BEST PRACTICES AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ORACLE ZFS STORAGE APPLIANCE SYSTEMS AND VEEAM BACKUP & REPLICATION 9.5
Introduction
The Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance family of storage products provides extreme performance for
backup environments. With the introduction of Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance software release
OS8.7.0, customers can take advantage of one of the best storage data deduplication implementations
available on the market along with one of the best compression algorithms, the LZ4 compression
algorithm. The new data deduplication feature combined with the new LZ4 compression algorithm
ensures a high level of data reduction for backup environments, as well as cost reduction to end users.

This white paper provides best practices and recommendations for configuring Veeam Backup &
Replication 9.5 with Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance systems to reach optimal I/O performance and
throughput of backup and restore operations in virtualized environments. The outlined best practices
and recommendations highlight advanced settings for Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 software to
properly interface with the Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance data deduplication feature, the compression
algorithm, the Server Message Block version 3 (SMB3) protocol, the Fibre Channel protocol, and the
iSCSI protocol.

In addition, this paper also includes recommendations for the data profile, storage layout, and use
cases of backup and restore operations for Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance systems, as well as key
settings to ensure the high availability and resilience of Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 software with
Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance systems.

dual 10 GbE NIC or one onboard 10 gigabit Ethernet (GbE) port per Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance controller to
be used as standalone 10 GbE IP network interfaces

Note: Support for all-flash storage pools was introduced with Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance software release
OS8.7.0. However, an all-flash configuration is not supported and not intended to be used within backup
environments with Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance systems. Only traditional 10,000 RPM or 7,200 RPM disks are
officially supported and intended to be used as primary storage for backup solutions and environments with Oracle
ZFS Storage Appliance systems.

Figure 1 illustrates recommended configurations for Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance controllers 1 and 2 for Veeam
Backup & Replication with SMB3, Fibre Channel, and iSCSI protocols.

Storage Layout Recommendation for Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5

Backup solutions require storage devices that can provide fast response time, low latency, bandwidth, and
performance. Therefore, to properly accommodate workloads demanded by backup applications running inside of
the virtual machines (VMs) as well as the throughput and performance needed, the recommended storage data
profile for Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 deployments with Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance systems is double-
parity RAID.

Listed below are the storage layout recommendations for small, medium, and large backup environments for Veeam
Backup & Replication 9.5 software with Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance systems.

For small-size backup environments with Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 software and an Oracle ZFS Storage
Appliance system, the storage layout recommendation is the following:

» An Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance system configured with a double-parity RAID data profile. A double-parity RAID
data profile will provide better performance for backup and restore operations with a Veeam Backup & Replication
environment.
» At least forty-four 8 TB (7,200 RPM Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance capacity disks) and two Oracle Storage Drive
Enclosure DE3-24C disk enclosures.
» At least two SSDs for log devices (configured as a striped log profile; one per Oracle Storage Drive Enclosure
DE3-24C disk enclosure).
» At least two SSDs for deduplication data table DDT meta devices (configured as a striped metaprofile; one per
Oracle Storage Drive Enclosure DE3-24C disk enclosure).
Figure 2 illustrates the recommended storage layout configuration for small-size backup environments using Veeam
Backup & Replication 9.5 software with VMware vSphere 6.0 and an Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance system as the
backup source and target.

Note: VMware vSphere does not support SMB3 datastores; therefore, the SMB3 protocol should not be used as a
VMware datastore. Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance software release OS8.7.0 and later supports the new NFS
protocol version 4.1. So, NFS versions 3 or 4.1, iSCSI, or Fibre Channel protocols can be used by VMware as VM
production repositories or by a Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 repository.

Note: For VMware vSphere 6.0 or Microsoft Hyper-V 2012 R2 or 2016 platforms, Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5
should be installed on a Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 or Microsoft Windows Server 2016 VM. For better
performance, SMB3 shares, iSCSI LUNs, or Fibre Channel LUNs should bypass the hypervisor layer, and should be

3 | BEST PRACTICES AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ORACLE ZFS STORAGE APPLIANCE SYSTEMS AND VEEAM BACKUP & REPLICATION 9.5
directly mounted (for SMB3 share) or formatted (for iSCSI or Fibre Channel LUNs) on the Windows 2012 R2 or
Windows 2016 VM. If the iSCSI protocol has been chosen to be used by Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 software
as the transport protocol for the Veeam backup repository, then Microsoft iSCSI Software Initiator should be
installed and configured on the Windows 2012 R2 or Windows 2016 VMs. If the Fibre Channel protocol has been
chosen, then raw device mapping (RDM) should be configured on the hypervisor layer to allow the Fibre Channel
LUNs to be presented, mounted, and formatted inside of the Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 VM.

