PREFACE
“You won’t get your job done, unless you get your hands dirty.”
- Marc Reyes

This quote sums up what I have experienced after being exposed to

the work environment of mechanics, mechanical engineers, and technical
support group of the company I was assigned in for two weeks. They always
told us to look at them, on how dirty they got as they work and let us think if
we still aspire to be a Mechanical Engineer in the future. Well, for me that is a
kind of a real motivation and inspiration for me to do my best in everything
that I do in order to attain my goals in the future.

This documentary report presents my experiences and learnings

throughout the work immersion program.

IMPORTANT POINTS IN WORK IMMERSION

Introduction
Work immersion is a key feature in the Senior High School curriculum
and refers to the part of that consists of 80 hours of hands-on experience or
work simulation which Grade 12 students will undergo to expose them to the
actual work setting or work environment of their desired profession and to
enrich the competencies provided by the school; as stipulated under DepEd
Order No. 30, s. 2017. The immersion trains students and strengthen their
skill or expertise for their work in the future. According to DO 40, S. 2015, it
is part of the K-12 program which prepares students to work in companies.

Through this program, the students are expected to be ready for their
big step in working and be comfortable and familiar with mechanical-related
conditions in line with their specialization. Students experience the social
interaction in work environment that would help them as they graduate and
face real life. Work immersion is useful as it enables Senior High students to
decide if what they have chosen in school is what they want to have as a
career. Being able to test their skills and knowledge in practice will help them
develop their career choice.

I am expecting that this program will help me enhance my knowledge,

and skills of my desired course in college. By immersing ourselves to our
dream jobs and workplaces, I also expect to be enlightened on what I really
want to pursue in the near future.

Objectives of the Work Immersion

One of the goals of the K to 12 Basic Education Program is to develop
in learners the competencies, work ethic, and values relevant to pursuing
further education and/or joining the world of work. To achieve greater
congruence between basic education and the nation’s development targets,

RSHSIIIRSHSIIIRSHSIIIRSHSIIIRSHSIIIRSHSIIIRSHSIIIRSHSIIIRSHSIIIRSHSIIIRSHSIIIRSHSIIIRSHSIIIRSHSIIIRSHSIIIRSHSIIIRSHSIIIRSHSIIIRSHSIIIRSHSIIIRSHSIII

Work Immersion, a required subject, has been incorporated into

the curriculum. This subject will provide learners with opportunities:
1. to become familiar with the work place;
2. for employment simulation; and
3. to apply their competencies in areas of specialization/applied
subjects inauthentic work environments.
To achieve the above objectives, Work Immersion is thus
a requirement for graduation from secondary education. Learners are
immersed in actual work environments such as workshops offices and
laboratories in which their prior training is relevant. Other possible venues for
work immersion are listed in Annex B.
These guidelines were formulated based on the rich experiences of
modeling schools, tech-voc schools, partnership focal persons, industry
partners, and youth development advocated. These guidelines can provide
process support to field offices of the Department of Education (DepEd) in
fostering relationships and strengthening partnerships so that learners will
have to access to suitable work immersion venues and other related
resources.

Values and Attributes of a Student in a Work Immersion

A strong work ethic means learning the most efficient way to complete
tasks and finding ways to save time while completing daily assignments.
A self-confident person is someone who inspires others. He is not afraid
to ask questions on topics where they feel they need more knowledge.
Professionalism. Professional behavior includes learning every aspect of
a job and doing it to the best of one’s ability
Self-motivated. Once a self-motivated person understands his
responsibility on the job, they will do it without any prodding from others.
Honesty and integrity. It is the responsibility of each person to use
their own individual sense of moral and ethical behavior when working
with and serving others within the scope of their job.

THE WORK EXPERIENCE ACTIVITY REPORT AND REFLECTION

Everyday Journal
January 11, 2019/ Friday
We went to the SBMA Labor Department Office to process our papers
such as our ID, endorsement letters, application letters and other documents.
After waiting, we are oriented about the work ethics inside SBMA, the do’s
and don’ts, and the rules and regulation of the company. After that, we went
to the SBMA Office for the last step to claim our ID pass.
January 14, 2019/ Monday
Today was the first day of our work immersion program. We had an
orientation about the profile of company, safety regulations and the Plant
Manager Jerry G. Caseja was introduced. After those, Sir James Pena toured
us on the site and acquaint us to some of the personnel.

