SECTION 2

New Features in SmartPlant Electrical

SmartPlant Electrical 2015

General
 Plant Operating Cases — SmartPlant Electrical now allows you to perform bus and PDB
load summaries based on various sets of load values. These various sets of load data
(referred here to as plant operating cases) provide the ability to analyze the total electrical
load consumption of your plant based on different load properties and values. Typically,
such operating cases are called Winter, Summer, and so on. However, you can create and
define a number of such operational cases which cover your plant requirements. Also, the
software requires that you set one of the existing operating cases as the governing
operating case and active operating case. These can be different operating cases or the
same operating case.
 Access Rights for the Apply Naming Conventions Command — The Tools > Apply
Naming Conventions command is now available only if the Enable access-right has been
granted by the administrator.
 Tabular Editor Performance Improvement — The software has improved its performance
when copying and pasting multiple rows in the Tabular Editor.

As-Built and Projects

 Scoping and Merging Composite Drawings — You can scope and then merge composite
drawings. This way you automate the scoping and merging processes. Once you scope or
merge a composite drawing, the software automatically scopes and/or merges all the plant
items that are associated with graphical elements on the drawing. Furthermore, the parent
items are also scoped and or merged even if they are not on the composite drawing. For
details and certain merging conditions, see the Project Management in SmartPlant Electrical
section in the User Guide.

New Features in SmartPlant Electrical

Cable Management and Cable Routing

 Defining a Phase Separator for Single-Core Cable Assembly Names — It is now
possible to define a phase separator in the naming conventions of cables belonging to
single-core cable assemblies. In the previous versions of the software, this separator was a
hard-coded back slash. Now, in the new version, you can set the desired phase separator
in the General Settings window of Options Manager. If you do not define a separator, the
software will not insert any separator between the phase suffixes and the cable names.
 Setting a Cable Drop-Off Point in Cable Routing — The software now allows you to set a
cable drop-off point in cable routing by defining the exact length of the cable on a particular
segment. This way you can design your cable routing more efficiently and have a more
accurate actual cable length.
 Excluding Cable Drums-from Cable Assignment — When using the Assign Drums to
Cables wizard, you can now exclude specific drums from the assignment. You can do this
by selecting a filter that specifies drum properties that will make those drums to be excluded
from the assignment.
 Ability to Route Parallel Cables via Different Routes — It is now possible to design the
routing of parallel cables via different routes or the same routes as needed.
 Negative Values in Cable Routing Definition Spare Length Property — You can account
for the point at which the cable exits the cableway segment so that SmartPlant Electrical can
calculate the actual cable length more accurately. To do this, you must enter a negative
value for the Spare length property. The software then deducts this value from the total
length of the routing length. This way the distance between the end of the segment and the
drop off point of the cable is not be included in the Actual length of the cable.
 NEC Tray Fill Validation — When using NEC method (NEC 2011) to validate segment fill,
the software now allows you to assign single-core and multi-core cables to be routed in the
same segment.
 NEC Table 392.10 (A) Update — NEC table 392.10 (A) has been updated according to the
NEC 2011 Handbook. As a result, five additional cable tray width sizes and their
corresponding allowable fill areas have been added.
 Setting the Tag Sequencing Method for Parallel Cables — This feature allows you to
determine how the software will set the tag sequencing of parallel cables in your plant. Two
options are available: identical and consecutive. You determine your setting in Options
Manager.
 Cable Sizing Improvement — The following improvements have been made in cable
sizing:
 When sizing cables, the software filters out from the Cable-Sizing Matrix all the
reference cables whose insulation voltage rating is smaller than the rated voltage of the
current cable. Also, the software does not allow a situation where the insulation voltage
rating is smaller than the rated voltage of a given cable.
 After recalculating the cross-section of a sized cable, the software displays the newly
recommended and currently used cable voltage drop values in dedicated property fields
in the Cable Common Properties. This way you can see the currently used voltage
drop values separately from the recommended values of a given cable.
 When sizing cables connected to instruments or cabinets, the software now inherits the
load data from these instruments and cabinets if they are defined as consumers.

