1.(2) 100 gallons of water is heated from 100°F to saturated vapor at 212°F. How much energy
did that take?

2.(2) What are mixing rules and why are they important

3.(2) Does the Enthalpy change more, the same, or less than the Internal Energy on
vaporization? Why?

4.(2) Consider a binary immiscible liquid mixture. The boiling point temperature for the
mixture will be greater than, in between, or less than the boiling points of the
components? Why?

5.(2) Can the dew point of a mixture and the bubble point of a mixture (at a composition where
multiple components are present) ever be the same? Why or why not?

6.(4) Sketch a constant Pressure vapor-liquid equilibrium plot for components #1 (more
volatile) and component #2 (less volatile). Identify and label on the sketch the:
• Ordinate - what you are plotting
• Abscissa - what you are plotting
• Liquid region
• Vapor region
• Two phase region
• Boiling point of pure #1
• Boiling point of pure #2
• Bubble point curve
• Dew point curve
• The vapor in equilibrium with a liquid composed of 30% component #1

7.(4) Consider the water heat distribution system shown below where:
i) The fractions refer to the fraction of the stream flowing, e.g. 20% of the stream leaving
the 100,000 Btu/hr heater goes to the exit.
ii) + Q is a heater, energy being added to the water stream

Water
1000 lb/hr
T = 50ºF 0.2
100,000 Btu/hr

0.8

– 80,000 Btu/hr

75,000 Btu/hr

0.7

0.3

50,000 Btu/hr

a) What is the outlet temperature?

b) What is the temperature of stream #1

8.(4) When doing an adiabatic flash calculation for a continuous flow process where a liquid
at high pressure is “flashed” to lower pressure to produce a mixture of gas and liquid you
know:
Inlet: Temperature (T1), Pressure (P1), molar flowrate (F) and
mole fractions (zi).
Outlet: Pressure (P2)
For this adiabatic flash:

a) Draw a picture and clearly label the unknown variables

b) Write down the equations (in terms of the above variables) that you would have to
solve in order to determine the outlet conditions. Write the equations and list any
assumptions you have to make. (do not try and solve the equations)

9.(4) Compound A and a wax form an ideal liquid solution. The wax is non-volatile (vapor
pressure = 0).
Date for compound A:
Mol Wt = 86
Normal b.p. = 341.9 (K)
∇𝐻vap at normal b.p. = 28.85 kJ/gmole
∇𝐻f = –198.9 kJ/gmole
Cp = 31.412 + 0.9760 x 10 -2 T(J/gmole ºC with T in ºC (for liquid)
TC = 507.9 K
PC = 29.9 atm

a) At 341.9 K what pressure would a solution that contains 90 mole % compound A

and 10 mole % wax boil at?

b) What is the normal boiling point of the solution defined in (a)?