Backup & Replication 9.5 software with Microsoft Windows Hyper-V 2012 R2 or Windows 2016 and an Oracle ZFS
Storage Appliance system as the backup source and target.

Note: Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance software release OS8.7.0 and later supports the SMB3 protocol. Therefore,
the SMB3, iSCSI, or Fibre Channel protocols can be used by Microsoft Hyper-V 2012 R2 or Windows 2016 as VM
production repositories or by a Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 repository.

Microsoft Hyper-V 2012 R2 or 2016 releases and an Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance system

For medium-size backup environments with Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 software and an Oracle ZFS Storage
Appliance system, the storage layout recommendation is the following:

» An Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance system configured with a double-parity RAID data profile
» At least ninety-two 8 TB (7,200 RPM Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance capacity disks) and four Oracle Storage
Drive Enclosure DE3-24C disk enclosures
» At least two SSDs for log devices (configured as a striped log profile; one per Oracle Storage Drive Enclosure

Figure 4. Recommended storage layout for a medium-size backup environment using Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 software
with VMware vSphere 6.0 and an Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance system

For large-size backup environments with Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 software and an Oracle ZFS Storage
Appliance system, the storage layout recommendation is the following:
» An Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance system configured with a double-parity RAID data profile
» At least one hundred eighty-four 8 TB (7,200 RPM Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance capacity disks) and eight
Oracle Storage Drive Enclosure DE3-24C disk enclosures
» At least four 200 GB SSDs for log devices (configured as a striped log profile; one per Oracle Storage Drive
Enclosure DE3-24C disk enclosure)
» At least four 3.2 TB SSDs for DDT meta devices (configured as a striped metaprofile; one per Oracle Storage
Drive Enclosure DE3-24C disk enclosure)

IP Network Settings
For network configuration, both IPMP and LACP IEEE 802.3ad bonding mode are recommended for the deployment
of Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 software with Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance systems. IPMP provides physical
interface failure detection, increase reliability, and mainly network performance for systems with multiple interfaces.
LACP IEEE 802.3ad provides a method that combines the capacity of multiple full-duplex Ethernet links into a single
logical link, which increases bandwidth by aggregating existing datalinks, load balancing inbound and outbound
network traffic, and providing automatic failover/failback traffic from a failed link over to working links in the
aggregation. These two technologies complement each other, and can be deployed together to provide benefits for
network performance, bandwidth, and high availability for Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 environments with
Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance systems.

For the LACP configuration, ensure that the Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance 10 GbE network interfaces, IP switches,
and VMware vSphere 6.0 or Microsoft Hyper-V 2012 R2 or 2016 servers are correctly configured with the following
LACP policies:

7 | BEST PRACTICES AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ORACLE ZFS STORAGE APPLIANCE SYSTEMS AND VEEAM BACKUP & REPLICATION 9.5
» Configure the LACP policy L3 on Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance systems and IP network switches.
» Configure the LACP active mode on Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance systems and IP network switches.
» Configure the LACP short timer interval on Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance systems and IP network switches.
» Ensure that the NIC teaming configuration is correctly configured on VMware vSphere 6.0 and Microsoft
Hyper-V 2012 R2 or 2016.
Note: NIC teaming configuration for VMware vSphere 6.0 and Microsoft Hyper-V 2012 R2 or 2016 is beyond the
scope of this white paper. Refer to the following links for additional information:

» kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1004088
» For all 10 GbE network interfaces used by the VMware vSphere 6.0 and Microsoft Hyper-V environments, ensure
that 9,000 maximum transmission unit (MTU) jumbo frames are enabled on Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance 10
GbE network interfaces and IP switches and also on VMware ESXi hosts and Microsoft Hyper-V servers.
» Ensure that VMware VMkernel and Microsoft Hyper-V 2012 R2 or 2016 allow 9,000 MTU jumbo frames. For

Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 Backup Server Recommendations

The Veeam Backup & Replication server is the principal component of the Veeam Backup & Replication
infrastructure, and it performs all types of backup administrative tasks, such as backup and job scheduling, backup

9 | BEST PRACTICES AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ORACLE ZFS STORAGE APPLIANCE SYSTEMS AND VEEAM BACKUP & REPLICATION 9.5
and restore configurations and policies, management of the Veeam Backup & Replication global infrastructure, and
also replication tasks. The Veeam Backup & Replication server can be installed either in a bare-metal Windows
installation server (physical machine) or on a Windows VM.

