ABSTRACT

The expansive utilization of the English language in business

undertakings and activities has been apparent these days. It was

evidently observed by scholars that English usage should be attached

to the requisite needs of professionals for them to be at par in the

global competition of excellence. Technical terminologies are written

in English, researches are in English, and multinational companies

here and there use English. This only shows that English really plays a

big part in this modern era. Thus, the focus of this paper,

“Kaffeeklatsch: Infusing English in a Dense Cup”, is to unleash the

underlying importance of English language for a specific purpose of a

certain profession.

Through this paper, the interviewers expect to achieve the

following objectives:

 Aims to present what professionals and young students

should do with language and how to apply it properly

without having trouble in performing one’s job;

 Gives emphasis on how to develop professionals’

knowledge in their chosen field of work in line with their

language skills;

 Encompasses techniques or unique ways of professionals

to connect real life situation with their language

knowledge; and

 Targets to portray how to use language depending on

their specific setting.

English is essential in the professional world. That is what English

for Specific Purposes focuses on. It teaches the difference from

learning English at school and the actual usage of English at work.

This is why the students were tasked to conduct an interview with a

specific profession which is a barista or a coffee master. They were

challenged to have an interview with a barista with the goal of

knowing how essential English is on their field of work.

As professionals, they are often engaged with professionals as well

- people with outstanding educational attainment and are used to

interact with people, that’s why the possibility of encountering foreign

and English-speaking customers is very much likely to happen. Hence,

this paper seeks to identify the extent of English language usage

depending on the nature of one’s profession.

Chapter 1

Introduction

For decades, one of the trends in the corporate world is the

expansive utilization of the English language in business undertakings

and activities. The usage of English became a phenomenon that

changed the world set-up from one traditional dimension to a more

technologically advanced society where people are necessitated to be

adaptive and pliant to the dynamic nature of language. It was

apparently observed by scholars that English usage should be

attached to the requisite needs of professionals which is to cope with

the fast marathon of competence. Most professions nowadays are

using the English language to catch up to the demand of job

requirements and be in the run for the global competition of

excellence in the business world. The demand for the English

language continuously increases as the modern day progresses. It is

due to the fact that people are creative in terms of inventing new

words and expressions. The words invented grows in number daily

and is then continually added to the bulk vocabularies of English.

English served as the lingua franca of the world today and used by

almost all fields of profession as the mode of comprehension and

transmission. All terminologies and jargons were commenced from

English. Hence, people are obliged to study and use the language for

better understanding of things and in same manner for

communication purposes. It will be convenient if everyone is

proficient or somehow accustomed with the language so as to be at

ease when having business engagement and making good

relationships with comrades and prospects. Through decades of

extensive use of English, it appears to be essential in transforming

communication process to be more efficient at the workplace and in

creating a more organized method of economic actions in business

happenings.

English at work and English for specific purposes are two

interrelated disciplines designed to meet the international standards

for business, to cater the needs of individual learners in their

respective field of specialization, and to accommodate the challenges

faced by learners in achieving their full potential in employing their

knowledge to the work that they do in their profession. The level of

growth is not only measured through the mere experiences of the

professional but also takes into account the downfalls and failures

encountered while getting into a stage of greatness. The curriculum

covers the pivotal topics in cultivating one's potential and skills

necessary for work; one of the most useful skills is the communication

skills which is taught and included in the topics. Communication skills

is significant because it is a vital tool for professionals to prosper and

thrive in the corporate industry. In a classroom setting, academic

instructors tasked learners to imagine the business setup, internalize

the values, duties and responsibilities of existing professionals and

emulate the necessary qualities they exhibited in the field. Moreover,

the focus of the topic is to unleash the underlying importance of

English language for a specific purpose of a certain profession.

Objectives or Purposes of the Activity

Communication without language is impossible. Learning while

communicating is essential. Thus, people should really go deep into

what really matters when communicating. Does one have to possess

different skills like learning, literacy and life skills? Does one also

have to perform good usage of the language? Or maybe, does one

have to be fluent and proficient in the language people are using?

