Negative Impact of Online Gaming

1.0. Abstract

Video gaming is a complete industry that started functioning in the early 40’s. Initially the video games
were made for installing on PC’s and the nature of game was mathematical
quizzes. Later some popular game developers introduced Star war games for
the thrill lovers. At the beginning these games can be played alone but latest
technological transformations opened the gaming industry for multiplayers.

With the advent of IT in every field of life, gaming industry has reached its
peak and the game developers are earing huge revenues from developing
new games each year. Many games earn more than $500 million with in the
first week of their launching and game developers are making every effort to
make their games so attractive that they can never be ignored by the
players. For this purpose some game developers are making their games
popular by any means either hook or crook. Their basic aim is to earn great
profits and they never take interest in how these online games are affecting
the players.

The question that arises is that why these online games are making people
addicted to them. What are the forces that make a gamer to become crazy
for them? Different researches and surveys conducted by different scholars

4
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

proved that the desire for earning fame and a gut feeling for achievement
makes a man addicted to online gaming. Accepting challenges is always a
human instinct and in order to satisfy this instinct, a person gets crazy for
accomplishing the tasks assigned to him.

Some researchers connected the online gaming addiction as a medical

disorder while others take it as a psychological illness. This online gaming is
affecting the general health and life of teenagers to a greater extent. The
online gaming addicts get isolated from society and like to hide themselves
from the eyes of friends and family. Online gaming addiction is considered
more horrifying than drugs and alcohol addiction because drugs and alcohol
are termed as addiction while many scholars do not distinguish online
gaming as an addiction so they never propose any clinical or psychological
treatment for this addiction.

Different surveys are conducted to complete this research paper and

references form genuine research papers are taken to make this paper more
reliable and authentic. At the end we will propose certain treatments to get
rid of this online gaming addiction.

Research Problem
Background
Online gaming is still more of a mystery and cannot be still
categorized as a genuine addiction. While some clinical specialists
consider it as a compulsive behavior disorder that exploits the life of
the addict in multiple ways.
The basic question to be answered is why online gaming is
becoming an addiction for the players. What are the consequences
or conditions that drive a player crazy towards game? For those
players who spend more than 5 continuous hours in playing are
supposed to be on the border of getting addicted to gaming.

6
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

1.1.4. Theoretical Frame work

Online gaming habits is never something that should be neglected
by the parents rather they should keep a conscious eye on the daily
online activities of their children because different viral online
games like ‘Blue Whale’ are opening options of committing suicides
for their children.
Any kind of change in the regular activities, habits and attitude of
the teenagers should be strictly checked if the parents want their
children to be protected against any kind of online gaming
addiction. Behavioral changes and isolation from family gatherings
and society are the open signs of children getting involved with
some kind of addiction.
As an instantaneous response, an online gaming addict should be
immediately taken under medical care and psychological sessions
from some reputed psychtrists is very necessary for bringing back
the addict to a healthy life.

3.0. History of Online Gaming

When we talk about the history of online gaming, we have to move back to
the very first mainframe computers. Basically, games are designed to check
the computer performance. Similarly, newly created networks were also
checked through designing games. Let us dive into the humble beginning of
gaming world which dates back to 1940.

1940-1962

10
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

1940 was the time when the first ever mathematical computer game was
introduced through Nimtron. Later between 1950 -52, NIMROD and OXO
were introduced that took the attention of fun freaks towards them.
(Chikhani, 2017) With the advent of IT in every field of life, online took a
turning point and Spacewar was introduced that can be played on multiple
stations.

1962- 1993

This was the time when technological innovations were bringing changes to
the world of gaming. Host based network gave birth to internet which
eventually proved to be a dynamic news for the gaming community.
Multiplayer gaming spread like a jungle fire with the help of time sharing and
Pokemon Go was launched in 1971.

1972- 1981

1970 was the decade of releasing gaming consoles and joystick arcade
games were introduced, Atari VCS was the promising innovation of that time
that made the youth crazy about gaming. With the passage of time games
with 32 instantaneous players has opened a new world for the gaming
freaks. Multi user dungeon (MUD) development gave an entry into virtual
world. Initially players were allowed to get access to online gaming from 2
AM to 7 AM by the British Telecom. MidiMaze was another innovation under
Atari ST that made connecting of 16 consoles together at a time. For this
purpose MIDI-OUT port had to be connected to the other computer’s MIDI-IN
port.

1990’s

1993 was the time when “Pathway to Darkness” and the “LAN Party” created
a new history. Affordable internet packages and Ethernet cards made life of
the online gaming lovers easier and LAN multiplayer games became talk of
the town. April 30, 1993, the public domain was made open to the World

11
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

Wide Web software and Sega and Nintendo appeared on the sphere of online
gaming. Maganicwars.com. (2017).  Telephone connection and cartridge
were made a source to download software and games without much
technical support. This games download allowed the players to select any
game of their choice from software developers across the world and play
them up to maximum of eight times free of cost. But unfortunately, this
method didn’t get much popularity and was finally hit by the introduction of
satellite modem peripheral in 1995 by Nintendo. Now games, online
broadcasts and cheats could be easily downloaded but this technology
remained limited to Japan only.

