Jesus’ miracles

1. Lazarus and his two sisters, Mary and Martha, were friends of Jesus. When Lazarus fell ill, his
sisters sent a message to Jesus, "Lord, the one you love is sick." When Jesus heard the news, he
waited two more days before going to Lazarus' hometown of Bethany. Jesus knew that he would do a
great miracle for God's glory and, therefore, he was not in a hurry.

When Jesus arrived in Bethany, Lazarus had already been dead and in the tomb for four days. When
Martha discovered that Jesus was on his way, she went out to meet him. "Lord," she said, "if you had
been here, my brother would not have died."

Jesus told Martha, "Your brother will rise again." But Martha thought he was talking about the final
resurrection of the dead.

Then Jesus said these important words: "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will
live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die."

Martha then went and told Mary that Jesus wanted to see her. Jesus had not yet entered the village,
most likely to avoid stirring up the crowd and calling attention to himself. The town of Bethany was
not far from Jerusalem where the Jewish leaders were plotting against Jesus.

When Mary met Jesus she was grieving with strong emotion over her brother's death. The Jews with
her were also weeping and mourning. Deeply moved by their grief, Jesus wept with them.

Jesus then went to the tomb of Lazarus with Mary, Martha and the rest of the mourners. There he
asked them to remove the stone that covered the hillside burial place. Jesus looked up to heaven and
prayed to his Father, closing with these words: "Lazarus, come out!" When Lazarus came out of the
tomb, Jesus told the people to remove his grave clothes.

As a result of this incredible miracle, many people put their faith in Jesus.
2. When Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. So many
gathered that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to
them.

Some men came, bringing to him a paralytic, carried by four of them. Since they could not get
him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus and, after
digging through it, lowered the mat the paralyzed man was lying on. When Jesus saw their faith,
he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”

Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, “Why does this fellow
talk like that?   He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he
said to them, “Why are you thinking these things? Which is easier: to say to the paralytic, ‘Your
sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’? But that you may know that the
Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins . . . .”   He said to the paralytic, “I tell you, get
up, take your mat and go home.”

He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they
praised God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”

3. The Healing of a Demon-possessed Man

They came to the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes. When he had come out of
the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, who had his
dwelling in the tombs. Nobody could bind him any more, not even with chains, because he had been
often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him, and the fetters broken
in pieces. Nobody had the strength to tame him. Always, night and day, in the tombs and in the
mountains, he was crying out, and cutting himself with stones. When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and
bowed down to him, and crying out with a loud voice, he said, "What have I to do with you, Jesus, you
Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, don't torment me." For he said to him, "Come out of the
man, you unclean spirit!"
He asked him, "What is your name?"
He said to him, "My name is Legion, for we are many." He begged him much that he would not send
them away out of the country. Now there was on the mountainside a great herd of pigs feeding. All the
demons begged him, saying, "Send us into the pigs, that we may enter into them."
At once Jesus gave them permission. The unclean spirits came out and entered into the pigs. The herd of
about two thousand rushed down the steep bank into the sea, and they were drowned in the sea. Those
who fed them fled, and told it in the city and in the country.
The people came to see what it was that had happened. They came to Jesus, and saw him who had been
possessed by demons sitting, clothed, and in his right mind, even him who had the legion; and they were
afraid. Those who saw it declared to them how it happened to him who was possessed by demons, and
about the pigs. They began to beg him to depart from their region.
As he was entering into the boat, he who had been possessed by demons begged him that he might be
with him. He didn't allow him, but said to him, "Go to your house, to your friends, and tell them what
great things the Lord has done for you, and how he had mercy on you."
He went his way, and began to proclaim in Decapolis how Jesus had done great things for him, and
everyone marveled.

4. Sudden storms still blow down from the hills onto the lake of Galilee.

One day, Jesus asked his disciples to go with him to the other side of Lake Galilee. They all got into a fishing
boat and set off across the water to go to the other side. While they crossed the lake, Jesus lay down in the
boat and slept. As often happened in those parts, a storm suddenly started. It was so strong that the waves
were washing over the sides of the boat, filling it with water.

The disciples could see they were in serious danger. In their panic, the disciples woke Jesus, saying "Don't you
care - we are going to drown!" Jesus stood up and, speaking to the wind and the raging waters, simply told
them to be still.

Immediately the strength of the winds decreased and the waves died down until everything was calm.

Turning to the disciples, he asked them "Why were you frightened? Where is your faith?" Jesus wanted them to
trust God to keep them safe.

The disciples were afraid and amazed and wondered if they really knew Jesus at all. "Who is this" they asked
each other, "Who even tells the winds and the water what to do, and they obey him?" Only God can do things
like that!

Christians believe that Jesus has that power because he is God's son.

5. The news was spreading fast that Jesus could heal sick people; an important man called Jairus had heard about
him and wanted Him to heal his little girl, who was very sick. Jairus pushed his way through the crowd around Jesus
and knelt in front of him.

"Please come," he cried, "My little girl is very sick." Jesus followed him through the crowd of people.

Suddenly Jesus stopped and said, "Who touched me?"

Peter, one of Jesus' followers, said, "There are always people touching you in this crowd: look at them
pushing to be near you."

But Jesus said, "Somebody touched me because they needed me to heal them."

He looked around and a very frightened woman stepped slowly towards Him and went down on her knees.
"It was me," she said. "I have been ill for many years. No one has ever been able to help me. I knew you
could heal me - but I didn't dare to ask you. So I touched your clothes and I was healed. Thank you."

Jesus looked at the woman with tender eyes and said, "You have been healed because you believed in me."

While Jesus was talking to the woman, Jairus' servant arrived. Jairus knew at once that his daughter had
died. "Don't waste the Rabbi's time," said the servant, "It is too late now".

"Don't be frightened, Jairus," said Jesus. "Just believe in me still."

When they arrived at Jairus' house, everyone was crying.

"The little girl is not dead," said Jesus. "She is only sleeping." Immediately, tears turned to laughter, for
everyone knew that the girl was dead.

Jesus sent everyone away, except for Jairus and his wife and three of His followers.

They went into the room where the little girl was lying. Jesus gently took her hand and said, "Little love,
get up."

The little girl sat up straight away. Jesus said to her parents, "Get her something to eat and don't tell anyone
what has happened here today."