Installation of Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 software is beyond the scope of this document. Refer to Veeam
Backup & Replication 9.5 documentation at the following link:

Veeam Backup & Replication Backup Proxy Recommendations

Veeam Backup & Replication Proxy can be installed in a bare-metal Windows installation server (physical machine),
or on a Windows VM. Its primary role is to enable efficient data transfer and an optimal route for backup traffic. In
addition, Veeam Backup Proxy servers are extremely important because they allow scalability (up and down) of the
entire backup infrastructure, they runs lightweight services, and they are easy to deploy.

On a Windows-based server platform (physical or virtual), all required components of a Veeam Backup Proxy server
are automatically installed during the backup proxy configuration phase (when a backup proxy is added to the
Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 console).

Listed below are the recommendations for the Veeam Backup & Replication Backup Proxy server configuration with
Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance systems:

10 | BEST PRACTICES AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ORACLE ZFS STORAGE APPLIANCE SYSTEMS AND VEEAM BACKUP & REPLICATION 9.5
» For small backup environments, a Veeam Backup Proxy can be installed along with the Veeam Backup &
Replication VM or physical server. However, in large-scale environments, the workload on a Veeam Backup
Proxy server can be significant. So, it is recommended to install a dedicated VM or physical server as the Veeam
Backup Proxy role to avoid overload on the Veeam Backup & Replication server.
Note: Ensure that at least one Windows VM has been correctly configured and is available to be assigned as the
Veeam Backup Proxy role.
» Veeam Backup Proxy VMs can reside in either a VMware or Hyper-V infrastructure.
» Due to potential performance degradation of the backup environment, do not assign the role of a backup proxy
working in the Direct SAN access mode to a VM. Direct SAN is strongly recommended for backup proxy server
configurations deployed as physical machines.
» The Veeam Backup Proxy role needs to be assigned to a VM.
» Virtual appliance mode uses VMware SCSI HotAdd technology. Then, the data from the VM is retrieved and
written (directly) from and to the VMware datastore, instead of using the network infrastructure (LAN-free data
transfer).
» Virtual appliance transport mode is the recommended transport mode for Veeam Backup Proxy configurations
installed on a VM. In a VM environment, virtual appliance mode provides better performance and throughput
rather than Veeam Backup Proxy Network mode.
» To ensure better performance, Veeam Backup Proxy VMs must have the latest release of VMware Tools
installed.
» For better performance, and as part of the same backup infrastructure, several Veeam Backup Proxy can be
installed. In this case, Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 software will properly distribute the workload between all
available Veeam Backup Proxy VMs.
The example below illustrates the configuration of a Veeam Backup Proxy VM in a VMware vSphere environment.

Assuming that the VMware vSphere 6.0 environment and at least a Windows 2012 R2 or Windows 2016 VM have
been correctly installed and are available to be assigned as a Veeam Backup Proxy VM, follow the steps below:

From the Veeam Backup & Replication GUI, click the Backup Infrastructure tab, right-click Backup Proxies, and
then select Add VMware Backup Proxy. See Figure 10.

At this point, the new Veeam Backup Proxy Windows VM is added to the Veeam Backup & Replication GUI, and it
can be used as part of the backup infrastructure.

Note: The steps illustrated above are the same for a Microsoft Hyper-V 2012 R2 or 2016 environment. However,
instead of selecting the Add VMware Backup Proxy option, select the Add Hyper-V Off-Host Backup Proxy
option. See figure 10, and follow the same step-by-step instructions above.

Veeam Backup & Replication Backup Repository Recommendations

The Veeam backup repository is basically a storage location where the backup files of VMs, VM copies, and
replicated metadata reside. Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 software provides different types of backup
repositories; however, the following is the recommended repository type for the Veeam backup repository with an
Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance system:

» A simple backup repository on a Windows platform, where Veeam Backup Proxy Microsoft Windows servers
(physical or virtual) can leverage a local disk or direct-attached disk-based storage from the Oracle ZFS Storage
Appliance system over iSCSI or Fibre Channel LUNs.
» A simple backup repository on a Linux platform, where Veeam Backup Proxy Linux servers (physical or virtual)
can leverage a local disk, direct-attached disk-based storage over iSCSI or Fibre Channel LUNs from an Oracle
ZFS Storage Appliance system, or NFS shares presented from an Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance system.
» A simple backup repository using a CIFS (SMB3) share presented from the Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance
system to the Veeam Backup Proxy Windows VM or directly presented from the Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance
system to the backup infrastructure.