From 1993 to 1996, despite of all the attempts made by Sega, Nintendo and
Atari to provide online gaming through cable providers but all in vain.
Actually the internet slow speed didn’t make it possible and made them to
explore new ways.

3.1. Online Gaming in the 21st Century

Sega Dreamcast was the first ever internet ready console that came into
existence in 2000. The additional attributes like 56 Kbps modem and
PlanetWeb browser (in copied form) made internet gaming a strong part of
its setup. This revolution brought by Dreamcast gained maximum popularity
but it holds only one drawback and that was its expensive billing. With the
advent of latest computer processor technology, the innovations dropped the
cost of internet usage. 3.2 billion People across the world got access to
internet through cheaper cost packages. This lowering of prices made online
gaming popular among 1.5 billion people.

Free online games under the name of popular software sites like Kongregate
took attention across the globe. DigiSecrets. (2017) Online gaming
enthusiasts, can improve their gaming capabilities through the usage of
personal online components provided by different popular games. Advances
in online gaming brings more refined graphics and quirky consoles that

ultimately blow the outdated generation out of water. Online gaming has
become a shared activity and game lovers find it a blessing to connect with
their family and friends through these online gaming.

Xbox 360
Xbox 360 has a mind blowing innovation for the online gamers that made
“death match” games to be played against millions of aristocracies around
the globe. Call of Duty Modern Warfare is one of the common example that is
commonly played with an online component and the players enjoy an
improved experienced every time. Mentalfloss.com. (2017)

3.1.1. Online Gaming Moving towards Mobile

Smartphones and app store have brought another evolution in the world of
online gaming. Gaming has become more of a fun in a way never before.
Rapid technological advancement during the past decade has opened new
skies of revenue for the console based gaming developers. The online
gaming industry is continuously busy in introducing more exciting games not
only for the youth but senior aged fellows are also found becoming an addict
of this online gaming mania. Anon, (2017). The monopoly of few gaming
developers since decades is now beaten by app stores of Apple and Google
and they are earning huge profit by introducing new games through their
app store.

Clash of Clans is one of the recent example that has captured the attention
of almost very internet user. Millions of players are using their cell phones
and PCs to invade new territories in clash of clans.

4.0. Evolution of Online Gaming

Competition and comparison with other is something which is human inbuilt
instinct and to satisfy this inner hunger, humans keep them busy in
competing with others either in the field of education, status or gaming.
Online gaming is a way to make yourself superior from others by beating
them in multiplayer games. What a feeling of thrill one experiences when he
or she beats someone while playing. Apostol, L. (2017). This thrill and
excitement has made people addicted to online gaming. But the thought of
the day is here this competition phobia related with online gaming heading
our lives towards?

Online Casino and Gambling

14
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

Decades back games were played in a casino and gambling was a way to
earn money by the gaming professionals. But after 1990 this casino trend
was blown away by online gaming. Though it was not common till 90’s but
with the advent of time and latest technology in internet, first online Poker
game was played in 1998 for earning purpose. That gave rise to online
gambling which should never be acceptable in a civilized society.
Cs.cmu.edu. (2017). Casinos attract their target customers through internet
advertising and that was the time when gambling business reached its peak.

15
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

4.1.1. World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft has over 12 million subscribers across the world and this
shows how extensively online gaming has been adapted by people from four
corner of world. New star wars and all other multiplayers games has awaken
up a never ending passion in the gaming addicts which is eventually bringing
endless harms to their lives.

4.1.2. What’s Upcoming Next?

With the continuous projection of latest technologies in web industry, there is
more to expect for the online gamers. Latest innovations are online
streaming of different games, gesture control to play games without the
support of controller thus turning online gaming into a reality. Cloud gaming
is yet another opportunity as it opens games to massive server size limits, no
upgraded disc memory or console size is required to play heavy games now.
Big icons in the gaming industry are now providing landmark multiplayer
partner ships in collaboration with each other. New and exciting games are
supposed to be brought to general public with high class virtual reality and
360 degree volumetric visuals. These gaming industry has planned to work
with different sports organizations like NBA to facilitate their fans having a
cutting edge experience by immersing them in the real game.

5.0. Effect of online gaming on behavior during

development

16
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

Online games are played on computers and laptops, mobiles, game consoles
– connected through the Wi-Fi. Some games can be downloaded or bought
while others can be played online without any charges. Of the most populous
are virtual reality games which allow the user to set up a profile, create a
character according to their desire and divulge into a simulated world. There
they can interact with users all over the globe and play games and complete
challenges.

In the recent years the online gaming industry has dominated the
entertainment industry and has hence become the most admired form of
entertainment that is used to pass leisure time. As gaming is available for
people with various age groups- both children and adults play them. Why go
outside and play when you can immerse yourself in a fictional world and
combat dragons, warriors and monsters?

Gaming may be enjoyable and entertaining but their disadvantages outweigh

their advantages. Nowadays, video games have become an addiction for
teenagers- they stay glued to their seats all day, determined complete
various missions and reach higher scores. While making high scores and
completing missions of the game pleases them and makes them joyful,
losing the game makes them uneasy and apprehensive.

