Unit Objectives
● Students will learn the key of Concert F
● Students will understand how to play in the key of Concert F

Rationale
Students will expand their musical knowledge through the ability to play in a new key.

Lesson Plans
Lesson #1
Objective:
● Students will play the first line (the scale portion) of #96 in the Standard of
Excellence Book 1
Rationale:
● Students will learn the notes of the Concert F major scale
Standards Addressed:
● MIB.1; MIB.2; MIB.4; MIB.6; MIB.10; MIB.11; MIB.12; MIB.13
Process:
1. Ask students what notes they see in the key signature
a. The point is to show that Concert E natural is the new note
2. Teach concert E natural fingerings to each section
3. Count through the first line of the song
a. Repeat at least twice
b. Isolate specific measures if necessary
4. Sizzle through the first line of the song with correct fingerings
a. Repeat at least twice
b. Isolate specific measures if necessary
5. Play through the first line of the song
a. Repeat at least twice
b. Isolate specific measures if necessary
Assessment:
● Students will be informally assessed through listening and providing feedback
throughout the lesson
Potential Challenges:
● Students may struggle learning Concert E natural
● Students may have trouble hearing the difference between Concert E natural and

Lesson #2
Objective:
● Students will play the second line (the arpeggio) of #96 in the Standard of
Excellence Book 1
Rationale:
● Students will practice playing in the key of Concert F without using stepwise
motion

● MIB.1; MIB.2; MIB.4; MIB.6; MIB.10; MIB.11; MIB.12; MIB.13
Process:
1. Count through the first line of the song
a. Repeat at least twice

Concert F
Rationale:
● Students will practice applying their knowledge of the key of Concert F
Standards Addressed:
● MIB.1; MIB.2; MIB.4; MIB.6; MIB.10; MIB.11; MIB.12; MIB.13
Process:
1. Students will complete three levels of sight reading exercises in Concert F
2. Each exercise uses less stepwise motion to encourage and reinforce
understanding of the new key signature
Assessment:
● Students’ submissions will be listened to and given feedback
Potential Challenges:
● Students may struggle sight reading in a new key
● Students may struggle sight reading in Concert F when the music is not in
stepwise motion