Many may be wondering what to do when having a discourse in a

professional way. Now, this gives rise to the objective and purpose of

this activity. The idea and objectives of English for Specific Purposes

is anchored to this paper’s objectives. Listed below are the objectives

of this paper:

Benefits of the interviewers in learning ESP

In today’s modern era, one cannot deny the fact that learning is

easy and accessible. One click and you will have what you want to

know. Information is readily available but this could be right or

wrong. Despite these setbacks, English for Specific Purposes focuses

on providing the learners things which they specifically need when it

comes to language usage. This activity will give the researchers points

which they will need when they become professionals. As an example,

when writing a business letter, the set of words to be used, sentence

construction, and other technical skills are necessary. And with this, it

will enhance their English writing skills.

Since ESP is language teaching that is tailored to the specific

learning and language usage, researchers will be able to know their

needs and will be able to address what they specifically need.

Teachers of ESP on the other hand will be aware of these things. This

also gives opportunity to the researchers to develop their language

usage, fluency and proficiency. Thus, if you will relate this to what

interviewers can learn, they can actually gain relevant information in

language usage pertaining to their future field.

Ms. Mary Ann "Meg" Aviles is an entrepreneur working as the

owner and the head barista of 250° cafe for almost 2 years.

Furthermore, she is the owner of the Healthy Home Water Station in

Calamba and at the same time, a digital marketing consultant. She

graduated from University of Santo Tomas with a bachelor’s degree in

legal management. Ms. Meg has taken up coffee enhancement skills

program in The Specialty Coffee Association focusing on advance

barista brewing and sensoring, and is now a certified Intermediate

Barista and Brewer.

As a master barista, Ms. Meg believes that their cafe is committed

to continuous coffee learnings to provide great quality coffee to the

Laguna community. 250° cafe is not just a cafe or a restaurant for

them, it is their humbly abode.

Interviewer 1: “So, good evening, ma’am. And we are

students from City College of Calamba taking up Bachelor

of Science in Accountancy. And one of our courses is

English for Specific Purposes. So we were tasked to have an

interview with one of the professions which is a barista and

now we were (are) going to ahm, ask you few questions

about your profession. So ma’am, how would you want us to

address you?”

Mary Ann “Meg” Aviles: “Meg. Ah, just call me Meg.”

Interviewer 1: “Meg?”

Mary Ann “Meg” Aviles: “Meg.”

Interviewer 1: “So, uhm, can you please introduce yourself,

ma’am?”

Mary Ann “Meg” Aviles: “Yeah, my name is Meg. Ah, I’m 34 years

old. How long have been… I’ve been working as a barista?

Ah, about two years. And ah also… actually not two years

eh. Ah, 250 café is more than a year eh so… yeah, more

than a year.”

Interviewer 1: “Ahm, may I ask what degree in college have

you taken up and where was it?”

Mary Ann “Meg” Aviles: “Me, ahm, I’ve taken up legal management

in UST, but being a barista, I’ve taken up ah, speciality

coffee association, ahm so that’s ah, focusing on barista,

advanced barista brewing and sensoring.”

Interviewer 1: “Ah, ma’am may I ask, what made you decide

to be in this industry? Knowing, ah, as you have said earlier,

ahm, you finished legal management and what made you

decide to take another ah, subjects or units about special….

speciality in coffee or brewing?”

Mary Ann “Meg” Aviles: “Because I love coffee. Yeah so I pursued

and then studied coffee.”

Interviewer 1: “So out of many cafes here in Calamba, why

did you choose 250 café?”

Mary Ann “Meg” Aviles: “Because this is our home. This is our

home converted into a café slash restaurant.”

Interviewer 1: “Ahm, may I ask have you ever had a job

aside from being a barista?”

Mary Ann “Meg” Aviles: “Yes.”