17
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

Online games are bringing out behavioral changes in people, especially

teenagers. The sudden change in the popularity level of violent games is the
biggest factor contributing to the constantly altering attitude of the youth.
Exposure to such vicious and graphic games shoots adrenaline levels to their
peak. This subsequently causes a drastic increment in the heart rate and
queasiness and heightens the violent streak in them.

Another downside to video games is isolation from the outside world. Kids
these days invest more time in playing video games and can choose staying
inside over physically playing outside at any time of the day. Thus, children
miss out on the ideal opportunity to meet new people and make new friends.
Lack of face to face interaction disconnects the child from the reality. This
detachment from the society causes the child to become introverted and
anti- social.

Obesity has become one of the major health problems these days. Now
denying the involvement of video games in said issue would be blatantly
ignoring the obvious. We can’t say that video games haven’t played they fair
share in increasing child obesity substantially in the past few years. Like
lounging on the sofa in front of the TV or the computer screen 24/7 is going
to do any good to your physical health. Lack of physical activity and exercise

18
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

makes the kid’s weight’s rocket considerably and their health’s plummet.
Kids consequently get lethargic and refuse to leave the confines of their
homes to partake in outdoor activities.

Such games especially character-based games with unsociable central

characters appear to influence how youngsters think of themselves. This
consequently puts their behavior at a high risk and brings about changes in
the users’ personality, thus making them more defiant and daring.

But research has also shown that playing video games can also have a
positive impact on one’s development for a significant number of reasons.
The players face new problems and challenges on every level of the game.
The challenges require them to decide what action needs to be taken and
what task needs to be executed next .Tackling and confronting these
problems engages their mind and improves their thinking skills, therefore
sharpening their mind. Their decision making skills are also developed as
they learn how to operate and make decisions in dire situations. Some video
games require the player to think fast which increases their thought process
speed. Doing multiple tasks simultaneously enhances their multi- tasking
skills. Following a set of rules and regulations while playing a particular game
makes a person more vigilant and time oriented.

In the year 2013, three teachers in the School of Information Technology (IT)
held a survey to see how online gaming affected the academic performance
of college students. An unspecified survey was held online to collect all the
data needed for the study. The assessment was performed by asking them
30 questions. The students’ educational performance was calculated by
reviewing their overall GPA. The factors that contributed the most to the
students’ performance were self-control, social interaction, and gaming
platform. The end result showed that those who frequently indulged in video
gaming had better informed of the computer. The undergraduates who took
part in games using numerous gaming platforms attained a higher score in
their tests and exams than others.

5.1. ONLINE GAMING ADDICTION IN YOUTH

Online gaming has recently become a growing concern. Computer game
addiction commonly refers to an excessive use of video games. Rather than
interacting with the real world, the gamer feels compelled to isolate him
from his surrounding and submerge into the virtual reality world.

This addiction causes the gamer to feel restlessness when he is unable to

play the game and his mind is always preoccupied with the thoughts of
previous online activity. The gamer becomes completely obsessed with the
game and therefore avoids sleeping and skips meals. This consequently
makes him sleep deprived and unhealthy. According to Wikipedia, the 2009
OSDUHS Mental Health and Well-Being Report, by the Centre for Addiction
and Mental Health (CAMH) in Toronto, Ontario, showed almost 10% of 9,000
examined students from Grades 7 to 12 play online games for a minimum of
7 hours each day.

Compulsive gaming also leads to failed relationships,

unemployment, or loss of educational opportunities. The player
struggles to manage his playing habits becomes so engrossed in the virtual
world that the game becomes his priority and prime concern while his career
and education just become secondary things.

20
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

Gamers also often avoid other commitments to continue playing the game.
Games like The Sims, Dota and League of Legends are famous for being
highly addictive. These games emerge you in a virtual world that you get
completely absorbed by and it becomes difficult for you to stop playing.

As some video games involve the person to compete with other players, the
gamer feels the need to win from his opponent and undergoes a sense of
agitation if he fails to do so. The addiction sometimes worsens to the extent
that gamers find themselves becoming depressed if they do not accomplish

21
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

the said tasks in the games. This depression adversely affects their mental
health.

While playing online games, the gamer is required to collaborate with other
gamers. During this process, the gamer can become a victim of peer
pressure which can result in the person putting his fellow gamers’ opinions
above his parent’s opinions and in extreme cases, even over his own. This
may also consequently lead to the person divulging into things that he does
not like or appreciate personally for instance: drug use.

Many gamers have admitted to have been using online gaming as an escape
from the reality world. They have confessed to have been bailing out on real
life and plunging into the virtual world when things get too tough. These
adolescents who play online games excessively for exodus are likely to
develop unhealthy ways of dealing with stress which can have an adverse
influence on their psychosocial development.

Video games are seen as a necessity in the eyes on the gamers and they
tend to spend excessively on them. They spend carelessly on game updates,
expansion packs and various service fees. Since such expenditure goes out
of hand, the gamer becomes financially unstable.

If the game requires the gamer to finish a specified task within a given
amount of time, the person goes to every length to complete his mission on
time, even if that means sacrificing his own sleep. Insufficient sleep can
result in the person having extreme mood swings and becoming cranky and
bad- tempered.

