1.0 Introduction
Computer has been perhaps the most outstanding innovation in the field of computer science
in the history of mankind. Technology has affected severely in the lives of approximately
more than half of the population. Computer has been integrated into the education system to
enhance learning activities. From classroom activities to space and beyond and everything in
between, computers are a vital part of daily life. Thus, everything that is done in the everyday
lives is affected by technology like the computers. Computers help dissect any kind of data.
In the world of technology, computer has enhanced the phase of work, by making it easy,
smooth and fast. According to Bill Gates, “The computer was born to solve problems that did
not exist before”. In addition, computer has changed the lives of people significantly.

A website is a collection of related web pages, including multimedia content, typically

identified with a common domain name, and published on at least one web server.
Wikipedia.org, google.com, and amazon.com are the typical examples of a website. A
website may be accessible via a public Internet Protocol network, such as the internet, or a
private local area network, by referencing a uniform resource locator that identifies the site.
Websites can have many functions and can be used in various fashions; a website can be a
personal website, a corporate website for a company, a government website, an organization
website, etc. Websites are typically dedicated to a particular topic or purpose, ranging from
entertainment and social networking to providing news and education. All publicly accessible
websites collectively constitute the World Wide Web, while private websites, such as a
company's website for its employees; are typical parts of an intranet.
Web design encompasses many different skills and disciplines in the production and
maintenance of websites. The different areas of web design include web graphic design;
interface design; authoring, including standardized code and proprietary software; user
experience design; and search engine optimization. Often many individuals will work in
teams covering different aspects of the design process, although some designers will cover
them all. The term web design is normally used to describe the design process relating to the
front-end (client side) design of a website including writing mark up. Web design partially
overlaps web engineering in the broader scope of web development. Web designers are
expected to have an awareness of usability and if their role involves creating markup then
they are also expected to be up to date with web accessibility guidelines.

Fundamentally, web designers develop the layout and the overall look of a website. They
create graphic and media essentials using Photoshop, Flash and other media applications.
They also ensure that a website is user-friendly and interactive. Some web designers use
Internet tools, social media and e-commerce in promotional campaigns for their sites.
Web designers are responsible for programming in HTML and CSS while some may
work with JavaScript. Other job duties may require elements of web developer
experience, including a working knowledge of web browsers, multiple OS platforms and
site maintenance.

Websites are created using a markup language called HTML. Web designers build
webpages using HTML tags that define the content and metadata of each page. The

1 |Pritkesh Vikash Prasad 721649

layout and appearance of the elements within a webpage are typically defined using
CSS, or cascading style sheets. Therefore, most websites include a combination of
HTML and CSS that defines how each page will appear in a browser. Hence, this project
is fundamentally based on creating a website thus; this project is compiled from the point
of view of a Web Designer. Therefore, this project has been a great learning opportunity
which has enhanced the knowledge of many students as well as to me personally about
the different roles of a Web Designer.

ROLES AND
RESPONSIBIITES OF A
WEB DESIGNER

2.0 Roles And Responsibilities Of A Web Designer

A web designer has a key responsibility for the designing, layout and the coding of a website.
Web designers ensure that the website is of a high, neat and professional quality. Web
designers are involved with the technical as well as the graphical aspects of a website where
they are typically concerned with how the website will work and how professional it will
appear to the users. Web designers can also be involved with the maintenance and upgrading
of a current website. For the purpose of this project, I will be highlighting my roles and
responsibilities of being a web designer
3 |Pritkesh Vikash Prasad 721649
. Fig 1.0 Web Designer

2.1 Roles

After commencing with the relevant audience, I will identify the type of content which I will
host and I will:

 Use my skills in software programming and graphics to create a website effectively.

 Use my creativity and imagination to design a website which looks presentable to the
target audience.
 Be adaptable and able to pick up new techniques to make the website appear different.
 Keep up to date with advances in computer technology and how this will affect the
business environment.

2.2 Responsibilities
A web designer creates the look, layout, and features of a website. The job involves
understanding both graphic design and computer programming. Once a website is created, a
designer helps with the maintenance and additions to the website. They work with
development teams or managers for keeping the site up-to-date and prioritizing needs, among
other tasks.

PHAS
Similarly, I will follow all the above responsibilities and the first four phases to make my
website look neat and professional as well as simple and sweet.

3.0 Phases Involved:
Website development is a process of creating a new website or making amendments to the
current website. There are eight steps in the development process. The flowchart below
illustrates the development process.

Testing
Hence, this project will only elaborate on the first four phases, which are planning, content,
design and construction.