Interviewer 1: “Ahm, what was it, ma’am?”

Mary Ann “Meg” Aviles: “Ah, I’m an entrepreneur so ah, I own a

water station which is here, healthy home water station,

250 café, and I’m also a digital marketing consultant.”

Interviewer 1: “Ahm, based on your experiences, what’s with

being a barista that makes it different from other jobs?

What makes it exceptional?”

quality coffee so we also communicate with the customers

and providing them good service.”

language in your work place?”

Mary Ann “Meg” Aviles: “Yes.”

Interviewer 2: “So, how often do you speak English while

working?”

Mary Ann “Meg” Aviles: “Ahm, of course with coffee we use English

terminologies, okay so we have to speak English in order

for us to, ahm, ah, efficiently manage the operations.”

Interviewer 2: ”So are there many customers who ask about

the process of making coffee?”

Mary Ann “Meg” Aviles: “Yes.”

Interviewer 2: “So what particular situation have you

applied speaking English like in everyday work?”

Mary Ann “Meg” Aviles: “When, ah, taking orders, ahm, talking to

the customers, because, ahm, as much as we want to, ahm,

appear, syempre we want to appear professional so we

communicate in English, but still, we, we check if the

customer wants to speak in tagalog. Of course, we need to

adjust.”

Interviewer 2: “So are you obliged to speak in English in your

everyday work?”

Mary Ann “Meg” Aviles: “No naman, yeah, especially here in

Calamba.”

Interviewer 2: “So when is the best time to speak in English in

your workplace? Do you have foreign customers or mostly

English-speaking people who visit the coffee shop?”

Mary Ann “Meg” Aviles: “Yeah, ah, foreign customers, ah,

balikbayan and ah, mostly, ah mga professionals.”

Interviewer 2: "So, does (do) your clients converse with you in

English as well?”

Mary Ann “Meg” Aviles: “Yes.”

Interviewer 2: “Was there a time that you had a difficulty in

performing your job because of language barriers?”

Mary Ann “Meg” Aviles: “In English?”

Interviewer 2: “Yes po.”

Mary Ann “Meg” Aviles: “No.”

Mary Ann “Meg” Aviles: “But ah, if our customers are Europeans.

So like a German, kasi we also have customers here from

ano eh, from Austria, Germany, ah, who married Filipina

Calambeños. So for them it’s not ahm, easy for them to

speak English. For me it’s okay coz I can converse in

English but for these Europeans they are having a hard

time so I speak, speak to them in basic.”

Interviewer 2: “Basic English po?”

Mary Ann “Meg” Aviles: *nods

Interviewer 2: “So does English language enable you to

express your ideas properly?”

Mary Ann “Meg” Aviles: "Yes.”

Interviewer 2: “So if you would imagine, would it be better for

you if you are proficient in English language or not?”

Mary Ann “Meg” Aviles: “It can be better.”

Interviewer 2: “So specifically po in your work, ahm, the, ahm,

does speaking in English necessary or not really?”

Mary Ann “Meg” Aviles: “It is necessary.”

Interviewer 2: “So do fluency and proficiency in English help you

build relationship with your clients?”

Interviewer 2: “If you were to choose, would you prefer English

or not?”

Mary Ann “Meg” Aviles: “Ah, when, when, ahm, when we talk to the

customers, ahm just so we present ourselves professional

specially if we ask what kind of coffee they like and then,

when, whenever, ah, ah, I explain the process how we brew

the coffee, it’s better to communicate in English. Because,

ahm, English, through ahm English, we can actually use

these terminologies eh, ah coffee terminologies,

professional coffee terminologies.”

Interviewer 2: “So what do you think are your strengths and

weaknesses when it comes to the usage of English?”

Mary Ann “Meg” Aviles: “Strength when it comes to usage of

English? What do you mean?”

Interviewer 1: “Like ah, do you have ah, ahm, wide

vocabulary? Ah, you don’t have, you don’t find it hard in

sentence construction?”