Though video game addiction is a major problem, it is one that can be

treated. This can be done in many ways. The gamer can be enforced to play
games for a specific period of time. Furthermore, parents can restrict the use
of electronic gadgets at night time to prevent sleep deprivation. Parents can
also stop them from playing games for a long period of time by encouraging
them to do real-life activities such as playing outside or interacting with

22
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

friends or family so that they develop socially. If the symptoms of gaming

addiction are detected in a gamer then a therapist with experience in
electronic addictions should be consulted immediately so that the matter can
be treated.

5.1.1. Video games and Violent Behavior

Violent games are the talk of the day and First Person Shooting has
contributed greatly to this growing popularity. It allows users to gain a
clearer and more intimate experience while playing games. Players feel more

23
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

connected to the game. Many studies have been held on the increasing
popularity of violent games and after must research it was found that playing
such games which depict such brutal and horrendous things are having an
adverse effect on the minds of the youth and is making them more
aggressive. These aggressive thoughts bring keep building and thus bring
about frustration and negative thoughts and behavior towards other people.
This acts as a great threat to the person’s mental health and the wellbeing of
the society collectively. When such aggressive behavior is invoked in a
player through games like these, gamers have violent thoughts and
tendencies.

24
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

Video games have affected many individuals and it is crucial to learn the
disadvantages of gaming as it has been the cause of real-life tragedies. In
1999, a shooting at Columbine was conducted by a group of students, when
interrogated about the shooting, shooter Anders Behring Breivik proclaimed
that games such as Modern Warfare and DOOM was the source of his
training. Worldscientific.com. (2017) The widespread violence is the major
reason why governments are imposing taxes on video games and restricting
25
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

games for certain age groups. A recent report conducted studied the results
of the 100 studies on use of violent games. The study was conducted by APA.
The report concluded that playing violent video games can cause aggressive
behavior in individuals and can reduce the empathy and increase tolerance
towards aggression. Another conclusion of the study was that some studies
have suggested a link between violent video games and criminal behavior
but there still wasn’t enough evidence to declare a definitive link between
the two.

Exposure to violence has greatly influenced the minds of adolescents.

Gaming has also stimulated empathy towards violence in adolescents
because it teaches them to associate happiness with their capability to inflict
pain and torment others.

Measures should be taken to avoid playing evidently violent games. Popular

games such as Dead Space, Mortal Kombat, Medal of Honor, Call of Duty:
Black Ops, Grand Theft Auto and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood are
some of the games that are rated to be the most violent. These
games should obviously be avoided by children at all costs as
suggested by the above 18 rating of these games. BBC News. (2017).

The video games are rated according to the violence factor.

However, you can never know how definitive these ratings are and if
they can single handedly point out which games should be avoided
by which age group. The best thing to do is that parents should be
vigilant and should always monitor what games their children are
playing online. Researchers suggest that one single factor alone
does not cause violent behavior in individuals but rather it is always
a combination of different factors that leads to children getting
violent.

6.0. Online Gaming Either an Addiction or…..?

27
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

As we discussed before about the history and evolution of online gaming,

one thing has been made clear that these online games are the best source
of connecting with people across the globe. Though it seems like something
of great benefit but contrary to that researches have shown that the impact
of too much engagement with the online communities many times lead to an
addictive kind of involvement which eventually gives birth to depression.
Researchers also refer this kind of excessive involvement in online gaming
as a problematic use. We have to give answer to these important questions
that if,

 Depression is an ultimate consequence of online gaming addiction?

 A specific symptom?
 Or a first step towards humanly destruction?

We will answer all these questions in our research paper through different
surveys, research charts and will analyze the social and psychological impact
of online gaming in our everyday life. Musetti, A., Cattivelli, R., Giacobbi, M.,
Zuglian, P., Ceccarini, M., Capelli, F., Pietrabissa, G. and Castelnuovo, G.
(2017).

health)

6.1.1. What Makes Online Gaming Addictive?

29
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

The talk of the day is that what are the prospects that make online gaming
so addictive are. To understand this we will take an example from a popular
game of year 2014, “The Aerosol Challenge” which gave a challenge to
teenage online gamers to spray themselves with deodorant from the nearest
distance. The purpose behind this challenge was to see who of the gamer
could tolerate the pain and intensity for longest. Reports had shown that that
challenge left many of the children with terrible kind of burns. Some games
offer firing challenge that demands the gamers to spray flammable liquid on
themselves and then setting it to flame. The challengers were asked to post
their daring challenges on social media to gain maximum fame. Kotaku.com.
(2017

Another game challenges the players to intake excessive amount of a

combination of various alcoholic drinks which reported multiple deaths in
return. Same is the case with ‘Blue Whale” game which ends with a 50 day
trial of different challenges and final task as jumping from a high rise
building which eventually caused deaths.

Through all these games we can see the hidden passion for enjoying the
ecstatic experience through some sort of violence.

