Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title:

Math Problems in Real Life

Objectives:

Students will be able to use multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction to solve real-world

math problems.

Students will be able to solve basic algebraic equations.

Students will be able to solve multi step problems using multiplication, division, addition, and

subtraction.

State Standards:

4.ATO.2 Solve real-world problems using multiplication (product unknown) and division (group

size unknown, number of groups unknown).

4.ATO.3 Solve multi-step, real-world problems using the four operations. Represent the problem

using an equation with a variable as the unknown quantity.

Context:

This lesson is important because it is necessary for students to see that these are skills that they

actually can and will use in their day to day life. Often students may not care or try as hard if

they do not see the reasoning behind it. It also forces students to recall on their previous

knowledge about multiplication, division, addition, subtraction, and soling algebraic equations.

Students have been learning about these four operations for a while, so implementing this next

step is critical for their continued development. After this lesson students will be able to use

math in their everyday lives to solve algebraic problems with multiple steps. Overall, this lesson
will ensure that they are sufficient in their multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction

facts, and can solve algebraic problems.

Data:

Students will be grouped based on their last test involving algebraic problems. There will be

three groups, a high, low and medium group. Students who did well on this test should be able to

excel in turning the word problems into the algebraic sentences that will be needed to solve

them. The students on the low end of the test will likely nee some extra help grasping the

concept, so I will focus on helping them tie up any loose ends they have on that topic and help

transition them into the next one. Data will be taken from this lesson by having a Kahoot at the

end of class that will allow me to see how students did, what they have down, and what we need

to touch on the next day.

Procedures:

Introduction (15 minutes):

At the start of every class I write down the materials the students will need for the day on the

board, today I will tell them to take out their math binders and pencils. I will start the lesson by

telling the students I have a problem. I will tell them that I am throwing a birthday party and that

I have 27 candy bars, and that I want everyone to get an equal amount of candy bars. I will then

tell them that there will be 9 people at the party. I will ask them for help figuring out how many

candy bars they each get. Once a student tells me the answer, I will explain to them that this is an

example of how math can be used every day and that today we will be working on solving word

problems like this one. I will then write “PEMDAS” on the board and have them help me

remember what each of the letters stand for. I will then show them the PEMDAS YouTube

video. After the video, I will write 2 problems on the board as a warmup. The problems will be:

33-9+40+25-(30+15) = answer: 44

3+21 x 6-(24-4) x 2 = answer:89

I will then display on the board what groups the students are in, what station they all will be

starting at, and what they need with them at each station (students names and starting point

would be listed below). (Materials. For each station listed above).

Teacher Directed (15 minutes):

At this station, I want to ensure that all students have what they need to be successful as they

continue the class period. We will meet in the back of the classroom sitting on a rug on the floor,

and I will have an easel/whiteboard. I will have the lower level students here first so that they are

able to be successful at the other stations by themselves. With these students I will walk through
a problem with them calling on a new student to explain each step (use (62 ÷ 2 - 3) x 3 +6 x 2).

After this problem, read them this word problem:

The library is being relocated. The librarians are busy organizing the books. Three boxes filled

with fiction books and two boxes filled with reference books were just delivered. If each box is

filled with 120 books, how many fiction books are there? Answer=360

I will walk through this problem with the students so that they can first see an example, and then

read more aloud to them. Students will show their work on their whiteboards, and then flip them

over when they are done. Once everyone is done, they will hold up their boards. I will call on a

student who showed their work well to explain their steps. We will continue this for the 15

minutes. Answering any questions along the way. These are the word problems the students will

do:

A play center has an indoor playground and 4 party rooms. Children can go in to play or have
their birthday party there.
1. The center is open for 11 hours each day. Each party takes 3 hours. What is the maximum
number of parties the center can host in a day? 12 parties
2. If the center hosts the maximum number of parties, how much time is left to clean each party
room between parties? 2 hours
3. There is a limit of 85 children in the indoor playground. If there are 47children playing in the
playground, how many more children can the staff let in? 38 children
4. The party host can bring 20 children to the indoor playground. If there are two parties in the
play center, how many more children can the staff let in? 45 children
5. The party room costs $48 to rent. If there are more than 20 children, the center will charge
each extra guest $3. How much will a party of 28 children cost? $72
6. Write an equation using “x” and then solve the equation. The play center charges each child

$6 of admission. If there are x children, the play center receives $402 for admission. 67 children

A bakery specializing in donuts and croissants opens at 10 o’clock in the morning.