12 SmartPlant Electrical Release Bulletin

New Features in SmartPlant Electrical

 Replacing the Reference Cable of Terminated Cables — If a plant cable has been
terminated, the software no longer restricts the replacement of the associated reference
cable as long as the conductor arrangement of the reference cable stays the same. As a
result, it is now possible to resize a terminated cable using a replaced reference cable.
These conditions apply to single cables, parallel cables, and single-core cable assemblies.
 Single-Core Cable Assemblies for DC Connections — The software now allows you to
create single-core cable assemblies that are suitable for DC connections.
 Single-Core Cable Assemblies for AC Single-Phase Connections — The software now
allows you to create single-core cable assemblies for AC single-phase circuits.
 Changing the Formation of Existing Single-Core Cable Assemblies — It is now possible
to change the formation of existing single-core cable assemblies by adding or deleting the
constituent neutral and grounding cables in the Single-Core Assembly Common
Properties dialog box.
 Synchronizing Plant and Reference Cable Data — You can now instruct the software to
synchronize plant and reference cable data based on your selections of cable properties that
you want to be synchronized. This includes all the shipped properties as well as
user-defined ones.
 Replacing an Associated Reference Cable with a Reference Single-Core Cable
Assembly — In addition to being able to replace the associated reference cable with
another reference cable, you can now replace the associated reference cable of plant power
cables with a reference single-core cable assembly.
 Dissociating Power Cables in Batch Mode — The Batch Cable Side and Gland
Associations dialog box now allows you to dissociate multiple power cables that you
selected in the Tabular Editor or Electrical Index. This operation is performed in batch
mode for all the selected power cables.
 Saving the Cable Length Value — The software now saves to the database the calculated
Cable length value on the Design Data tab of the Cable Common Properties dialog box.
As a result, when publishing cable data, the software now also publishes Cable length
values.
 Performance Improvement — The following performance improvement has been made
when working with cables:
 There has been an improvement in the software performance when comparing and
updating reference cables with a number of plant cables in the Electrical Index.
 There has been a substantial improvement in the performance of batch cable side and
gland association. The software now uses a better transaction mechanism which has
improved the performance. As a result, the Speed up association check box has been
removed from the dialog box since this check box has become redundant.
 Sorting Reference Cables in the Cable Common Properties — You can now sort the list
of reference cables in the Cable common Properties dialog box alphabetically and as well
as by cable size.
 Omitting Parallel Cable Separators — You can now omit a separator in the naming
conventions of parallel cables. In the previous versions of the software, when defining a
separator for parallel cables in the General Settings window of Options Manager, you had
to enter a character to define the separator. Now the software allows you to leave it blank if
do not need a separator.

SmartPlant Electrical Release Bulletin 13

New Features in SmartPlant Electrical

Documents
 Document Title — A new property has been added to the Document Properties dialog
box. This is a required field which is necessary for publishing the document to SmartPlant
Foundation. The software fills this property automatically with the value displayed under
Document number. You can replace this text with another alphanumeric string as you see
fit. If this property is left blank, the current document will not be published.
 Showing the Name of the Active Operating Case — It is now possible to display the
name of the active operating case in your reports and title blocks of conventional drawings.

Drawings
 Composite Drawings — SmartPlant Electrical now enables you to create a new drawing
category that can contain several different types of drawing elements. For example, a
composite drawing can contain SLD, schematics, and wiring diagram elements. The
functionality includes an wide range of free sketch commands, creation of smart graphics by
using symbols and a labels and associating these symbols with plant items.
 Title Blocks in Composite Drawings — There are three new macros for composite
drawing title blocks:
 Sheet Name
 Sheet Order (z of y)
 Total Number of Sheets
You can add these macros when creating a title block. For details, see Catalog Manager
User Guide > Working with Symbols > Creating Symbols > Define a New Title Block Label.
 Reversing the Order of Revisions in Title Blocks — You can now reverse the order of
revisions in the title block starting with the latest revision at the top of the list and the oldest
revision at the bottom. If there aren't enough title block cells for all the revisions, only the
latest revisions will show up. If there is only one revision, it will appear in the lowest cell of
the title block. For details on how to implement this feature, see Catalog Manager User
Guide >Working with Symbols > Creating Symbols > Change the Order of Revisions in a
Title Block.
 External Graphics Files — The software now allows you open an external drawing (for
example, a MicroStation or an AutoCAD file), copy its contents or just one drawing element,
and then paste it in a composite drawing.
 Enterprise Templates — The software is now shipped with special templates called
Enterprise templates. These templates are mainly intended for the use with composite
drawings and they are compatible with other SmartPlant applications. You can, however,
use Enterprise templates with conventional drawings.