Mary Ann “Meg” Aviles: “No naman, coz, ahm, I’m a college

graduate and I’m experienced naman in hospitality

industry.”

Interviewer 1: “Well, how can English help you

professionally? Like in terms of social skills,

communication, analysis and or decision-making?”

Mary Ann “Meg” Aviles: “Decision-making, not much. But ahm

communicating to customers, ahm, specially if you’re

leading a team, coz you have to ahm, effectively

communicate yourself, ah, professionally. Also

communicating to the customers. Especially if our

customers are young professionals. Of course we want to

present want to present ourselves as also professional that

we deliver good service and quality… We know our

product, we know our coffee, we know our food.”

Interviewer 1: “Ahm, does English language improve your

career opportunities?”

Mary Ann “Meg” Aviles: “Yes, somehow.”

Interviewer 1: “Ahm, in what way, ma’am?”

Mary Ann “Meg” Aviles: “Ahm, when creating processes, creating

rules and regulations in managing the café, I draft it in

English. When creating ah, cases, ahm, anything that’s

work-related, the documents, we use English.”

Interviewer 1: “Ahm, why do you think it is important to be

proficient and fluent in English? Does it give you an

advantage or sense of fulfillment?”

Mary Ann “Meg” Aviles: “Hmm, it has an advantage, but it’s not,

ahm, it’s not the ah, what’s this, it’s not the only, ahm,

what’s this? Ahm, skills that we need. It’s just a part of it,

so that we can communicate because communication is

very important. In the business, ahm, in anything that we

do, communication is important so…”

Interviewer 1: “Ahm, how far should you know in using this

language as far as you field is concern?”

Mary Ann “Meg” Aviles: “How far should we know, well, with

coffee, we have continuous study, and ahm, studying coffee

we use English coz ahm, coffee is global. So it’s ahm, we

study English, every, like, professionals are everywhere in

the like, Europe, US, Australia so ahm, Speciality Coffee

Association, ahm it’s actually a school. All their, all their

trainers, ah, they use English even they are Europeans or

Italians, we use English.”

Interviewer 1: “Ahm, lastly, how is ushe…usage,

proficiency, and fluency of English language develop you as

a person, and as a, as a professional or as a barista?”

Mary Ann “Meg” Aviles: “How is.. it helps a lot. It’s mostly used for,

ah, for communication.”

Interviewer 1: “Ah, ma’am, ma’am Meg, thank you for this

fruitful conversation with you. It was such a pleasure to be

having this opportunity of talking with you. And before we

end this, may we ask for a few words of wisdom from you

that you think may be meaningful for others.”

Mary Ann “Meg” Aviles: “Words of wisdom…ahm, English is an

important language to learn, but ahm it’s not the only,

well, because some people if ahm if ah they notice that a

person is very good in English it’s already equivalent to

knowledge. No, ahm not really. Coz ahm it’s just a ahm, a

skill, yeah it’s just a part of it but it’s not it’s not the,

indication that the person is ahm already ah full of wisdom.

Always ahm, ah refer to the substance not the, not just

English.”

Chapter 4

Summary

The students were tasked to conduct an interview with a specific

profession. They were challenged to have an interview with a barista

with the goal of knowing how essential English is on their field of

work. The findings are summarized as follows:

1. Being a barista is not just about serving quality coffee but also

communicating with the customers and providing them good

service;

2. Learning coffee brewing is a continuous process and is being

learned from different parts of the world;

3. Baristas communicate in English in order to present themselves as

professionals;

4. English is being used in professional coffee terminologies and in

explaining coffee processes to efficiently manage the operations

and;

5. English proficiency is a skill that people need but is not the sole

standard in identifying one’s intelligence and wiseness.

Conclusion

Based on the findings summarized above, the researchers can

therefore conclude that:

1. English in terms of communication is a vital ingredient in

building relationship with other people. Service would not be effective

without the presence of proper communication in the workplace. It is

deemed proven that providing utmost service will leave a mark of

comfort and appreciation to the heart of the customers.