6.1.2. Reasons for Accepting Gaming Challenges

 A Spiral of Dares and Achievement through Challenges

30
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

(Figure showing the percentage perception of different players

towards online gaming)

31
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

Through the above model it becomes clear that online gaming

becomes a challenge for the players because approx. 73% of players
take their excellence in gaming to beat their competitors and prove
themselves to be the master of this art i.e. online gaming while 69%
get addicted to online gaming to satisfy their sense of achievement.
Only 19% utilize their gaming skills to practice their creative
competence and 14% play these to get socially connected with their
family and friends. Pdfs.semanticscholar.org. (2017).  So, the basic
motivation behind getting addicted is surpass the others skills just for
the sake of some rivalry intuitions.
Constant competition in a multiplayer online game makes the teenage
players to spend 10 to 12 hours a day in playing. Like any other
addiction, online gaming addiction penetrates deep down into the daily
routine of a player and gradually makes a player addictive to this
game. After getting addicted a player needs the same level of getting
high by accepting different challenges given by game and their fellow
competitors. According to an online gaming addict, “nothing is
higher than the joy of beating others and getting winning
position.”

 A Escape from Social Life Responsibilities

Gamers take spending time on online gaming and accepting day to day
challenging tasks as an escape from real life responsibilities,
expectations of the near and dear ones and societal involvements.
According to a psychiatrist who is consulting such kind of gaming
addicts, the gamers experience a feeling of freedom, a sensation of
exploring something while keeping themselves hidden from the eyes of
social acquaintances. Accepting challenges is another name of taking
risks that is no lesser than a great adventure for them.

 Role of Online Psychopaths

32
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

Another reason why people get addicted to online gaming is the main
role of online psychopaths. There are numerous examples where some
game developers in order to make huge profits from their games turn
into the gamers online psychopaths. They start their trap by engaging
the gamer in different questions and enforcing them to reveal their
secrets in front of them. Techaddiction.ca. (2017). For this purpose
these so called online psychopaths give the gamer a listening ear and
understanding impression and tempt the gamer to forget all their
sorrows and sufferings by getting involved in online gaming. Blue
whale is one of the recent example of such psychopathic games where
the player is first invited to open some game link and once the player
get into it, the game developer motivates them to take all the tasks as
a challenge.

Moreover, if they find any kind of hesitation from the player side, these
online psychopaths encourage the player by giving moderating
statements like, ‘Can’t you do this for me?’ or ‘Bravo you are strong
enough to overcome this challenge.’ These kind of motivational
questions attach a special kind of feeling of self- esteem with accepting
and clearing the challenge that the player finds it his failure if does not
accept and fulfil the challenge.
Moving towards the next level not only gives satisfaction to the player
but also fills the pockets of developers with money.

6.1.3. The Connection of Problematic Usage with Depression and

Self-Regulation
Under this statement we will discuss that either over-usage of an
entertainment product can create base for developing depression and
changed behavior. The word ‘addiction’ itself holds strange negative

33
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

impression and over usage of online gaming refers directly to the word
addiction. The relation of addiction, depression and engagement all relate to
online gaming. The marketing departments of game developers and the
media both consider the addictive qualities of their games as a source of
gaining popularity. They manipulate the meaning of addictive quality as a
positive factor for their gaming industry and mention it like something
bringing reinforcement and desire to learn and explore more.

6.1.4. Pathological Point of View

This kind of addiction is termed as engagement with the game by the game
developers without knowing the consequences of this adverse engagement.
If we talk through the clinical point of view, we can call this addiction as the
pathological usage of internet. Clinical researches on this addiction
connected the addiction to online gaming with Goodman’s criteria for
addictive behavior which we are just going to elaborate. Their research and
findings give us in depth know how about the ways this gaming addiction can
disrupts a normal person’s life and behavior (Goodman, 1990).

Addictive Sickness and Goodman’s Criteria

Failure to control instincts to continue in a specified behavior for

34
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

long.

Stress and tension engulfing the player prior to commencing the

behavior.

A sense of relief and pleasure while undergoing through that

behavioral change.

Five of the under mentioned changes will occur in the player;

1. A feeling of restlessness if the player feels unable to continue with

the specific behavior.

2. Keeping pace with the same behavior without knowing the social,
economic, ethical, psychological problems it may cause to the
player.

3. Neglecting all other social and recreational activities because of this

behavior.

4. Spending more time and energies in all those activities that support
the addictive behavior.

5. Last but not the least, spending long hours with the same behavior
or in activities that are preparatory to the behavior.

Ailments

7.0. How is Depression Related to Online Gaming?

By the word depression we mean a state of mood swinging between

sadness, disappointment and grief over something. It also refers to
discouragement and the extreme state of depression leads a person towards
dysthymia to acute distressed mood. According to latest studies on online
gaming, it has become evident that depression, Obsessive Compulsive
Disorder (OCD) and hypertension all are interlinked and associated to online
gaming.

A study was carried out in University of Bergen, Norway which linked

excessive involvement in online gaming with escape mechanism which
ultimately leads to psychiatric disorder. Large groups of teenagers were
observed who spent most of their time in online gaming or who could rather
be called as online gaming addicts. Techaddiction.ca. (2017).  A comparison
was made between two groups of online gamers and it was found that those
who spent 31 hours a week, as compared to 19 hours a week were the one
who become a victim of depression and anxiety more frequently than the
others. These are the people who suffered from social phobias as well. Their
academic performance used to fall rapidly and so their involvement in social
activities apparently dropped down.