21 | BEST PRACTICES AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ORACLE ZFS STORAGE APPLIANCE SYSTEMS AND VEEAM BACKUP & REPLICATION 9.5
The examples listed in the next two sections illustrate a simple backup repository configuration on a Windows
platform using iSCSI LUNs and a simple backup repository configuration using CIFS (SMB3) directly mounted from
an Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance system.

Simple Backup Repository Using iSCSI Protocol

This section describes the configuration of an Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance system as the backup target for
Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 software using an iSCSI LUN on a Windows 2012 R2 VM platform directly
attached from the Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance system and presented to Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5
software as an iSCSI Veeam backup repository.
» Ensure that the Microsoft iSCSI Software Initiator and Microsoft Multipath I/O features have correctly been
installed and configured on the Windows 2012 R2 or Windows 2016 VM.
Note: Configuration of the Microsoft iSCSI Software Initiator and Microsoft Multipath I/O features are beyond the
scope of this white paper. Refer to the documentation at the following Oracle web page for additional information
regarding best practices and recommendations for Microsoft iSCSI Initiator and Microsoft Multipath I/O with an
Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance system.

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/sun-unified-storage/documentation/index.html
» SMB3 shares, iSCSI or Fibre Channel LUNs presented from an Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance system and
configured as backup repository for Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 software should be directly mounted (for an
SMB3 share) or formatted (for iSCSI or Fibre Channel LUNs) on the Windows 2012 R2 or Windows 2016 VM.
» If Fibre Channel LUNs are used as the backup repository for Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 software, raw
device mapping (RDM) should be configured on the hypervisor layer to allow Fibre Channel LUNs to be
presented, mounted, and formatted inside the Veeam Backup & Replication VM.
» Ensure that the Veeam Backup Proxy Windows 2012 R2 or Windows 2016 VM has a dedicated 10 GbE virtual
NIC (vNIC) to be used by iSCSI LUNs directly presented from an Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance system
(bypassing the hypervisor layer). See Figure 20.
» For best performance, ensure that 9,000 MTU jumbo frames are correctly enabled on the hypervisor side (IP
virtual switch), the IP physical switch, and the Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance 10 GbE interfaces.
For the example with iSCSI LUN shown below, a 1TB iSCSI LUN was formatted as NTFS Windows file systems and
Unit E:\ was used as an iSCSI LUN repository for Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 software.

Note: Ensure that the iSCSI LUN directly attached from the Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance system to the Veeam
Backup Proxy on a Windows 2012 R2 or Windows 2016 VM is correctly formatted with NTFS and a 64 K allocation
unit size.

Figure 20 illustrates an overview of a Veeam Backup Proxy Windows 2012 R2 VM directly attached to an Oracle
ZFS Storage Appliance iSCSI LUN and presented to Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 software as a Veeam backup
repository.

Assuming that Microsoft iSCSI Software Initiator and Microsoft Multipath I/O features are correctly installed and
configured, set up Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance iSCSI LUNs with the following settings:
» Set Volume size to 1 TB.
» Enable the Thin provisioned option.
» Set the Read limit and Write limit bandwidth options to Default.
» Enable the Data deduplication option.

Data Deduplication and the Compression Ratios of Backups

Independent of the protocol utilized by the backup solution (for example, the SMB3, iSCSI, or Fibre Channel
protocols on an Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance system as backup target) Veeam Backup & Replication will provide
more data deduplication rather than compression. This is due to several factors related to the structure of the
backup data set.

Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance systems provide easy access to data deduplication and compression ratio
information. This information can be easily accessed from an Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance system’s browser user
interface (BUI).

Figure 57 illustrates the data deduplication ratio of a Windows 7 VM backup with 1 TB of media and entertainment
(M&E) files.

From the Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance system’s BUI, click Status. Data deduplication and compression ratios are
available at the upper left side of the window. See Figure 57.

Figure 58 illustrates the total data reduction ratios (compression and data deduplication ratios) of 14 backup jobs
and use cases for a Linux VM using Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 software with an Oracle ZFS Storage
Appliance system as the backup target.