2. It is apparently observed that English language is a necessity in

this profession. This will help every barista to present and stand

themselves with confidence. English communication gives power and

influence wherein you can be an effective speaker.

3. English is indeed extensively used in business undertakings and

activities in a manner that will help the organization to achieve their

vision. Also, this account establishes that English language has its

specification when it comes to different field. This greatly affect the

overall performance of the organization and the professionals as well.;

4. English is essential for a barista because of the jargons

associated only with special coffee terminologies that are explained in

English that they need to fully understand in order for them to

efficiently manage the day to day operation of the business. Also, the

terms consociated with the instructions about the processes on how to

use the machineries and equipment when it comes to grinding and

brewing of coffee beans in order for them to craft the best coffee are

presented in English. With that, a barista should be knowledgeable

about the English language for it is needed in the entire operation of

the business.

5. English is necessary in every field. It is an important skill that

everyone must possess but it should never be an indication of one's

extremes and limits. It should rather be a booster of one's confidence

to face the professional world with the goal of improving one's self to

be a competent professional who can be at par with other

professionals from around the world.

Professionals often use this language as their medium of

expression mostly with everyone for they know that it is the universal

language and is a factor of presenting themselves as professionals.

For them to perform their job better, communication is one of the

elements they need to consider. And being proficient and fluent in

English, help them communicate well with their colleagues, and of

course their beloved customers or clients.

As for baristas, most of their customers are professionals - people

with outstanding educational attainment and are used to interact with

people, that’s why the possibility of encountering foreign and English-

speaking customers is very much likely to happen. Furthermore, the

jargons that baristas use are all written in English. With this, being

familiar with English terminologies help them identify and recognize

the ingredients and processes in brewing coffees and other beverages

they offer to their customers. Thus, they admit, that English is

significant in performing their job better.

Making your life a lot easier than you think is far more

satisfying than having a blueberry cheesecake on your plate. Like

carrying a task, it is easier if you will stay calm and cool. Imagine

doing a job without your heart and dedication into it, you will be

messed up.

What Ms. Meg said gave me a pang of realization, that, being in

this line is not just about having a title but it is about loving what you

are doing. It is not just about studying number, analyzing transactions

but also about loving and embracing your field.

It is boiled down into this realization, carrying out an

assignment takes a lot of effort and patience. Starting from planning

process down to last minute changes, everything takes courage.

My professor once said, ‘you did pursue this line so you should

withstand every challenges that are linked with this’.

In addition, Ms Meg said that English is just a skill. I have come

to realized that English language is just a skill and it is about the

substance that we are after. Also this is not the basis of intelligence.

This is just some insights Ms. meg shared. After doing this, I

also realize that regardless of our nationality, we have to learn

English, it’s techniques and other aspects for us to be well versed and

equipped in our future endeavour.

This line captured my attention because we all know that being

fluent in English language makes us look more professional. As what

Ms. Meg said, if she use English language, she present herself more

confident and presentable to others. Also, it is advantageous to use

English language in her profession because most of the terminologies

in coffee is in English language. So, using English language is vital in

every barista. With this, we can easily explain to the customers the

process and ingredients of the coffee that they serve. There is a

smooth flow of communication and we can express what we want to

say.

In line with this, most of the customers in every coffee shop are

professionals so we can expect English-speaking customers. So for

Ms. Meg it is better to communicate in English to have a better

understanding. I highly agree with her to use more English language

to have a better and open communication. Communication is the key

in every profession.

This line of Ms. Mary Ann Aviles, “It has an advantage, but it’s

not the only skills that we need. It’s just a part of it, so that we can

communicate because communication is very important.”, made me

realize that English language is essential when it comes to the work of

an individual in different field even in the job that are not require

deep communication. Especially in this 21st Century, being fluent and

proficient in English communication can be an edge of anyone in

terms of being accepted in jobs and efficiently doing the work. But not

being good in communicating English doesn’t mean that a person is

not capable enough to perform well in studies and in work but being

good in English communication can create a bigger opportunity for

everyone to prosper and to grow as a people and as a professional.

