Topic: “Discuss some of the challenges facing new graduates in seeking employment upon
graduating from University and outline some of the things that you can do to overcome these
challenges”.

New graduates leaving university are having a lot of adversity and are finding it much harder
to find jobs in the workforce. Graduates are leaving university with no ‘real world’
experiences, unrealistic expectations, poor interview skills, refusal to relocate, and lack of
direction. As there is already such a large working population and the hunt for jobs is
becoming harder and harder for new graduates as there are already so many people with
actual experience in looking for the same jobs. Employers are going to hire who they believe
is the most qualified and who will produce the most and best work for them. Unfortunately,
this leaves a lot of new graduates jobless. I however, have a unique experience doing
marketing work for my parents business. This allows me to gain experience while also
completing my degree. Another issue new graduates face is unrealistic expectations. A lot of
graduates think they will get their dream job straight out of university, which just isn’t the
case in most circumstances. I do have mentality that I have to work my way to the top after
university which I believe will help me. Not get discouraged if I can’t find my dream job
straight away. Poor interview skills is also costing a lot of new graduates potential jobs. I
attended a class in high school which taught me job interview etiquette, which I have used
since and has landed me two jobs in the past. These skills are something I will never forget
and will hopefully give me a competitive edge when it comes to finding a job after
University. A lot of graduates from universities all over Australia would love the city they
live in and not want to move somewhere else for a job. This refusal to relocate means that
they are limiting their chances of potential jobs drastically. A lack of direction is also another
serious issue new graduates face. They are not sure what job they want to do with their
degree which disadvantages them in the long run. If a person knew exactly what their dream
jobs is and what they had to do to accomplish this dream they are more likely to be successful
at getting it than someone who has no idea what they want to do. I know that I want to work
in the marketing field and in a job relating to social media. Preferably running the social
media accounts of a major company.