3.1 Phase 1: Website Planning

As the old adage goes, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Building a website without a plan
is like constructing a house without its foundation. Things end up in the wrong place, features
are overlooked, and the situation is ripe for miscommunication between website builder and
client. Website planning is the first task required in the development of a successful website.
While planning the website I will set the scene, check the cost of development, set smart
goals and identify the user needs.

3.1.1 Setting the Scene

Designing this website was a requirement by the Ministry of Education for the Year 13
Computer Project, 2018. The website will be based on a Pizza company to advertise the types
of pizzas sold as to the impact of changes in the society. It will enable one to attract more
customers because of the availability of new and fast technology where people are connected
through using social media and obviously the internet and the World Wide Web. Some of the
factors that must be considered to drive web production are:

a) Industry and Market Trends:

This would be factor more to be a consideration as this defines the standard of the website
and associates to a standard available when comparing to other websites in the technological
society and updated website to time and other factors such as design and accessibility.

b) Technology

This aspect is concerning the new content and new design options available that could be
associated in terms of the layout style, features, and other related aspects of a website.

3.1.2 The Cost of Development

If there is development, then surely there will be costs involved either in the form of money
or precious valuable time. Hence, it is mandatory for one to prepare a budget. This will
probably include funds for web design, programming, and web hosting (though other
expenses may apply). I will also research the market by shopping around and consulting with
professionals. Hence, the cost of development for the website will be approximately $1800.

3.1.3 Setting Smart Goals

Setting SMART goals will ensure that the goals are realistic and can be achieved easily.

Specific
Measureable
Achievable
6 |Pritkesh Vikash Prasad 721649Realistic
Time

Specific, means that goals must focus on a particular area of activity and not be so broad as to
be meaningless. Measurable, it should be possible to gauge when a goal has been achieved.
Achievable, there is no point setting a goal that cannot be achieved. Realistic, a target must
be realistic. Timely, means that goals should be bound by a time frame.
(Ministry of Education, 2015)
3.1.4 User Needs
The users of the website would be the people interested in eating pizza and if it is hosted over
the internet then the users would be the interested individuals and all the information about
the business could be accessible by the public.

3.1.5 Researching User Needs

It was typically based on the taste and preference of the people where they were asked what
types of pizzas they preferred in order to adjust to the types of pizzas available.

3.2 Phase 2: Website Content

Web content is the textual, visual, or aural content that is encountered as part of the user
experience on websites. Website content includes the entire information and applications
available on the sites. It also includes text, images, sounds, videos, and animations. It is
particularly the web designer’s task to make sure that the content of the site is applicable for
all information needs.

3.2.1 Content Journey

Users of a website are on a journey especially the first time users; they usually know little or
nothing about the site. As the web designer of this website it’s my job to ensure that the
content of the site caters for all the information the users need.

3.2.2 Content Format

Moreover, there will be a variety of content formats that will be used significantly in the
content of my website.

Types of Content Format Used In the Website:

CONTENT FORMAT EXPLANATION

Plaintext Is the straightest forward of all content to be published on the web.
It can be authored in any word processor and viewed in any web
browser, either desktop or mobile.
Mash ups Are links between data on web designer’s site and some other sites
e.g. Google Maps.

7 |Pritkesh Vikash Prasad 721649

3.3 Phase 3: Website Design

Web design is the process of creating websites. It encompasses several different aspects,
including webpage layout, content production, and graphic design. Web design is technically
a subset of the broader category of web development. Websites are created using a markup
language called HTML. Web designers build webpages using HTML tags that define the
content and metadata of each page. The layout and appearance of the elements within a
webpage are typically defined using CSS, or cascading style sheets. Therefore, most websites
include a combination of HTML and CSS that defines how each page will appear in a
browser.
3.3.1 Information Architecture

Information architecture is the structural design of shared information environments; the art
and science of organizing and labeling websites, intranets, online communities and software
to support usability and find ability; and an emerging community of practice focused on
bringing principles of design and architecture to the digital landscape. Typically, it involves a
model or concept of information that is used and applied to activities which require explicit
details of complex information systems. These activities include library systems and database
development. Information architecture is considered to have been founded by Richard Saul
Wurman. The following illustrates the information architecture used in the development of
my website.

