Landscape Horticulture

Step One: Read the project scenario.

Pam with the City of _________ (your choice, think about the location and
climate of the area you are picking) has come to you to redesign the outdoor
area of the local library. The area needs to be visually appealing, have fencing
along the border, have benches, tables/ chairs, and other suitable outdoor
seating, and have abundant plants. Some optional features are (you must
choose one but can do all if you’d like) : water feature, rock features (paths,
stone benches, etc), or a community garden.

Here is a map of the outdoor area:

Step Two: Chose Plants
One of the requirements is to have an abundance of plants. Please research
suitable plants for your chosen location for each of the following categories.
You must pick at least ONE, but may pick more. Please include a picture of
each, why you chose that plant, and how it is compatible with your climate and
location. (You don’t want water reliant plants in Arizona).

Ground Cover and/or Grass (is it soft? water requirements?)

Shrubs (can this be used as a border for fencing rather than fence?)

Trees (for shading, sitting under, will the foliage fall off and be too much
maintenance?):

Floral plants/flowers (what will add to the beauty of the area?):

Step Three: Fencing
Research types of fencing and chose the fence style that best fits the overall
look of your design. Things to take into consideration is privacy, durability, etc.
Upload a photo of the fence type you chose, and why you chose it.

Step Four: Seating
As this is a library, Pam wants it to be an inviting area for people to hangout,
read, and have a snack. At a minimum, There needs to be:
4 Benches
2 tables - 4 chairs each.

Research bench, table, and chair types. Consider different materials, comfort
level, if it will be too hot in the summer. Post a photo of the final idea below
along with an explanation of why you chose it.

Step Five : Pam has requested you include one of the following in the design.
Research each and incorporate at least one of the options below into your
design (you may do more than one if you would like. )

Water Feature- Waterfalls, Ponds, Bird Baths, Fountains, etc.

Rock Feature- Stone pathway, boulder features, stone benches, etc.

Community Garden- A small section of the outdoor area where patrons of the
library can grow plants. This needs to have fencing that will prevent natural
pests in your area.

Step Six: Draw your final design. This drawing needs to be to scale and needs to
include all the components above, including where you are placing the:
Plants
Seating
Tables
Water/Rock Feature and/or Community Garden.

In addition to the drawing, please create a 3-D component for this project such
as your bench, fencing, etc. If you do not have the resources at home please
just draw this component in detail.

This can be done digitally, or by hand. Please use color and label all
components throughout the design.

Note: I encourage you to be creative and have fun while creating your plan.

When you have completed all steps please turn this sheet, along with any
additional attachments you need, into google classroom.
