer to Illustration 3.

7. Raise the loaded bucket off the ground. Set electronic position indicator (2) to zero.
8. Lower the bucket until the bucket touches the ground. Use the LIFT hydraulics to raise the front of the
machine until the front wheels are off the ground. Read electronic position indicator (2). Record the
measurement.

9. Repeat Steps 7 through 8 to verify the measurement.
