ACTIVITY NO. 4
PC-TO-PC NETWORK USING ADHOC CONNECTION

ACTIVITY OBJECTIVE:
At the end of this activity, the student should be able to:
1. Able to connect two PCs using an adhoc connection and configure the PCs for file sharing
2. Discuss the effect of distance on the data transfer rate of an adhoc connection
3. Differentiate the adhoc connection and crossover connection in terms of their data transfer
rates.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT NEEDED:

PC with internet connection

2 PC with wireless adapter

LABORATORY ACTIVITIES:
1. Research on how to connect two personal computers using an adhoc connection.
2. Connect the two PCs using an adhoc connection.
Describe the steps in connecting the two PCs with an adhoc connection. Take screenshots for each
step.

STEP 1. Go to your Window Settings then click for Network & Internet

STEP 4. Click the windows icon and then find the Command Prompt application. Right click on it and
then select “Run as administrator.”

STEP 5. A black window will appear on the PC screen. Type in “netsh wlan set hostednetwork
mode=allow ssid=networkname key=password” then press enter. The ssid will be the name for your
network and the key will be the password for the network (must be atleast 8 characters). It will then show
a three-liner confirmation.

STEP 7. Type in “netsh wlan start hostednetwork” and the command prompt will tell you that the
network has been started.

STEP 8. For the second PC, repeat steps 1 to 3 in order to change sharing and access options. Again click
Save changes.

STEP 9. Then click on the icon for the network connections to show the available networks.

STEP 10. Click on the network name “BUTTLOG” and type in the password then click “Next”

STEP 11. Wait for the PC to connect to the network and when it does, both PCs on the network will
already be visible in the network.

3. Research on how to configure the PCs for file sharing.

Is the procedure for configuring the PCs for file sharing similar to that of the cross-over
connection? NO.

4. Transfer a file with a size of at least 20MB three times and then tabulate the data transfer
rate for each file transfer. (Data Transfer Rate = File size / Transfer Time)

File Transfer Data Transfer Rate

1 25.979 MB/7.4s= 3.51 MBps
2 25.979 MB/6.2s= 4.19 MBps
3 25.979 MB/6.35s= 4.09 MBps

Does the effective data transfer rate vary significantly for the three file transfers? YES.

5. Access and play a video file of one personal computer on the other personal computer.
Does the video playback normally without video lags? YES.

6. Transfer the same file with a size of at least 20MB at different distances between the two PCs
and then tabulate the effective data transfer rate for each file transfer.

File Transfer Distance Data Transfer Rate

1 1m 25.979 MB/6.27s= 6.26 MBps
2 5m 25.979 MB/16.73s= 2.34 MBps
3 10m 25.979 MB/26.48s= 0.981 MBps
4 15m 25.979 MB/72.46s= 0.359MBps
5 20m 25.979 MB/165.87s= 0.157 MBps

Does the effective data transfer rate vary significantly between the file transfers? YES.

Describe the effect of distance on the effective data transfer rate of an adhoc connection?
As the distance between the 2 PCs increases, the data transfer rate decreases.
Determine the maximum distance for the adhoc connection at which the effective data transfer rate
is at least 100Kbytes/second .
Maximum distance = __22__ meters

7. Considering an adhoc connection and a crossover connection,

(a) Which has the higher data transfer rate? Crossover Connection
(b) Which has a data transfer rate that varies significantly? Adhoc Connection
