Lecture Series: ‘Journey from Vedas to Vedanta

Speaker: Dr. Sucheta Paranjape

This is a lecture series mainly for those who are interested in Veda and Vedanta, our great heritage,
but could not learn Sanskrit and hence were deprived of this amazing treasure, without knowing
which, we would fail to know our identity and understand ourselves even in this 21st century.

Rigveda is the oldest literature in India, in fact, in the world itself. Here is a literature which is
more than 4000 years old. In spite of its tremendous value for us, most of us are not exactly aware
of what Vedas consist of. This not-knowing has led to some kind of fear. As a result, we prefer to
keep away from them, as we feel that Vedas are not for me; they are all philosophy which is too
heavy; they deal with ancient religion and rituals which are irrelevant in the modern world and I,
in no way, am connected with them.

This lectures series aims precisely at ruling out this fear and complex in the mind of those who,
for some reason or other, are deprived of learning Sanskrit and especially, the Vedic literature
earlier in their lives.

It is a Lecture series, titled " Journey from Veda to Vedanta. " There will be five lectures and the
subjects will be these. 1. Introduction to Rigveda. 2.Some Beautiful and important Suktas from
Rigveda. 3: The other three Vedas, Yajus, Saama and Atharva. 4: Brahmana Texts .and 5:
Upanishads.

Vedic literature is a flowing literature. Apart from the Samhitas, there is no clear demarcation or
hard and fast compartments in the various texts. Some part of Yajurveda may appear more like a
Brahmana text and a Brahmana may merge with an Aranyaka and sometimes, also with an
Upanishads. Upanishads are the final stage, aim and culmination of the Vedic literature, they are
called Vedanta, Vedanta. As such, on our journey from Veda to Vedanta, there will be some
overlapping of topics.

This journey from Veda to Vedanta will give you a glimpse of that literature and introduce you to
the importance, significance and mainly, the beauty of it all. More importantly, it will inspire you
to read more on this subject.