Another study which was conducted among the Chinese school students who
fall between the age of 13 to 18, it got clear that excessive players became
the dupe of depression nine months before than those who were never an
online gamer addict. Same students were found socially isolated as
compared to normal students because they get a feeling of relief while
playing games online and creating their own dream world of victory and sole

36
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

power. They do not want anyone to interfere in their doom of triumph that is
why they avoid getting involved in too much social gatherings.

Self- Regulation

37
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

38
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

Sub categories of self- regulation

To describe self-regulation, we have to understand the Bandura’s Social

Cognitive theory of personality in depth. In simple words we can say that
self- regulation means a human quality where he becomes able to manage
his behavior through thorough observation, analysis and consequences. How
self-regulation can help an online gamer to manage his behavioral changes
while playing. To understand this theory we have to split self- regulation into
three sub categories which are mentioned below,

1. Self-monitoring
2. Self-evaluation
3. Self- consequence

If a gamer spends excessive hours on online gaming and is completely

unable to manage other responsibilities and regular routine shows that he is
facing a failure in self-monitoring. This failure will create more problems like
inability to track time properly, distraction in academic performance and
other social activities. Anonews.co. (2017)

Self –evaluation means that the online gaming addict is unable to evaluate
his time sparing in different activities. The individual should know that how
much time is allotted to him for playing games and how much time actually
he is spending on it. He should analyze his time management and come to a
solution that where he was wrong. Through self-evaluation he or she should
evaluate that does his co-workers also spend the same hours in online
gaming or at other healthy activities. Then he should make a wise decision
regarding his irregular activities. A wise comparison may lead a gamer’s life
towards a healthy living and a failure in evaluating will drag him towards
depression and destruction. Information about external standards can be

39
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

gained through self-monitoring process.

The above diagram shows that even after self-regulation and continuous
attempts to quit the online game addiction, how the gamers fail to quit this
addiction. 40% of the respondents belong to the ages between 12 to 17
years and they really failed to quit their game addiction. Time. (2017). For
such addicts clinical and complete psychological treatment is required to quit
this addiction.

Self-consequence is the stage where after making self-evaluation based on

the external standards gained through self-monitoring, a person plans to
modify his wrong behavior and lead a healthy life. At this phase behavioral
contingencies are created that help the gamer to judge his punishment or
ways to reinforce his behavior. The possible relationship between self-
regulation and problematic use of online gaming are open sources to
evaluate the level of depression that is caused by them. Failure of self-
regulation to cure problematic usage leads to a depressed soul. A depressed
gamer has a habit of under-estimating his skills and capabilities and accepts

40
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

his defeat easily even before it occurs. The negative evaluation of oneself on
continuous basis may cause other psychological disorders that sometimes
lead to more drastic results like suicidal attempts.

7.1. Online Gaming Addiction and Neurosciences

Recent researches have proved many neurobiological changes that take

place due to excessive gaming and addiction. Clear changes in brain activity
can be found which are caused due to online gaming addiction. In the
scientific terms we can say that there are two major constituents that make
a gamer to initiate the addictive behavior of that person and these are
prefrontal cortex and ventral striatum. A specific fluid called dopaminergic is
released in the brain that moderates the compulsive behavior of player
through developing game addiction. (Tech Times. (2017).

41
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

The synapses present in the ventral tegmental area of a human brain fails to
keep a mind at relaxing state and results in long term depression and
anxiety. A collective result of all kind of studies on online gaming showed
that the hedonic impulse produced through online gaming outcomes as
unusual behavior, intolerance and self-denial symptoms. The frequent co-
occurrence of addictive internet gaming with depression at its acute stage
leads to various personality disorders among which one is bipolar disorder.

Sometimes the excessive internet gaming turns quite salient and make the
gamer to lose control over his game. While the brain demands continuous
connectivity with the game till the gamer achieves his desired target. This
fight between the tired body and brain’s winning instinct usually collapses
the overall cognitive system of the player resulting in adverse personality
disaster.

7.1.2. Online Gaming Addiction and Clinical Diagnosis

Spending two decades in researching human behavior’s association with

online gaming, the American Psychiatric Association has declared that online
gaming addiction has its own distinct nature and it should be considered as a
disordered to be examined by the doctors and researchers. They can also be
termed as impulse control disorders in general. Different psychometric
instruments have been invented to measure the level of other aspects on
online gaming addiction.

42
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

The clinical symptoms observed for persistent use of gaming consists of lack
of control, no interest in other activities, mood swings, failure in maintaining
relationships, joblessness, intolerant behavior and many more. The above
given graph shows multiple reflexes experienced by pathological and non-
pathological gamers. We can see that approximate 75% of pathological
gamers showed strong signs for a feeling of addiction while 27% show their
fight to win against the addiction and this is only possible if proper and
continuous clinical support is taken from some rehabilitation center.
Researches in this field may help the victims of this disorder in many ways
as mentioned below,

 Anyone suffering from any of the above mentioned ailments may ask
for clinical help,
 The addicted gamer may return towards normal life after complete
treatment,
 It may safe many lives of those addicted people who do not accept
failure and commit suicide,
 It will help in conducting future researches on this subject,
 It will change public’s perception towards the myth that gaming
addiction is incurable. Psychguides.com. (2017).