On this day, the different supervisors of each department were

introduced and we’re assigned according to our desired professions. We had a
tour again, but this time together with our supervisor Engr. Daniel R. Basa
whom I call Sir Danny. Some parts of the system we’re introduced and
discussed.
January 16, 2019/ Wednesday
First thing in the morning, we had a toolbox meeting which they do
every day in order to report what the night shift personnel have done to
turnover to the morning shift personnel. Everyone in Mechanical Department/
Technical Support Group introduce their selves, as well as, us Immersion
participants. After those, while the engine is running I observed as they
change the Safety Filter for the Engine.
January 17, 2019/ Thursday
We started our day with a toolbox meeting. This day was the very first
where we’re hands-on because we were taught to calibrate a Fuel Injector. It
was shown to us when the fuel injector was not functioning properly,
spraying a strong jet stream of diesel instead of a mist and in that case we
have to change the nuzzle component of it. We disassembled the Fuel
injector, then each part were taught to us by Senior Specialist; Mechanical
Rommel Sucgang whom I call Sir Momoy and let us calibrate from his
guidance and a manual.

conflict between the Operations and Mechanical Department. All I did was
just observed them.
January 22, 2019/ Tuesday
Today, we checked the hydrant and the water pump, the supervisor
explained the concept and how does the water pump works. It was shown to
us that they have Engine-driven and motor-driven in case of emergency
where the other one is not functioning.

Observation and Insights

The immersion area being a diesel power plant is well-organized, they
procure the “safety first” especially to the employees – by being prepared in
emergency cases like fire, having evacuation area, having two power sources
of the hydrants; engine-driven and motor driven, having proper waste
disposal/segregation among solid and liquid wastes, and assuring the
maintenance of the power plant. The people there, they respect each other
whether you’re a boss or a head of department or just a crew or employee.
They accommodate us well, because they let us stay on their conference
room. They also have kitchen in electrical and mechanical department.
On the program itself, their work is very crucial and delicate that is
why most of the times we’re just observing. I did not have much background
on Mechanical engineering because I am just a Senior High school student
unlike the college ones or OJTs but I know in myself that I have learned
something in there and I understand some of their machines and how they
function. Moreover, the two weeks or 80 hours of work immersion program
was too short for us to absorb and be familiar with what they do, but on the
bright side I experienced their work environment and it help me reflect if I
really want to pursue my career in this profession.
I can say that it is not easy to work at a manufacturing industry. Harm
and risk are not very much unavoidable and you have to work in confidence

Overall Reflection and Self-Appraisal

They say that experience is the best teacher and this work immersion
program is one of my best experiences in life. Even though I only got to
attend 8 days of the program I still learned a lot on my desired profession in
the future. The Immersion program served as a lesson and a really nice
experience to me.
Through the work immersion program, it made me realized and reflect
on what I really like in the future because somehow, I also like to be a Civil
Engineer in the future. I am a car enthusiast and I am somewhat familiar with
car parts, engine and what is under the hood; and having a program like that
on a Diesel Power Plant is learning and understanding it in a museum of big
components of engine.
More so, I was very fortunate to have work immersion at a prestige
and large company which was owned by Ayala Corporation because other
schools don’t get a chance to conduct that program.
After a few weeks of immersion, I have realized few things that will
really be useful for my future. First, punctuality is very essential because in
this simple way, you can how serious you are to your job, next would be
patience. Patience when it comes to the tasks that they’re going to give you,
as well as the times that you’re just waiting for the next task that will be

given to you, even if you already got bored waiting for nothing. And lastly,
always poses a positive attitude. Because positivity is next to tranquility.

Work Immersion Highlights

It was my first time to be on a power plant and had hours working
with the employees there, having work immersion in OSPGC is such a great
experience and I consider this to be one of the highlights throughout the
program. I am mesmerized with the machines, equipment, and engines in big
sizes.
The things I learned in Oral Communication, helped me to socialize
and communicate with the employees in the Mechanical Department. Every
morning in our toolbox meeting we always communicate with the Mechanical
Department Superintendent Mr. Daniel R. Basa and with Senior Specialist
Rommel Sucgang during times of discussion. On the other hand, the things I
learned in Chemistry and in Physics help me understood the mechanics or of
how the system and the machines their work.
Lastly, when one of the engineers had a conversation with us about
the different fields of engineering and how he became a successful engineer.
I found this really helpful and inspiring to continue to study hard in college.
