Jersey Central Power & Light
(JCP&L) has partnered with
Brookdale Community College (BCC) C ourse C urriculum
to train the next generation of GENERAL COURSES:
top-quality, well-educated and English Composition I & II; Interpersonal Communications;
experienced line workers and World Civilization I; Computer Literacy; Economics; Algebraic Modeling;
and Community First-Aid and Professional CPR
substation electricians. TECHNICAL COURSES:
Computer Aided Circuit Analysis; Electrical Skills & Techniques; Electrical Circuits
JCP&L and BCC have designed
for Power Distribution I & II; Electrical Transmission and Distribution; Switchgear,
a two-year Associate of Applied Transformers and Controls; JCP&L Technology Labs; and Summer Field Internship
Science Degree with a focus
F ield E x perience
on Electric Utility Technology.
Following the second semester, you’ll be required to participate in a compensated
10-week (40 hr/week) evaluated field experience. Work assignments will begin in
May and end in August. Pre-employment screening is required.

S teps in t h e S election P rocess –


S uccess f ull y co mplete each step to a dvance to the next
S tep 1: A
 ttend Program Orientation – This is your opportunity to learn more about
the Electric Utility Technology program and decide if a career as a line
worker or substation electrician is right for you.
S tep 2: Complete an admissions application to Brookdale.
S tep 3: T
 echnical Evaluation – Prospective students will be evaluated on a
series of hands-on activities that are performed on the job.
Pre-registration is required.
S tep 4: P
 lacement Testing – Prior to registering in classes, students will take
placement testing in reading, math and writing. Students must successfully
complete all basic skills requirements before the start of the program.
S tep 5: B
 ackground Check – Prospective students must successfully pass a
background check.
S tep 6: P
 hysical Capabilities Assessment – Students will demonstrate their
strength and endurance to ensure they are physically capable of doing
this line of work.
S tep 7: D.O.T. Physical - must provide completed Medical Examiners Certificate.
S tep 8: C
 limbing Course – Learn the basics of climbing wood poles or steel
structures and qualify out of fall arrest.
S tep 9: Classes begin.
P otential E mployment
Students with the right grades, skills and attitude will have the opportunity upon
graduation to be hired by JCP&L. Right now, salaries start at $25 per hour, as
well as paid overtime.