43
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

7.1.3. Suicidal Attempts and Online Gaming

Different researches has proved that more than five hours of daily online
gaming leads to grief, long hours of depression, anxiety attacks and even
suicidal attempts. According to some surveys conducted by Dr. Messias in
2007 and 2009 concluded that those who spend more than 5 hours regularly
on online gaming are the ones who have attempted suicidal acts more than
once as an effort to get rid of their continuous gloomy and depressed life.
Taneja, S. (2017). However, it was also reported that medical and
psychological treatment can reduce these prolonged hours of sadness and
anxiety.

Suicide Trend in Online Gaming Addicts

The Blue Whale Phobia

According to an investigative report, 17 teenagers committed suicide

because of online gaming addiction. Blue whale game is more of a life
threatening game as it involves players dying while clearing its challenges.
Each of the next game level is more horrifying and teasing the self- esteem
of the player. A failure to complete the advance level drags the player more
towards a feeling of catastrophe and let down. Blue whale is available online
with the following different names,

 Siniy Kit
 Tikhiy Dom
 More Kitov and
 Razbudi

According to a research conducted from 2013 till 2016, the game developers
created eight different groups on internet to attract the target audience
towards them through different names. All these games are the source of
developing suicidal behavior in the player that ultimately drag them towards
death. Blue Whale comprises of a challenging trial of 50 days where the

44
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

players are encouraged to explore the next level by overcoming challenges

given in the previous levels. Schoolbag.sg. (2017).

7.1.4. Case Studies Related to Blue Whale Game

Here we are going to discuss a case study related to a failed suicidal attempt
made by a 15 years old girl in Russia. According to her statement, she made
her account at Vkontake site where she took interest in a new game by the
name of ‘Blue Whale’. Here is a transcript of her online conversation with the
game curator,

Online Conversation of Girl

“Are you sure? There is no way back,”

On her question to explain what is meant by no way back the so-called

curator of game exclaimed that the player can’t leave the game once he or
she signs in. Further the girl added that all the task assigned should be
performed secretly not even involving a single person about the game and
task assigned. According to her statement though the initial task were quite
simple and daring but the later tasks turned more complex and nearest to
self-harm and torture.

The victimized girl was found badly injured, near to death near her school
where she jumped from the roof top of the school building. She admitted that
while following the instructions from the curator and completing them
successfully, she approached the last task of blue whale game where she
was enforced to jump from some high rise building to achieve her so called
game’s final target.

The girl exclaimed with embarrassment that she was left with no other
chance but to accept the challenge because she was continuously
threatened by the curator. Moreover, she was black mailed for some secrets
that she shared with the game curator.

45
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

Clinical Examination of the Girl

Clinical and psychological examination of that girl through researches and

medical specialists revealed the following truths about the girl,

 The girl faced immense mental torture during the phase of her game
addiction,
 Prominent signs of self-harm and torture were found on her body parts,
 She was at the acute stages of depression that regulated her whole
body mechanism to opposite lines,
 She became a patient of intolerance and was willing to live an isolated
life,
 Her mental disorder led her to commit suicide,
 She was more reluctant to turn back to life now.

The above mentioned case study of a blue whale victim proved that how
online gaming can drag a sensible person towards death. According to
Professor Suler from Science and Technology Center, Rider University, US
and the author of many books explained self- harm through online gaming as
a combined effort of other players with same psychological disorders. Rediff.
(2017) He said that in previous decades all the psychopaths with bipolar
disorder or borderline personalities used to do self -harm alone and secrecy.
They do not want others to know about their mental illness but online
gaming has turned the gamers with fragile self-esteem as they can easily
find other like- minded people online who motivate each other to commit
self-torture and advise new and unique ways of self –harm to each other.

All these kind of vulnerable online gaming addicts are actually empty from
inside and are real attention seekers. They feel satisfaction in gaining
sympathies from unknown people and do not want to move out of their circle
of sociological psychopaths. Need of the day is to create rehabilitation
strategies and imply such actions that can safeguard the youth from
becoming an online gaming addict.

8.0. Proposed Guidelines from Psychiatrists and Doctors Regarding

How to Leave Gaming Addiction
Though getting rid of any kind of addiction is too difficult but it is never
impossible. Repeated efforts can help an online gaming addict to recover
from this addiction. Let us look at the under mentioned graph.

47
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

48
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

The above graph shows the day to day interest level that is developed in
online gaming specifically blue whale game. It shows how within a time
duration of only six months the interest level reaches its peak where there is
left no other option to revert back to normal life. The more a gamer
increases his interest in blue whale kind of fatal game, the more he reaches
on the bank of death via suicide.

8.1.1. Guidelines to Revert Back from any Kind of Online Gaming

Addiction

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive behavior theory is one of the common theories to redevelop self-

control from any kind of additive habit. Under this therapy the addict
undergoes several levels where he is made to change his addictive behavior
and perception about online gaming. If it is found that this addiction was an
after effect of any other kind of tension or depression, series of psychological
sessions will be conducted to locate the actual cause of this online game
addiction.