 Space Heaters in Cable Block Diagrams — It is now possible to place on a cable block
diagram an electrical item that is connected to one or more space heaters. These space
heaters will be represented in the drawing by the associated symbol.
 Cable Block Diagram Performance Improvement — When placing and connecting a
cable in an open CBD, the software turns on the connection points on the symbol of the valid
equipment to which you drag the cable and not on all valid equipment symbols. Also, the
connection points are turned on only when the dragged cable gets very close to or hovers
over the equipment symbol. This new change in the behavior of the software makes
connecting cables in CBDs more efficient.
 Batch Dissociation of Custom Symbols — The software now allows you to select multiple
item tags in Electrical Index, Tabular Editor, or Reference Data Explorer and dissociate
them from custom symbols.
 Filtering Out Cables from CBDs — It is now possible to filter out unnecessary cables from

 Two New Shipped Reports — Two new reports for the construction phase of a plant are
now shipped with the software: Cable Pulling Card and Cable Termination Card.
 Load Data Sets for Operating Cases — The All Feeder Load Summary (Enhanced)
Report and Multi-Sheet Switchboard Summary Report can now include sets of load data,
each set for a different operating case that you select. This way you can compare the
various bus loadings at different operating cases and use them as a basis for equipment
sizing.
 Load Summaries and Report Preferences — User preferences for load summaries and
other reports have been moved to the File > Preferences > Load Summaries and Reports
tab. Also note that the following settings are now dependent on user access rights:
 Calculation method for All Feeder Summary report
 Inclusion of coupled buses in All Feeder Summary report
 Account for converting equipment power losses
 Reference Cable Schedule for SmartPlant 3D Shipped Report — This new shipped
report has been introduced for the use in SmartPlant 3D to bulk load SmartPlant Electrical
reference cables into the SmartPlant 3D catalog.

New Features in SmartPlant Electrical

Reference Data
 Shipped Single-Core Cable Assemblies — The armor type of shipped single-core cable
assemblies has been changed from Steel armored to Aluminum armored. You can see
this change in the Reference Cable Common Properties dialog box for a reference single
core assembly.

Single Line Diagrams

 Optimizing the Size and Position of Selected Frames — After repositioning buses, cells,
and other items in an open drawing, and after resizing and moving frames, you can click the
Edit > Adjust Frame Position and Size command to optimize the size and position of the
selected frames according to the current position of the items in the selected frames.
 Resetting and Retaining Custom Styles and Item Positions in Regenerated SLDs —
When regenerating a manual or automatic SLD, it is now possible to do the following:
 Reset the custom styles without recalculating the all the item positions in the drawing.
 Recalculate all the item positions in the drawing without resetting the custom styles.
 Reset all the custom styles and recalculate all the item positions in the drawing.
 Setting a Scale Factor — The software allows you to set a scale factor for the entire
content of an SLD drawing apart from the title block. The software retains this scale factor
after saving the drawing in SmartPlant Electrical.
 Drawing PDB Frames — You can instruct the software to draw a frame around each bus
section or draw a single frame around all the internals of a PDB. This option is available on
the Buses tab of the Single Line Diagram Options dialog box.
 Cable and Busway Display Options — When generating a single line diagram, it is now
possible to select whether to display associated power cables and or busways separately
and not together as a single option. In other words, there are now two separate check boxes
for these options on the Miscellaneous tab of the Single Line Diagram Options dialog
box.
 Controlling the Display of Coupled Buses on Multi-Sheet SLDs — For SLDs generated
based on PDBs, it is now possible to instruct the software whether to keep the coupled
buses on the same drawing sheet or to split the display between two sheets. This way you
can balance the scaling of the graphics on all the pages of an SLD and avoid the situation
where one of the drawing sheets is too congested and another drawing sheet has a lot of
empty space.
 Showing Space Heaters Next to the Associated Plant Items — The software now shows
multiple space heaters associated with various plant items.
 Defining the Horizontal Distance Between Parallel Feeder Branches — The Horizontal
distance setting on the Related Equipment tab of the Single Diagram Options dialog box
now also allows set the horizontal distance between parallel feeder branches in a circuit.
 Defining the Vertical Distance Between Electrical Items — This option enables you to
define the vertical distance between electrical items in a generated SLD.

