DISCUSSION GUIDE

For the period of time when our church services

and YSG are suspended, we are encouraging all
YSGLs to do online meetings with their YSGs

For our YSG material, we’ll be following the church’s

Bible Reading Drive (BRD) - click here to see the plan

There will be devotional reflections written for

each day’s BRD passage(s). Use them for your
YSG time! Subscribe to the telegram channel
to receive updates, or click here to visit the link

Refer to our weekly discussion guide, in which

discussion questions and guidlines for your
online YSG sessions will be supplemented

BRD PASSAGE(S)
Hebrews 10:19-39

OPENING ACTIVITY
Everyone fill up a 1 litre (or whatever amount is reasonable to you
and your group) water bottle. On the count of 3, everyone will
attempt to finish the water as fast as they can. Winner gets to pray.

WARM UP
• Do you exercise? Which exercise is the most diffcult for you to do?
(Examples: planks, pull-ups, push-ups etc. If you want, you can even
get your group to do it together — like everybody do a plank and
see who manages to do hold it the longest)

• Which NAPFA exercise are you the best and worst in? Why?

• What do you struggle to persevere in, in life? (Examples: dieting,

discipline in homework, stamina, refraining from bubble tea, etc.)

2. Where is the starting line?

1. What race is this?

3. How do I run it?

7. What is the consequence of dropping out of the race?

4. Where is the finishing line?

6. What is the definition of “dropping out”?

5. What is my motivation to run this race?

DELVING DEEPER
One way to understanding this passage is to imagine you are running
a race. Refer to the illustration, and match the number in the boxes to
the points below chronologically.
Do allow your youths to discuss and share their answers. If there are
differing opinions, that’s great! Also do attempt to find the answers
from the passage directly, or if there are cross references elsewhere in
the Bible, ask them to share them. Always ask, “Where in the passage
do you see that?”
Finally, do note that some questions are harder than others, please
allocate time accordingly.
25 APRIL

1. What race is this?

(Hint: Refer to v38, 39)

Answer: Living a life of faith

2. Where is the starting line?

(Hint: Explore ‘confidence’ in v19 & v 35 + recap last week’s lesson)

Answer: When the Hebrews received this ‘confidence’ which is

when they have the faith Jesus, as our high priest who sacrificed
himself, to give us access to God.

3. How do I run it?

(Hint: Refer to the 3 ‘let us’ in v22-25)

Answer: Draw near to God unwaveringly, and not forgetting to meet

one another for the purpose of encouraging each other in the faith

4. Where is the finishing line?

(Hint: Refer to v37 & Habakkuk 2:3)

Answer: Jesus’ return. In Habakkuk, it was referring to Jesus’

first coming but also included his second coming.

The reward is to be with God!

6. What does it mean to drop out of the race?

(Hint: Refer to v26, 29, 25, 38)

v29: trample Jesus
v35: throw away your confidence — rejection of Jesus
(refer to Question 2)

POINTERS
MAIN POINT:
DO NOT LOSE STAMINA (faith in Jesus Christ)
BEFORE THE FINISHING LINE (Jesus returns)

*Answers are for leaders only. The content can be covered at varying depth or
can be covered via a different approach altogether (another approach to
understand the passage is to observe the contrast between the Christian life in
v19-25 vs warning in v26-31), but minimally, try to help everyone in group reach
the understanding of the main point from the passage before moving onto
application. The list of questions under the application section is non-exhaustive,
there are many more applications that can come out of the main point.

APPLICATION
1. What are some things that can cause me to forfeit or be tempted to
forfeit this race?

2. Do I feel isolated / know anyone who feels isolated in this Christian walk?
How does this passage show us what the Christian life should look like?

3. Do we recognise fellowship with God as a reward worthy to persevere

through this Christian life?

4. How does knowing the consequence of rejecting Jesus affect us?

5. What do you think Jesus would say to us if we were to meet tonight?

IN SUMMARY
This race that will last 80 years, if you’re lucky, a 100 years. That may
seem like forever but when we look at this life in light of eternity with
God, this race is just a 100m dash. One thing you can be sure of in this
life is that you will face persecution for your faith in many forms but God
isn’t just going to send us off at the starting line and meet us at the
finishing line. These are words from God himself, “… behold, I am with
you always, to the end of the age.” (Mt 28:20) So take heart, persevere in
the faith by turning to God daily and not forgetting to meet your
Christian friends to spurge one another on!