49
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

Besides this therapy there are few other support groups that can help to
bring back the spontaneity in the addict’s life. Certain medications are also
there that help to bring back the compulsive behavior and takes the patient
back to his healthy life. Pdfs.semanticscholar.org. (2017). One of the basic
therapy for the addictive person is emotional support from the family
members and friends. Community support is quite powerful that can help the
addict in fighting against the online gaming addiction.

50
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

Healthcare practitioners are the professionals who have great competency to

treat the gaming addict. They have distinct tools and methodologies that are
a great source of turning the addict back to normal life.

The under mentioned table shows how the online gaming addiction effects
one’s health. There are given accurate figures and data that shows result of
a research done on various people who are online gaming addict. The table
shows different health dimensions that are affected by addiction to gaming.
The basic health disorders comprises of anxiety, depression and isolation
from social life. Let us have a look at the facts and figures;

Family Contribution

Family members are the people who can check the daily routine of gamers
and should strict the gaming time to specified hours. Children are the
responsibility of the family so they should keep an eye on the indoor and
outdoor activities, friends and social circle of the kid. If you find that your
child or young boy/girl is spending more than 4 hours daily on online gaming,
try to know the reasons behind that. Check his academic performance and if
you find it affected due to over-usage of net, immediate control is required.
Never hang around with your friends neglecting your child and leaving him
alone behind. Always remember, any kind of addiction is a reaction to certain
environmental, social and family factors. Usually a neglected child is more to
move towards unhealthy activities.

Instead of online games, the victim’s attention should be directed towards

other physical activities like outdoor games like soccer, football, lawn tennis
etc. If the patient is still interested in internet activities, his interest should
be diverted towards other online activities like Instagram, discussion forums,
Pinterest etc.

If you are at mature age and still get addicted to online gaming, wait for a
while, give some time to your online and offline activities. Give attention to
your job routine and try to overcome if you find any barriers in the way to
your practical life. Try to avoid all kind of unhealthy online activities.

9.0. Conclusion

52
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

Online gaming is one of the fastest growing information technology industry

of this era. Game developers generate huge revenues from this industry but
the problem occurs when these games become a kind of addiction for the
public. Though besides few game developers who are basically a kind of
psychopaths themselves and creating fatal type of online games, online
games can be taken as a source of entertainment, training and best
companions for the players. But like all other things excess of hours spent on
gaming imply various negative impacts on the people.

Few games have been charged as killer games because lot of people have
been reported committing suicide after accepting weird challenges offered in
these games. The basic instinct behind accepting these challenges may vary
from person to person but allowing any online game to take players life
should be considered as a crime by the social media management and
governments.

Research should be done to see what are the factors that drive a sensible
and intelligent person to perform this act of negativity by developing fatal
games? Actually the developers of such games should be taken under
psychological sessions first.

Different clinical disorders are regarded as a cause of getting addict to online

gaming and possible treatments are proposed to get rid of this addiction.
Research, N. (2017). Community services and support are granted as the
biggest help in getting rid of this addiction. However, it is suggested that
online games should be taken as an entertainment source or a way to
socialize with friends and family.

53
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

9.1.1. Limitations
A few limitations were faced while conducting the research. The most
significant was the time frame given to complete the task. The vast subject
of focus is multidimensional and only a Comprehensive Overview could be
provided within the given time frame. Hence this can be regarded as a Pilot
Project.

The Frame work has been built Literature available which has limitations of
its own. Methodology adopted has its own limitations which are dependent
on the researcher and online gaming victim’s interactions and presented
hindrance.

Another kind of hindrance in conducting this research is that the victims of

online gaming addiction are suffering from severe sort of psychological
trauma and they do not want to share their experience with any outsider.
Their family is also passing through the same kind of scenario so they are
more reluctant towards cooperating with us and also ignore the
questionnaire distributed by us for answering. Their societal isolation is the
major barrier in conducting the research work on this subject.

Even with the fore mentioned limitations a clear picture of negative impact
of online gaming on inter-personal life, its integrity in terms of treatment
available for general public and its implication in today’s and future life of
the youth has collectively made it a success. But there is always room for
improvement. Revisions and comments on this study will help it upgrade
with time.

9.1.2. Future Research

Wide examination of research material collected from 1940 onwards to 2017
has been focused. Online gaming addiction remains the most challenging

54
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

factor for this research paper. As in Medicine dealing with human lives,
psychology is another important therapy to bring back the online gaming
addict towards life. It is a wishful thinking that through future policies of
internet usage, negative impacts of online gaming will reduce to negligible
levels if not overcome completely. But the need of the day is that authentic
treatments should be introduced to protect our youth from getting addicted
to online gaming. Youth is the future of any nation and it should be
prevented from practicing any kind of unhealthy activities for the prosperous
future of any nation. We love our youth and should negate all kind of
unhealthy approaches made by them towards life.

10.0. Appendices

There are images of few of the surveys that were conducted in person or
online asking people about different aspects of online gaming. These survey
reports and readings will show that how and what kind of behavioral changes
online gaming addiction brings in a player’s life. Moreover it shows that boys

55
Negative Impact of Online Gaming

are more likely to be found as an online gaming addict as compared to girls.