New Features in SmartPlant Electrical

SmartPlant Integration
 Plant Operating Cases — When working with plant operating cases, the software
publishes and retrieves load data only if the governing operating case is set as the active
operating case of the plant.
 Retrieving Electrical Equipment Items Published by SmartPlant 3D — You can now
retrieve electrical equipment items published by SmartPlant 3D. To enable this feature, you
have to activate it in the General Settings of Options Manager. Note that SmartPlant
Electrical does not perform an update task and rejects electrical equipment items whose
classification (item type) has changed and it is different from the item type in SmartPlant
Electrical.
 Publishing Space Heaters and Their Relations — When publishing documents, the
published data now includes the relationship between electrical equipment and their
associated space heaters.
 Space Heaters in the Published Data of Cable Schedule Reports — When publishing a
Cable Schedule report, the published data now shows that cables connected to space
heaters are now connected to the motors associated with those space heaters. Space
heaters are no longer indicated in the published data of Cable Schedule reports. Note that
this change affects the published data of Cable Schedule reports only.
 Background Publishing — This feature allows you to publish selected documents
immediately as a separate process, allowing you to perform other tasks in SmartPlant
Electrical at the same time. When you use this feature, an email message alerts you when
the process is complete.
 Retrieving <SameAs> Relationships from Multiple Tools — The software can now
retrieve <SameAs> relationships from multiple tools. For example, when the same motor is
retrieved from SP&ID and SP 3D, SmartPlant Electrical saves all the <SameAs> UIDs from
these tools.
 Uncorrelating Plant Items — You can now break the relationship of plant items in
SmartPlant Electrical with items in other authoring tools.
 Optimizing the Publishing Scope of Schematic Drawings — When publishing a
schematic drawing, the software now publishes not only the drawing and its main item, but
also all the plant items that are included in the published schematic drawing. Also, opening a
published drawing in the Desktop Client enables you to see the properties of the related
item.
 No Trailing Spaces in Plant Item Names — When publishing SmartPlant Electrical plant
items, all the trailing spaces in the tag names are removed automatically.
 Publishing Cable Block Diagrams — You can now publish cable block diagrams. The
scope of the published data is determined by the content of the published CBD.
 Publishing Wiring Diagrams — You can now publish wiring diagrams. The scope of the
published data is determined by the content of the published drawing. The software also
publishes the cables and equipment items associated with the cables and not the wiring
information (any of the related, such as terminal strips, jumpers, wires, or cable sets will not
show the properties of the main equipment or the cable.)
 Publishing PDB Layout Diagrams — You can now publish PDB Layout diagrams. The
scope of the published data is determined by the content of the published drawing.

 Publishing Composite Drawings — It is now possible to publish composite drawings for

all publishable drawing types.
 Ability to Set the Publishing Scope for Individual Documents — The Document
Properties dialog box now provides options for setting the publishing scope of the selected
document. For the current document, this setting overrides the setting made in Options
Manager, which applies to all the published documents in your plant.
 Ability to Customize the Mapping of "United" Lists — You can now customize your
mapping of any "united" enumerated list to a UoM enumeration to publish "united" values.
 New Out-of-the-Box Mapping for Motor Rated Power — The MotorRatedPower
enumerated list is now mapped to the Power UoM enumeration. This new mapping enables
the publishing of motor rated power values as "united" values (Power UOM).
 Publishing Item Tags Without Spaces — A new option has been added in the General
Options window of Options Manager that allows you to publish plant items without any
spaces in their item tag names.

SECTION 3

Internationalization
Supporting internationalization in a homogeneous environment is one of the enhancements
available in SmartPlant Enterprise. A homogeneous environment uses elements from only a
single locale. For example, a German customer running on a German operating system using
only German characters and German cultural conventions is a fully supported homogeneous
environment configuration.