Moreover, as a future accountant, English communication is

very essential for me because I should possess good communication

skills to be efficient in work because the work required the

preparation and analysis of financial reports, presentation of it to the

management, and to listen to the feedback of the management about

the reports. Basically, English for Specific Purposes could bring big

help to me because it focuses on the language development of a

student to prepare them for the battle in the workplace.

In connection with the above mentioned statement, it only

proves that English is very essential when it comes to work-related

activities as a professional. I have realized that using the English

language is one of the integral part of becoming a professional. It is

not just for communication purposes but also in terms of the specific

profession a person is taking. Like for example, recipes and

procedures in producing or making beverages are written in English,

so it would be understood by everyone from different nations. In

relation with this to my future profession as a Certified Public

Accountant, English is also used in making financial statements,

reports and other documents for it be accurate and be more effective

when delivering it to all the constituents. Because when an

accountant incorrectly put the accounts in the financial statements,

the financial statements can not be said to be in accordance with what

is actually recorded. And when it happens, it means that it can be said

that an accountant has manipulated the financial statements.

English is very important for an accountant in doing financial

reports. If an accountant is not that proficient with this language, it

can make him/her unreliable. In the current generation. It is

impossible if we don’t know the English Language. In addition to this,

English as the lingua franca, has become one of the instruments in

seeking for a job. I came up with the idea that someone who has

expertise in the English language has a merit of insight. But not

infrequently, we find people who want to be able to speak English but

it is difficult to learn it. But, as we know in learning the English

language, the most important thing is to dare to try it. Because if we

dare to try it then we will get the maximum value later on. This

activity surely helped me to be more familiarized with the objectives

of ESP and how it can contribute to me as a student and as a

professional near future. It is not enough to just learn about English,

we should know the application of it as well as the implication of

English in the real world.

Ms. Meg is precisely correct in saying that they are not just

after the quality coffee they make and serve, they also want to make

their customers feel cared and loved when visiting the coffee shop. It

is apparent enough for them to provide good service because that is

what most business is doing, what sets them apart from others is the

way they impart comfort whenever their customers would order

coffee. It is a good indication of professionalism when someone is

concerned in having a firm relationship with the customers. That

became possible through the help of proper communication in the

workplace. Communication is a vital tool to create a passageway for

mutual understanding and adequate connections with prospects and

comrades.

Indeed, English took a big role in building a good relationship

with customers because most of the people can understand the

language and is used to communicate with others as well. She also

said that when they attend to the needs of their customers, they do

not just barely talk to them but they listen and understand them

which is important in a communication process. English has been

used when making conversation in the workplace so Ms. Meg used it

to their advantage to enable their business prosper and be known to

the mass as a business which care and give customers utmost service.

In addition, this also implies that they want to give the best service

that their customers would take.

Melvin Brian Fernando

English is essential in the professional world. That is what

English for Specific Purposes focuses on. It teaches the difference

from learning English at school and the actual usage of English at

work. Through the process of preparation up to the interview with a

professional, I was able to realize that English is, indeed, necessary in

the workplace.

After our interview, I was able to reflect on what our

interviewee said that, "English is not really necessary in decision-

making but it is on communication. It is very important to effectively

communicate yourself, not only to the customers but most importantly

to your coworkers."

Being able to express yourself with your coworkers and get to

understand both sides is essential in every workplace. It is very

important that everyone's goals are aligned with the goals of the

business and it can only be met when it is communicated well. By

having the same goals, every worker will be an efficient asset to the

business as it aims to reach success. Also, by effectively

communicating with the customers, we can be able to widen our

network which will be very beneficial in the future as it builds

relationships. So, we can say that one's efficiency in a specific

profession can be maximized by using the English language

effectively.
