Standard #5: Written Competency Reflection

I have been in the early childhood program for five years and learned so much from all the
classes I have taken. I have learned about how to introduce literacy into the classroom. I learned how
the different Arts can help with development. I have learned how to incorporate Math, Science, and
Social Studies into everyday learning. All these skills that were taught to me helped me become a better
teacher.

Introducing literacy in the classroom is crucial for early childhood. A way to introduce literacy in
the classroom is by having a print rich environment. When creating a print rich environment, it helps to
have labels around the classroom. When creating labels in the classroom I would keep in mind that I
might have children with different primary languages. For example, if I were to label the door, I would
also put the Spanish word door underneath the English word. Another way I would introduce literacy in
the classroom is by putting out books for children to look through. I would make sure the books were
developmentally appropriate and appropriate to the theme in the classroom. Along with the
appropriate books I would be able to create a dramatic play center base of the topic.

Art comes in many different forms and all of which can help with development. Some of the
forms that art comes in Music, movement, painting and crafts. Music can help with social development
because it involves the children working with each other. Music can also help with fine motor skills while
using different instruments. Music can also incorporate movement, and this helps develop gross motor
skills. Developing gross motor helps the children gain strength and confidence in their body. Dancing is a
great way to help improve balance and a great form of exercise. Painting and crafts help promote fine
motor skills. The way a child holds a paint brush helps with the pincer grip getting them ready for
holding a pencil. By using crafts and painting it will help build the muscles in their hands, fingers, and
thumbs which is important for feeding themselves and be able to dress themselves.

Math, Science, and Social Studies can be used in every day in the classroom. A great way that I
can bring math and science in the classroom is cooking with the children. By having them help me put
the ingredients in they are learning math measurements and then seeing the chemical reaction that
happens when cooking. To bring social studies into the classroom I would have the parents come into
the classroom and talk with the children about their culture or their job. This not only bring social
studies into the classroom, but it also allows me to create a relationship with the parents and the
community.

There is some much information that I have learned through my five year at NOVA. I learned
how to appropriately bring literacy in the classroom. I was taught that the arts can help a child gross and
fine motor development. I learned that Math, Science and Social Studies can be found in everyday life.
Using this skill helps me become a better teacher and allows me to help my students grow.