1.0 Home page

2.0 Home 3.0 Product

8 |Pritkesh Vikash Prasad 721649

3.3.2 Interaction design
Interaction design is generating actions in response to user behavior. Interaction design is
defined to navigate users to other relevant and informative sites. Some websites that are
linked are to the ministry of educations website, Google and yahoo.
3.3.3 Interface Design
Interaction design is concerned with the selection of web elements that enables interaction
with site visitors. One element which was used was hyperlinks. These hyperlinks were in
forms of mash ups and widgets about relevant websites.
3.3.4 Navigation Design
Navigation design is concerned with helping visitors in orienting oneself within a website. In
order, to achieve this aspect Global Navigation was used. Global Navigation buttons placed
on each webpage for easy accessibility to each individual page and information. Global
Navigation buttons that were used are Home and History. Through the use of the following
tags or buttons, user will be able navigate oneself to individual webpages.
3.3.5 Information Design
Information design is the practice of presenting information in a way that fosters efficient and
effective understanding of it. The term has come to be used specifically for graphic design for
displaying information effectively, rather than just attractively or for artistic expression.
Information design is closely related to the field of data visualization and is often taught as
part of graphic design courses.

3.4 Phase 4: Website Construction

Website construction refers to the creation and troubleshooting of the documents, style
sheets, scripts, and images that make up a professional site. The major activities that fall
under development are authoring, styling and programming.

3.4.1 Authoring/Markup
In the process of preparing the content for delivery on the web marking up content with html
tags was used to describe the content and its functionality.

Some Common tags found very useful were;

Tags Opening tag Closing tag Procedure of
Inserting

Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)

Cascading style sheets were not used yet styles were individually defined with its
corresponding formats and layouts.
Browser compatibility
Website traffic analytic was studied and the information was gathered on what were the
programs and browsers that were being used and the compatibility it provided on a particular
website. Therefore, the content on the website was duly considered to the specifications and
was observed to be compatible.
Screen Resolution
Screen resolutions define the number of pixels that can be displayed on a monitor screen with
the consideration of accessibility to the users of the website. The current accepted standard is
1024 pixels by 768 pixels high.

Web accessibility

Web accessibility is the protocol for all the individuals to use the website without being left
out because of disabilities. However, adding of such content becomes highly difficult and
goes out of the content as per the project is concerned.

information about your products and services to give the customers current updates of the
business.

4. Better Relationship
Better website can build better relationships with your customers. You can send messages
instantly to your customers through email. Also, your customers can review your products
online and can also leave feedback for you and your business. It’s best to always send your
customer a message. This is essential for building a good relationship  with them. You can
even give them more information about your business through messages or emails.

13 |Pritkesh Vikash Prasad 721649

5. Opportunity
A website gives you the opportunity to prove your credibility. You have to tell your
customers why you deserve their trust through your website. This can earn positive feedback
for your service and products. Also, your website serves as a place for a potential investor to
explore what your business is about and what it can do in the future.

5.0 Conclusion
Having a website is fundamentally important for any business organization for the growth
and prosperity of the business. Companies present their products on the internet through
resourceful and innovative websites created by web designers. Consumers search for products
and services online before making purchases. Allowing your website to be found on the
Internet will give your business an advantage over your competition. Customers educate
themselves about your business and get answers to many of their questions. A well-educated
customer will pre-qualify themselves and be ready to make buying decisions when they
contact your company.

A website is a significant collection of related web pages, including multimedia content,

typically identified with a common domain name, and published on at least one web server.
Typical examples include wikipedia.org, google.com, and amazon.com. A website may be
accessible via a public Internet Protocol network, such as the internet, or a private local area
network, by referencing a uniform resource locator that identifies the site. In addition,
websites are typically dedicated to a particular topic or purpose, ranging from entertainment
and social networking to providing news and education.

Web design encompasses many different skills and disciplines in the production and
maintenance of websites. It helps people familiarize themselves and engage in active
participation to enhance the ability of the website to a greater extent. It makes work faster and
easier to help people gain significant knowledge about the website. A website has got many
significant advantages but is also overweighed with disadvantages.

The advantages of having a website are countless when compared to the disadvantages. The
advantage of having a website is, all resources of an individual/company or school are all
available at one convenient place. This aspect has become more considerable in today’s
world mostly among the young adults. The disadvantage is Cyber Crime since anyone can
use the internet and hack others website for malicious purposes.

The roles and responsibilities of a web designer are significant in many ways. The phases
helped in a fundamental way to organize the website and make it appear professionally.
Hence, this project has been extremely important and has helped enhance my knowledge on
web designing and has given a foresight of what to expect if one wants to pursue a career in
such. This project has highly been a factor of basic research and knowledge development
14 |Pritkesh Vikash Prasad 721649
through the knowledge from Year 12 and Year 13 level. Thus, it allowed for the identifying
of the benefits of having a website for a business.

6.0 Recommendations
It is mandatory for any Business or individual to keep updated with the standards in today’s
technological society. The website has become one of the essential tools in any
individual/company or school. Data networking is a telecommunication that allows