1. The bakery baked 160 donuts and 180 croissants before the shop is opened. How many baked
goods were there in total? 340
2. There are 8 different flavours of donuts and there are same numbers of donuts for each
flavour. How many donuts are there for each flavour? 20
3. The first customer came in and bought 2 dozen donuts and 6 croissants. How many croissants
were left? 174
4. The next 3 customers came in and bought 9 donuts each, how many donuts were left? 109
5. The original price of each donuts is $2. After 5 o’clock in the afternoon, the price will be
changed to $5 for 3 donuts. What is the price difference between buying 21 donuts before and
after 5 o’clock? $7
6. Write an equation using “x” and then solve the equation. The bakery charged $x for each
croissant. After all the croissants are sold out, the bakery received $540 for the croissants. $3

I will have students put away their whiteboards and markers, then tell students to pack up their
things and get what they need for the next station.

Collaborative (15 minutes):

Students will get their iPad’s out of the technology shelf on the side of the room. Students will

login into their google classroom account, and they will find a google doc with their directions

for the station. They will see that they first need to choose a partner. After getting into

partnerships, students will see that their task is to create five word problems and include the

answers. Students will post their word problems on the discussions forum on google classroom. I

will also write in the google doc that once students submit their word problems, they can work

on ones that other students did. For every 2 problems they solve correctly, they will get 3 points.

(In my classroom I plan to have a points system so that students can get different prizes once

they accumulate enough). Students will also see on the doc that if they aren’t working hard and

don’t finish creating 5 problems with their partners, then they will get points taken away from

them. This holds students accountable to get a good amount of work done and be productive.

Independent Digital (15 minutes):

During this portion, students will use their iPad’s again, but this time they will go onto the Khan

Academy app/website and login to their account. They will see that I assigned them a task called

“Multiplication and Division Word Problems”. There are three videos, ad three areas to practice.

Students are expected to work on this for the entire time. If students do not finish the whole

thing, that is okay. I will monitor their progress to see if they made good use of their time. This

allows students to work at their pace and can have any questions answered by watching the

videos or the step by step help when practicing.

Closure (15 minutes):

I will announce that it is time to head back to their desks and tell students to bring their iPads to

their desk and put everything else away. I will tell students to get onto Kahoot, and enter the

game code that I will have written on the board. Kahoot will be a review for the day that will

allow students to get more practice and will allow me to gauge where the students are at and

what they may need a little more help or practice on. The top 3 students will get points. After the

game I will ask a few students to volunteer to share the word problems they made at the

collaborative station. After this I will have students put away their iPads and tell them that their

homework is posted on google classroom.

Rationale:
PEMDAS Video:
The PEMDAS video is a song that refreshes students on what PEMDAS is and how it
works. PEMDAS is essential for the lesson that day because they must know how it
works to be successful in class. It is a free video and it is good quality. The song is catchy
and makes it fun for the kids to watch while being informative at the same time. The
closed captions can be turned on for students who are hearing-impaired.

Google Classroom:
Google classroom is a great tool to use because it keeps everything in one place for
students, helps them stay organized and know what is due when. Using the discussion
feature is great because it allows me to monitor what the students are doing and ensure
they are only doing what they are expected to do, and it allows students to work together.
Google classroom is free, and the students are familiar with it because of the frequency
that we use it. This is easily accessible for all students to use.
Khan Academy:
Kahn academy is a very reputable website/app that thousands of teachers and students
use. They follow guidelines to ensure that content area is correct for every grade level
and subject. They provide video lessons, practice after the lessons, quizzes and tests that
students can take. It allows teachers to monitor students’ progress and achievements. The
site is very accessible and is easy for all students to use. Closed captions can be turned on
for the videos or students who are hearing-impaired.

Kahoot:
Kahoot is a commonly used game for all ages. It is a tool that can be used to informally
assess students and gauge where they are with that content. It is fun for students making
them want to keep playing. It is competitive which motivates students to do well and
hopefully end up on the leaderboard. Kahoot allows you to make your own quiz, or
search through ones that other people have made and play those. It also allows you to
save the results so you can see how everyone did. Kahoot is accessible for all students to
use, is very user-friendly and is free making it a great tool for teachers.