Homogeneous Environments
When starting a new project, use extra care during installation and configuration to ensure the
proper creation and maintenance of homogeneous environments:
 All the computers (servers and clients) within an integrated SmartPlant Enterprise
implementation must have the same regional settings, and no one should change the
regional settings after the project has started.
 Do not cross the decimal locale boundary. This is the most common cause of numeric data
corruption and calculation errors. Having users with different regional settings (like with a
period versus a comma for the decimal point) causes the software to interpret values
unpredictably. For example, a pipe run with a pressure of 35.3 psi can be read by the
software as 353 psi to the user with different regional settings. A cable length defined as 39
ft 11,21 inches has been interpreted as 121718910971323 meters when published to an
XML file. These incorrect interpretations may be used in internal software calculations and
can be impossible to backtrack or correct. Do not change the decimal point character to try
to solve an issue. Doing so will only corrupt values in the database or in text files.
 Do not cross the character-set locale boundary. For example, the character set boundary
between Western (Latin-based) and Eastern Europe (Cyrillic-based), or between Eastern
Europe and Japan.
 Create Oracle databases using AL32UTF8 for the database character set and AL16UTF16
for the NLS character set.
 Never modify the NLS_LANG registry entry on an Oracle client. Doing so causes the
character data not to convert to Unicode.
 Create Microsoft SQL Server databases with locale-specific collation settings and ensure
that all databases have the same setting.

Heterogeneous Environments
In contrast, a heterogeneous environment using elements from different, or even multiple
locales, is not supported. Many customers are currently operating in unsupported
heterogeneous environments and are often not aware of that fact. Examples of heterogeneous
environments:
 Entering or viewing Japanese data on an US/English operating system
 Using German Regional Settings (where the decimal point is a comma) on a US/English
operating system

SmartPlant Electrical Release Bulletin 23

Internationalization

 Using databases with different character encodings such as CL8MSWIN1251 or JA16SJIS

 Using multiple languages in a project, especially when crossing language-group boundaries
 Using an English server with different local language clients

International / Bi-lingual Projects

International bi-lingual projects are possible; however, great care must be used when
configuring these environments. Limitations exist and must be properly understood:
 Oracle and MS SQL Server databases can reside on any language operating system, as
long as the databases have been created and configured with proper Unicode and collation
settings.
 All SQL Server databases must have the same collation setting and reflect the “master”
language. Text is stored, sorted, indexed, and presented based on the collation setting. You
must determine which language will be used primarily to generate output (P&IDs, SLDs,
reports, approval documents, and so forth.) If Russian and English text is entered, and
Russian is the target locale, the chosen collation should be based on the Cyrillic character
set.
 All Microsoft operating systems (Japanese, Russian, German, and so forth) can enter
English characters. The reverse, however, is not true in most cases.
 Keyboard-locale can be changed as long as a character-set and code-page boundary is not
crossed. For example, English, German, French, and Spanish characters can all be used in
the same project because the same Windows® code-page (1252) is used. However, Russian
characters (code-page 1251) cannot be used in a US/English environment.
 You must decide which language operating system will be the master for bi- lingual projects.
The following is an example of a Russian-based project:
Companies in the United States and the United Kingdom are working a project with a Russian
company and the deliverables (drawings, reports, and so forth) must ultimately be provided in
Russian. The companies in the U.S. and the U.K. are working the project using the "master"
Russian operating systems (possibly using virtual Russian operating systems running on
VMware Workstation). The U.S. and U.K. companies can install and use English Microsoft
Office products on the Russian operating system because Office products are globally enabled.
If a Russian interface exists for the SmartPlant Enterprise application, then Russian users can
use the Russian interface while the English-speaking users would continue to use the
US/English interface. English-speaking engineers can enter English characters.
Russian-speaking engineers can enter Russian characters.
However, because the Russian locale uses different decimal and character-set locales,
everyone (English and Russian engineers) must use the Russian decimal symbol which is a
comma. For customization purposes, databases can be modified to accommodate new
Russian-specific requirements (fields, properties, and so forth.) Using filters, display sets, and
other software features, bi-lingual projects can be further customized. Graphic data, reports, and
so forth can be created in either or both languages.
Do not change regional settings to reflect a U.S. environment in order to resolve
problems in a non-US/English homogeneous configuration. Doing this creates a heterogeneous
configuration that will cause other possibly hidden problems that cannot be corrected. Everyone
working on a project must use the same regional settings and character set throughout the life of
the project.

Internationalization

Citrix XenApp Solutions for International Projects

Using Citrix XenApp Solutions, you can define environments that isolate users from having to
interact with non-native language operating systems while improving data integrity and
minimizing opportunities for data corruption. However, users still have to enter data using
master locale conventions for the project (decimal separator and date conventions, for
example). You can create these environments using different combinations of languages, but
some limitations exist. For example, you cannot use Russian and Chinese text together in a
project. In addition, special language characters (the German ä and ß for example) cannot be
used if the master locale is outside the western Latin-based languages (the master locale is
Russian, Chinese, Japanese, or Korean for example).
