1. (a) It is given that 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 4𝑥 3 − 4𝑥 2 − 15𝑥 + 18

(i) Show that (𝑥 + 2) is a factor of 𝑓(𝑥) (1 mark)

(ii) Hence factorize 𝑓(𝑥) completely. (3 marks)


(b) Solve the inequality (𝑥 − 1)(𝑥 − 5) > 12 (4 marks)

(c) The functions f and g are defined by

3. (a) The ends of the diameter of a circle are the points 𝐴 (−5,3) and 𝐵 (3,1). Determine
the equation of the circle. (6 marks)
(b) The position vectors of the points 𝐴 and 𝐵 relative to an origin 𝑂 are −2𝒊 + 17𝒋
and 6𝒊 + 2𝒋 respectively.

(b) The volume of a sphere of radius r is given by 𝑉 = 3 𝜋𝑟 3 and the surface area is

given by 𝑆 = 4𝜋𝑟 2 . If the volume decreases at a rate of 200 cm3 per second, at the
instant when the radius of the sphere is 10cm, find

(i) the rate of decrease of the radius of the sphere. (4 marks)

(iii) The rate of decrease of the surface area. (2 marks)


6. (a) Find ∫ √4 + 𝑥 𝑑𝑥 (2 marks)

(b) The diagram shows the graph of 𝑦 = √4 + 𝑥 , which meets the y-axis at the point
A and the line 𝑥 = 5 at the point B. Using your answer to part (i), find the area
of the region enclosed by the curve and the straight line AB. (5 marks)
(c) Calculate the volume of the solid formed when the curve 𝑦 = √4 + 𝑥 is rotated
through 3600 about the x-axis between the limits 𝑥 = 0 and 𝑥 = 5.
(3 marks)

(d) A curve passes through the point P (−1,3). The curve has a gradient of 2 at P. Given

7. (a) A particle P moves in a straight line. Starting from rest, P moves with a constant
acceleration for 30 seconds after which it moves with constant velocity, k ms-1 for
90 seconds. P then moves with constant deceleration until it comes to rest. The
magnitude of the deceleration is twice the magnitude of the initial acceleration.

(i) Use the information to complete the velocity-time graph. (3 marks)

(ii) Given that the particle travels 450 m while it is accelerating, find the value
of k. (2 marks)

(iii) Using the value of k, determine the deceleration of the particle.


(2 marks)
(iv) Determine the average speed for the entire motion of the particle.
(4 marks)

(b) A body moves in a straight line such that t seconds after passing through a fixed
point O, its displacement from O is s m. The velocity v ms-1 of the body is such that
𝑣 = 5 cos 4𝑡.

(i) Write down the velocity as it passes through O. (1 mark)


(ii) Find the value of t when the acceleration of the body is first equal to
10ms-2. (4 marks)

(iii) Find the value of s when 𝑡 = 5 (4 marks)
