Guidance Content- Unit 11

LO1 Examine appropriate research methodologies and approaches as part of the research process

Developing a research proposition: The importance of developing methodical and valid propositions
as the foundation for a research project.

Rationale – the purpose and significance for research question or hypothesis. The value of the
philosophical position of the researcher and the chosen methods. Use of Saunders's research onion
as a guide to establishing a methodological approach.

Executive Summary

As a student on the HND Business Studies Course, I am asked to assume the responsibility for
initiating and managing a business project based on a UK based organisation of your choice. The set
theme for this project is ‘globalisation’. I will be expected to undertake a detailed research activity
into the operations of the selected business to investigate the benefits of globalisation for the
organisation and describe the increasing trade that this has provided for the organisation across the
borders of goods and services. I intend to conduct my research in an ethical way. I am aiming to
conduct this research according to a principled manner and complete the research with right mind.

The intension and reason for pursuing this project

I am perusing this unit with the aim to offer me an opportunity to demonstrate the skills required for
managing and implementing a project. I will undertake independent research and investigation for
carrying out and executing a business project, which meets appropriate business aims and
objectives. The theme for the project is the key implication of globalisation for ONE business of my
choice. On successful completion of this unit, I will have the confidence to engage in decision-
making, problem solving and research activities using project management skills. You will have the
fundamental knowledge and skills to enable you to investigate and examine relevant business
concepts within a work-related context, determine appropriate outcomes, decisions or solutions and
present evidence to various stakeholders in an acceptable and understandable format.

customers requirement. By being globalise company M1Xpress can help their financial condition and
they can make their company Known globally. I have asked these questions from five current and
two previous employees of M1Xpress.

Literature review: Conceptualisation of the research problem or hypothesis. The importance of

positioning a research project in context of existing knowledge. Significance and means of providing
benchmarks by which data can be judged. Qualitative, quantitative and mixed method research: Key
theoretical frameworks for research. Advantages and limitations of qualitative and quantitative
research approaches and methods.

Primary and secondary Research

Primary research: Primary research is based on designating questionnaire about the M1Xpress
product for general public to do it, as well to design a different questionnaire for those people who
are related to the M1Xpress product. In order to state these views in the text M1Xpress is required
to compare the views with the regular users of the M1Xpress product. As well as M1Xpress also pay
visit to the different factories of its product and ask opinions from the current workers of the
M1Xpress, also M1Xpress do an inquiry about its product from the former workers of the company.
To grasp the facts about the M1Xpress product and M1Xpress go and visit some of the few top
retailers of the its product and ask for their opinions.

Secondary research: Secondary research is consisting of M1Xpress conducting their own research,
throughout the articles, blogs and leaflets related to the M1Xpress product. Also, it involves
M1Xpress watching the visual text related to the M1Xpress product along with the written text.
M1Xpress has to face many difficulties during the research as there are lots of information about the
M1Xpress product and the data is slightly different in each platform, this is the only restrain that
interfere with M1Xpress gathering the information.

The benefits of my choice of research tools

Benefits
Primary research Secondary research
 Targeted Issues are addressed.  Time and Cost effective:
 Data interpretation is better.  Extensiveness of data:
 Recency of Data.  Basis of Primary Research:
 Proprietary Issues. Collector  Provides a basis to compare the data
 Gives better control with the gathered data by different
 Become an active participant researchers
 Give direct experience  Helps to make primary data more
 Accurate data specific
 Appreciating potential  Improve problems understanding
 Well contrast  Identify the required additional
information

LO2 Conduct and analyse research relevant for a business research project
Research as a process: Research has distinct phases which support a coherent and logical argument.
This includes using secondary research to inform a primary, empirical, study. Selecting a sample: The
importance of gathering data and information (qualitative or quantitative) to support research
analysis. Selecting sample types and sizes that are relevant to the research.

Considering sampling approaches and techniques including probability and nonprobability sampling.
Ethics, reliability and validity: Research should be conducted ethically. How is this achieved and
reported? Research should also be reliable (similar results would be achieved from a similar sample)
and valid (the research measures what it aimed to measure). Analysing data: Using data collection
tools such as interviews and questionnaires. Using analytical techniques such as trend analysis,
coding or typologies.

LO3 Communicate the outcomes of a research project to identified Stakeholders

Stakeholders: Who are they? Why would they be interested in the research outcomes? What
communication method do they expect?

Communicating research outcomes: Consideration of different methods of communicating outcomes

(e.g. written word, spoken word) and the medium (e.g. report, online, presentation). The method
and medium will be influenced by the research and its intended

audience.

Convincing arguments: No matter what the method/medium, all research should be convincing and
presented logically where the assumption is that the audience has little or no knowledge of the
research process. The importance of developing evaluative conclusions.

LO4 Reflect on the application of research methodologies and concepts

Reflection for learning and practice: Difference between reflecting on performance and evaluating a
research project.

The former considers the research process; the latter considers the quality of the research
argument and use of evidence. Reflection on the merits, limitations and potential pitfalls of the
chosen methods.

The cycle of reflection: To include reflection in action and reflection on action. Considering how to
use reflection to inform future behaviour and future considerations.

Reflective writing: Avoiding generalisation and focusing on personal development and the research
journey in a critical and objective way.
