Two zero error free Vernier Callipers A and B have their main scale
divisions equal to 1 mm each. In A 11 equal divisions of Vernier scale
correspond to 10 main scale divisions and in B 9 Vernier scale divisions
correspond to 10 main scale divisions. Due to some manufacturing
defect one of the markings (not the extreme ones) on the Vernier scale
B is shifted from its actual position by 0.05 mm. The readings of A and
B respectively are shown in the figures. Then the possible reading(s) (in
cm) are respectively

a. (4.25, 4.26) b. (4.25, 4.31) c. (4.25, 4.21) d. (4.35, 4.26)

Two coherent point sources having wavelength λ = 500 nm are kept at

(d/2,0) and (-d/2,0). The interference pattern due to these point sources
is observed on a screen represented by the plane x = D. Now both the
sources begin to execute out of phase SHM along the X-axis with
amplitudes d/4 each. Due to this the diameter of the 10th order bright
circle begins to vary between p m and q m. Then find the integer closest
to 0.01 |q - p|. (D = 1 m, d = 0.25 mm)

A symmetric top rotating about its symmetric

axis appears to defy gravity. If the top lands
in a slant manner then the motion of the
centre of mass is circular along the vertical
axis passing through the point of contact. This
motion of the top is called precession. The
torque of gravity is responsible for changing
the angular momentum in a continuous
manner.
∆Ltotal = τgravity = (r x mg)
The top shown in the figure is a solid sphere of mass M and radius R
having a nail passing through it. The nail’s mass can be considered to
be negligible and it extends upto a length R below the sphere. The top
was rotated with a constant angular velocity (anticlockwise as seen
from the top) ω by suddenly pulling the rope of length L tied along the
wooden top and the angle made by the axis of the top with the vertical

is α. Answer the following questions.

M = 0.5 Kg; R = L = 0.5 m; α = sin-1(0.6); ω = 30 rad/s; g = 10 m/s2
The angular momentum in the above case has two components one of
which remains constant Lc and the other varies that is denoted by Lv.
Considering both the components to be in SI units the value of Lc/Lv is
a. 23/15 b. 6/25 c. 26/15 d. 32/25
The precession angular velocity of the top is ωz rad/sec and the
minimum coefficient of friction needed between the needle and the
ground for precession to happen is μo. Then (μo, ωz) is
a. (0, 2) b. (0.12, 4) c. (0.24, 4) d. (0.24, 2)
A light inextensible rope of length L wound over the top has been pulled
by a constant force F to make the top rotate. The value of F is
a. 45 N b. 45.3 N c. 45.7 N d. 46.4 N

Two thin wires AB and CD, of lengths 2 m and 1

m respectively at 10oC, thermal conductivities in
the ratio of 4:1, have their ends B and C soldered
together. End D has now been maintained at
400oC and A is still at 10oC. At steady state the
fractional change in length due to thermal expansion has been plotted
against the length as shown. If the coefficient of thermal expansion of
rod AB is 6 x 10-6 K-1, then the same value at a distance of 2.25 m from
B is N x 10-6 K-1. Find the value of N.
