A way to identify machines on a network.

TYPES OF IP ADDRESS

Static IP address

1. Manually input by network administrator


2. manageable for small networks
3. requires careful checks to avoid
duplication

Dynamic IP address

1. Assigned by server when host boots


2. Derived automatically from a range of
addresses
3. Duration of lease negotiated, then address
released back to server

Examples: BOOTP, DHCP
