Female Foeticide

Female Foeticide has been a centuries-old practice in India causing imbalance in sex
ratio. Selection of the sex of the foetus is a combination of personal choices, family
issues, social, ethical, medical and even legal reasons. Child is part of the society,
which idolizes sons. This stems from the deep rooted ancient concept of having a son to
carry on with the name and tradition of the family. Right from childhood, girls are made
to accept the norms of patriarchal and male dominated society. It is unfortunate that our
society considers ‘male’ as the bread winner for the family, and therefore a more
valuable asset than a girl child, who is looked upon as a liability in the family. Dowry
system is the root cause of female foeticide. Thus, proper measures should be taken to
implement anti dowry law.

In India foeticde, specially female foticide, and sex selection is in worst condition. It
tends to be a serious decline in sex ratio in many states of India. One side where we are
promoting literacy in our country on other hand a stripe of well educated and financially
strong people are found to be more involved in this heinous crime. However, the Govt.
had banned to sex selection, but couples, who do not want to bear girl child, find the
way anyhow. Also the practitioners easily get involved in this crime in greed of huge
amount offered by parents as a bribe. It shows the clear picture of Indian male
dominancy. Female are the backbone of a Nation. Without maternity existence of world
is impossible. So why should we think to kill the generator of humanity.
Why people do not want to bear girl child? According to a Hindu myth to drive a dynasty
existence of a son in family is necessary. People think bearing one girl child is enough
or necessarily at least they should have one male child. With the fear of the second
child not to be a girl they undergo the process of sex selection or pre-natal sex
determination to confirm either it is girl or boy. They do not want to take any chance to
have second girl child. In the previous years when technologies were not so advance
and sex determination before birth was impossible, we can see, in India, many parents
having 5 to 7 daughters. They did not stop production until a boy born. It means out of
all the offspring the youngest one is a male child, it reveals the value of males in Indian
society. The son is expected to look after his parents after growing up, he earn for them
and give a backup of what parents had expended from him. In some parts of India boys
are thought to be the source of a huge amount as dowry. On other hand educating a
girl child does not reward parents, her earning benefits her husband family, and lifetime
earning of parents goes in the hands of husband as dowry. So every effort done for girl
child go vain. That’s naturally happens in Indian society. Giving birth to a girl child means
parents will have to buy a groom for her when she grows to the age of marriage.
Unless parents stop looking at their children from the economic perspective, the bias
against women will never go.
To combat this problem roots have to be cutted first. A fixed strategy is required
nationalwide, for the removal of dowry system. Determined implementation of the
antidowary act is necessary.
