Hello, this is Reece Milligan and this is my podcast assignment for ED245
0:07
For this assignment, I interviewed my mother, Liz Milligan, who has been a teacher within the
Greater Jasper School Corporation for about 10 years now.
0:13
Unfortunately, this is kind of my last resort. The audio files would not work and there's no way to
fix them so I'm just going to tell you her answers from my voice.
0:22
So, first I asked her what was the biggest technological innovation introduced to education 10
years ago.
0:34
And she pretty much went into detail about how iPads were used, how it was the new thing, how
they were just invented. And this allowed students to... allowed teachers to purchase them
through grants so students could use them for math skills, reading skills, any kind of skills you
could use in schools.
0:41
Next, I asked her you know how much was technology actually used 10 years ago.
0:58
And she actually said it was used quite a bit. It's kind of like what we do now. We use them for
typing up essays, printing them off, all that kind of stuff. Obviously, I talked about the iPads and
the apps and all the stuff they can do with that.
1:06
And I thought that was kind of interesting because I didn't really know that they used technology
as much 10 years ago.
1:22
You know in the kind of technological realm we're in now you wouldn't really expect that 10
years ago as well but it seems like that was the case.
1:26
And then finally I asked her... I asked her a very very interesting question.
1:37
And I asked her if technology is actually better used now than it was 10 years ago or is it more
of a distraction.
1:45
And she actually thought it's better used now because look how much we've grown 10 years
ago. We have all these different gadgets and machines that we can use.
1:52
I know in our PATINS presentation with the lady in our ED112 class she brought in all of these
diffferent gadgets that they use with their students.
2:06
And I feel like without that kind of that stuff which was what was happening 10 years ago that it
would be harder for students overall to connect with teachers.
2:18
You look at a kid who has problems taking notes in class. There is a gadget that you can
actually use a pen and write down notes and you can go back, put the pen on what you wrote
down, and it will read the notes off to you.
2:29
So I feel like... I feel like personally technology is better used now and I feel like my mom
definitely feel the same way. And that's coming from an educators perspective.
2:43
So now in my second part of my podcast I kind of want to go into more of detail.
2:55
I actually wanted to know what technology they had 10 years other than the iPad.
3:01
So you look at the iPad obviously. I actually found an article online that says there was about
12-14% increase of online learning during this time period which is around 2010.
3:08
And I really feel like this is where educational technology took off because this is where tablets
and computers came into play
3:23
It kind of like one of those things where you have it you take advantage of it and you make use
of it in any useful way that you can
3:30
Like education obviously. You know if you have the technology to help kids learn in a more way
they can understand.
3:35
And you look at 2019 we have all these different kinds of apps.
3:44
I know for my digital I have an app called MyHomework. And it's literally just an online planner
that I use for my homework and it's just stuff like that that has made education just so much
easier for myself because I understand technology, for any other student.
3:49
And then you look at these other things like canvas and blackboard that are online too. I dont
know if they had those 10 years ago. I highly doubt it.
4:05
Still you look at these things you're able in situations like this even. With the coronavirus you're
able to get your work from home, you're able to work on it.
4:17
That's probably something they didn't have as common 10 years ago.
4:26
You know as you boil down to it 2010 was definitely a turning point but 2019-2020 it's just been
building ever since.
4:34
You know I want to apologize for my circumstances not being able to upload my audio files from
my mom directly.
4:43
If you would like those files I can actually email them to you in a way that I get full points but
thank you for listening to this and I hope you enjoyed. Thank you!
