To Whom It May Concern,

I am pleased to express my interest in applying to a new graduate position at Banner University

Medical Center. I will be graduating this upcoming May with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing
from the University of Arizona. I strongly believe Banner UMC offers many aspects of
specialized training, educational opportunities and professional growth that would be beneficial
to my transition from a student to a registered nurse.

In my nursing education at the University of Arizona, I have completed clinical rotations in a

multitude of diverse patient settings. Throughout my rotations, I learned that I am most interested
in working with critical care patients because of the intensity and critical thinking aspect that it
entails. During my 3rd semester, I completed my critical care rotation at a Level 1 Trauma Center
for a total of 270-hours in a cardiac, neuro and medical intensive care unit. Additionally, in my
4th semester, I completed a 180-hour preceptorship in an adult medical intensive care unit. The
level of severity for this unit included trauma patients that were involved in severe motor vehicle
accidents, organ failure or were in a decompensating state. Most of the patients required arterial
and venous access, ventilation, targeted temperature management and hemodynamic stability.
The illnesses that I cared for included diabetic ketoacidosis, heart failure, chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease, acute respiratory disease and cirrhosis. I gained a variety of skills in
tracheostomy care, suctioning, blood draws, wound care, central line dressing changes, setting up
arterial lines, EKG interpretations, and IV drip management. In addition, most of my challenges
during my preceptorship was feeling competent in caring for critically unstable patients. To
advance my knowledge and gain the necessary skills, I put a lot of hard work and dedication into
the process. For example, I was caring for a patient that had bilateral pulmonary embolisms and
was hemodynamically unstable. He was taken to a catheterization procedure and coded twice. I
helped by volunteering for two rounds of compressions and ventilated the patient. This was an
experience where I was involved in a high intense setting that allowed me to gain strength and
competence in myself as a nurse.

Based on my previous experiences, I have gained knowledge and skill in working with patients
in critical condition. I believe my commitment and drive enables me to be a great team member
as a new graduate nurse at Banner UMC. Thank you for your time and I look forward to further
discussion with you.

Sincerely,
Stephanie Martinez
