3.4 Soft-starting Electric Motors

The purpose of all starting methods is to limit high starting current.

Measurements made on rotary screw compressors (also on dry running) show that soft-starters do
not bring the desired advantages. A higher start current for a longer time is needed than with star-
delta start-up. This is because of the high breakaway and run-up torque of the compressors.
Therefore the electrical network is loaded higher.

While soft startup of a compressor motor dependant on manufacturer and settings of the soft starter a
high current flows for about 5 to 8 seconds. Because of the different torque at startup of fluid cooled
screw compressors we expect a startup current of 4.5 times of the nominal current ant and at dry
running screw compressors we expect 3.5 times of nominal current at startup.

Only advantages are the lower mechanical stress of soft-starting and no switchover peak from star to
delta.

Real soft-starting can only be achieved by SFC versions.
