With the advent of molecular marker
technology, genetic maps were constructed,
genes were located (both major genes and minor
genes), cloning the genes based on map position
(based on the marker-phenotype association)
became possible and several other avenues such
as candidate gene mapping, QTL cloning and
marker aided selection (MAS) started getting
familiar with most of the scientists associated
with crop improvement. The molecular marker
technology opened up a route to look at
genotype, however feeble it may be, and led to
assume that the gene isolation is very simple
from the technique point of view, the perception
becoming stronger with more and more of
genome sequencing projects. The development
of sophisticated technologies simplified the
process of understanding the order of alphabets
(A, T, G and C) of DNA and a new field of
science, “genomics” emerged. This, in its wake,
generated a number of like fields, as,
transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics and
phenomics. This led to a situation that genomics
would be a simple and handy tool to achieve
crop improvement in contrast to long and sure
methods of time-tested concepts in practical
plant breeding.
